when starting up win xp home edition all seems ok till desk top then no icons appear nothing except the windows logo, no errors and mouse works(not frozen) ? any ideas.

Hi binatone...Welcome to G2G!
Do you have a Task Bar (Start Button)? Is this a new problem or does it follow an install of Windows?
Try right clicking the desktop, choose "Arrange Icons By", and make sure there is a check next to "Show desktop Icons.
