People must be pretty fed up of this topic because there are numerous posts, but I have been through about 5 or 6, repeated the steps and have been unsuccessful in stopping the annoying message I get from my Norton Antivirus software.

I have added my Hijack this log below, and am hoping that someone can give me a step by step cure for this.

I have downloaded smitrem, adaware, ewido and others, but assume that I have something in my registry that I need to get rid of first.

Hello PP and welcome to GeeksToGo

You have a file on your PC that would be missed by most scanners. I want you to do some detective work on it so that I can decide if it is RapidBlaster or not. It is very good at making itself look legitimate. Before we do that, please do this small fix with HJT.

Rescan with HijackThis. Close all programmes leaving only HijackThis running. Place a checkmark or tick against the following:

O2 - BHO: AcroIEHlprObj Class - {06849E9F-C8D7-4D59-B87D-784B7D6BE0B3} - C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 7.0\ActiveX\AcroIEHelper.dll (file missing)
O9 - Extra button: Ladbrokes Poker - {C2A80015-C447-4dc4-82DD-AED83D6ED57E} - C:\Program Files\ladbrokesMPP\MPPoker.exe

Now can you use Windows Explorer to navigate to this file:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\Icon.exe

click VIEW>DETAILS and reply with the size and date. If you right click on the file and choose PROPERTIES>VERSION and have a look at it. Does it look genuine?

Finally please visit Kaspersky for a file scan. Click on File Scan>Browse, navigate to and submit the file above for checking. Let me know the result.

Michael

That last HJT log is clean.

Can I please see the message you are getting?

Please download and run Silent Runners

* Please right click this link and choose save (link) as to download:Silent Runners.
* Save it to the desktop.
* Run Silent Runner's by doubleclicking the "Silent Runners" icon on your desktop.
* You will see a text file appear on the desktop - it's not done yet, just let it run (it won't appear to be doing anything!)
* Once you receive the prompt "All Done!", double-click on the new text file on the desktop and copy that entire log and paste it here.

*NOTE* If you receive any warning message about scripts, please choose to allow the script to run.

Thanks Phil - I am getting the error message from Norton - W32.desktophijack has been detected but the software cannot remove the threat. I tried running smitRem in safemode and it found an error with wininet.dll but when it tried to replace it, it came up with the message - no good copy of wininet.dll could be found, please contact your administrator (or something like that).

Silent Runners is negative.

Now that I know what the message is, I think it is Smitfraud. Let's give it a go. Don't worry about the Wininet problem.

Download smitRem.zip and save the file to your desktop.
Right click on the file and extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

Place a shortcut to Panda ActiveScan on your desktop.

Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/

Please read Ewido Setup Instructions
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

If you have not already installed Ad-Aware SE 1.06, follow these download and setup instructions, otherwise, check for updates:
Ad-Aware SE Setup
Don't run it yet!

Next, please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove all it finds.

Run Ewido:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.
  • You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
  • If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
  • DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
  • If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
  • Save the report to your desktop and post in to me in your reply.
Close Ewido

Next go to Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Web > Uncheck "Security Info" if present.

Reboot back into Windows and click the Panda ActiveScan shortcut, then do a full system scan.

Save the scan log and post it along with a new HijackThis Log, the contents of the smitfiles.txt log and the Ewido Log by using Add Reply.

Let me know if any problems persist.

~~~ A good copy of wininet.dll was not found. Look for more locations. ~~~
Adaware found a few problems and cleared them up.
Please can you advise next step as this has not cleared the problem
I have actually tried this procedure on a number of occasions as I have seen it on other threads, but it doesn't solve the problem, however, I tried it again just in case.
The only other thing that happens that you maybe should be aware of, is that when I log out an "End Program Now" type box comes up for a program called "Sample" and then for "Spyware Doctor" - maybe this is not loaded properly but I do not know what "Sample" is.
Please let me know next steps - I really appreciate your help.
Best Regards
Michael
Let's take care of your missing file first.
Click start>run and type command (cmd for NT).
Type:
copy c:\windows\system\wininet.dll c:\windows\desktop
Reboot. Scan the desktop folder with eTrust Web Scanner. When done, make sure the box is check for wininet.dll and click cure.
Reboot to command prompt and delete system\wininet and oleadm (oleext), then copy clean wininet from desktop.
del c:\windows\system\wininet.dll
del c:\windows\system\oleadm.dll (oleext.dll)
copy c:\windows\desktop\wininet.dll c:\windows\system
If all of that fails, go here and download the file:
Hi Phil
Good Morning
I was unable to copy the file to the desktop "Access Denied", originally, it couldn't find the file, then I realized that it was in the system32 folder, not the system folder.
I ran eTrust on the system32 folder and that did not pick up any infections.
I have now downloaded a new copy of wininet.dll to my root drive.
What should I do next?
Thanks
Good Morning Michael
MWav has never let me down, so let's try it. Please note that I have deliberately omitted "registry" in the list of scans.
Please download MWav to a convenient location.
This scan might take around 3+ hours to finish when set to scan everything.
I need you to run MWav by double-clicking on mwav.exe.
Put a check next to the below items before scanning:
  • Memory
  • Startup Folders
  • Drive - All Local Drives
  • Folder - then click "browse" to change the directory to C: (default is C:\Windows)
  • System Folders
  • Services
  • Include Sub-Directory
  • Scan All Files
Please make sure ALL of these are checked, then press the Scan button. This typically will take hours to complete.
**NOTE*** Sometimes MWav will pause and it appears to be finished, but it isn't done. Just let it run until it says it's complete.
On the bottom portion of the window, you will see the lower panel where MWav is listing "infected items". When it's done scanning, please highlight everything in that lower panel and copy them by holding CTRL + C then paste it here. The whole log will be extremely BIG so there is no way to post the log. I just need the infected items list.
