you shouldnt need a gateway if your just connecting two computers with no router and no internet access, just manually configure both computers with two ip's in the same subnet with the same subnet mask

example

computer 1: ip adress: 192.168.0.1
subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
default gateway: none

compuert 2: ip address 192.168.0.2
subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
default gateway: none

restart both machines , then try pinging each other, it should work.
