Hi. I'm running Windows XP and spybot continuously detects smitfraud-c. on my computer. I ran through the suggested steps (ie, clean up, ad-aware). My ewido and Hijackthis results are posted below.

Every time i run spybot the following message appears while checking for problems: "Warning. There were some problems in the include file c:\program files\spybot_search_destroy\include\hijackers.sbi. See include errors.log for details." After hitting the ok button on this warning message, spybot continues its search and tells me that i have a smitfraud-c. problem (29 problems) and Windows Security center.antivirusdisablenotify. I click the fix button and the windows problem says it is fixed (but it returns every time i run spybot), and spybot says it can't fix the smitfraud-c. problem.

I even ran spybot in safe mode after going through the suggested programs (ie, clean-up, adaware, etc) and the smitfraud-c. problem remains unrepaired. Please help! Thank you.

Download smitRem.exe and save the file to your desktop.
Double click on the file to extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

Place a shortcut to Panda ActiveScan on your desktop.

Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/

Please read Ewido Setup Instructions
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

If you have not already installed Ad-Aware SE 1.06, follow these download and setup instructions, otherwise, check for updates:
Ad-Aware SE Setup
Don't run it yet!

Next, please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
Now scan with HJT and place a checkmark next to each of the following items, then click FIX CHECKED:
===================================================
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://www.quicknavi...earch.php?qq=%1
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://www.quicknavi...earch.php?qq=%1
O9 - Extra button: Microsoft AntiSpyware helper - {BECFEE3B-C287-4AA0-A535-43A034B1B999} - (no file) (HKCU)
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Microsoft AntiSpyware helper - {BECFEE3B-C287-4AA0-A535-43A034B1B999} - (no file) (HKCU)

===================================================

Close HiJackThis.

Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove all it finds.

Run Ewido:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.
  • You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
  • If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
  • DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
  • If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
  • Save the report to your desktop
Close Ewido

Next go to Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Web > Uncheck "Security Info" if present.

Reboot back into Windows and click the Panda ActiveScan shortcut, then do a full system scan. Make sure the autoclean box is checked!
Save the scan log and post it along with a new HijackThis Log, the contents of the smitfiles.txt log and the Ewido Log by using Add Reply.
Let us know if any problems persist.

Hi Tampabelle,

sorry about the delay. The problem is on my dad's computer. I've been trying to coach him over the phone, but i don't think it's going to work. he tried completing your instructions and now he says that he has pop-ups on his computer too! :-)

I'm going to try to visit him Sunday (9/18) and run your instructions. May I post the requested info then? I apologize for the delay.

Thanks for your time,
Pcorps

Tampabelle,

Yes, spybot still finds the smitfraud problems. Here is a copy of the spybot report. I wasn't sure which information you wanted so I included the entire report.

We're also experiencing another problem now. We have the "Scotty WinPatrol" program loaded on the computer and it *cotinually* (like every 5 mins) displays a message about Adobe Photoshop. It says: "Scotty the watchdog is on patrol and has detected a change to one of your file type associations." Then it says, " Adobe Photoshop Album Starter Edition. C:\Program Files\Adobe\Photoshop Album Starter Edition\3.0\Apps\ComponentLauncher.exe"

It tells me that the above program is running and a change was made to the exact same thing! Then it asks if i want to allow it. Whether i press yes or now makes no difference. the alert comes again and again.

Thank you very much!

Hi Tampabelle,

It took me a while to get my dad to sit down and apply your last email....but fortunately, it worked! The smitfraud stuff is gone. Thank you so much for your help, and I sincerely apologize for dragging this process out.

Thanks for your help.
Kind regards,
Pcorps
