Hi, hairmach,

I still see a trojan in there.
We cannot use HijackThis until you move it to its own folder.
Rightclick on an empty space on your desktop and choose New > Folder
Name it HijackThis (HJT, or whatever)
Rightclick HijackThis.exe, choose Cut.
Doubleclick (to open) the folder you created.
Rightclick inside and choose Paste.
Scan again with HJT and please post a fresh log so we can get busy on your fix. Thanks :tazz:

Good job! Now we are on the right track.

Please print out these instructions so you can refer to them. You will be working in Safemode and will not have the internet.
Please disable SpySweeper until our entire fix is complete and you have received confirmation that your system is clean. SpySweeper's protective features that prevent bad changes to the registry may also prevent good ones, so we do not want to take any chance that it will interfere with our work.
To disable SpySweeper:
Open it click >Options over to the left then >program options >Uncheck "load at windows startup".
Over to the left click "shields" and uncheck all there.
Uncheck "home page shield".
Uncheck "automatically restore default without notification".
Exit the program.
[After your system is fully cleaned reenable Spysweeper using the same steps but this time reverse them.]

Configure to show all files/folders:
Go to Start>Search and at the top select Tools>Folder Options
Select the View tab
Display the contents of system folders
Show hidden files and folders
Uncheck: Hide protected operating system files
Click on Apply.
Next go to the side of the Search box and select All files and folders. Go down to More advanced options.
Be sure the first three boxes are selected:
Search System folders
Search Hidden Files and folders
Search SubFolders

I see that you have ewido.
Launch ewido. There should be an icon on your desktop double-click it.
The program will now go to the main screen
You will need to update ewido with TODAY'S definition files.
On the left hand side of the main screen click update
Then click on Start Update
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update ewido.
ewido manual updates

Once the updates are installed do the following:
  • Please reboot into Safemode:
    Turn on the computer.
Immediately begin tapping the F8 key (or F5 on some computers)
Use the arrow keys to highlight Safe Mode and press the Enter key.

    Open ewido again.
  • Click on scanner
    Then select "Settings"
Under the bottom section "What to Scan?" make sure "Scan every file" is checked.
Select "OK" and you will return to scanning options.
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.**
    • You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
    • If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
    • Select"Perform action on all infections"
    • If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
  • Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
  • Click Save report.
  • Save the report .txt file to your desktop.
Now close ewido security suite.

Still in Safemode, please launch HijackThis and tick these if they still exist:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {549B5CA7-4A86-11D7-A4DF-000874180BB3} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {FDD3B846-8D59-4ffb-8758-209B6AD74ACC} - (no file
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ShowWnd] ShowWnd.exe

These items are optional to fix depending on your needs. Fixing them here will not prevent you from opening them manually.
Removing these will free up some system resources:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NvMediaCenter] RUNDLL32.EXE C:\WINDOWS\System32\NvMcTray.dll,NvTaskbarInit
( Nvidia system tray applet -- Unnecessary)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [nForce Tray Options] sstray.exe /r
( nVidia nForce Taskbar Utility - quick access to the nForce2 "Sound Storm" control panel and related utilities) )

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Microsoft Works Update Detection] C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Works Shared\WkUFind.exe
( Checks for updates to MS Works -- Unnecessary)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] \"C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe\" -osboot
( RealPlayer scheduler -- Unnecessary)

Close all windows and click "Fix Checked".

Search for this file and delete it IF it still exists:
ShowWnd.exe It will probably be here: C:\WINDOWS\System32\

Reboot normally.

Please download CCleaner:
Download: CCleaner
http://www.ccleaner.com/
http://www.filehippo...d_ccleaner.html

Once installed, launch [b]CCleaner
:
Do not change any settings, except to make sure on the Options tab>Advanced "Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours" is NOT checked.
Click Run Cleaner (bottom right). When finished> Exit (top right) (reboot)

Please post a fresh HJT log as well as your ewido log. Thanks.

Your log appears to be clean.
Which program was it that put Nail into quarantine? Or do you mean ewido's backup? Can you click on it and Delete?
The only reason we fix things in Safemode once in a while is so that all files are not being used -- just in case a bad one is running at Startup and won't delete while it is running. As long as you were able to fix and delete that bad one, there is no problem.

Regarding your Viewpoint and your AOL:
Viewpoint Manager is a media player often bundled with AIM software. It is not technically considered malware, but is borderline adware and is often installed without a user's knowledge. ViewPoint Toolbar will hijack your search queries and also transmits non personally identifiable information back to their servers. Viewpoint media player is installed with AIM, AOL and a number of other products. For AOL and AIM it is needed to use their 3D icons known as Super Buddies and for customized themes, etc.
Viewpoint Manager is responsible for managing and updating Viewpoint Media Player's components. You can disable this using the Viewpoint Manager Control Panel found in the Windows Control Panel menu. By selecting "Disable auto-updating for the Viewpoint Manager" -- the player will no longer attempt to check for updates.

Let me know which quarantine has Nail and we'll figure out how open quarantine and delete it.

There is no anti-virus application that gets EVERYTHING. That is why we often have to run several scanners. In addition, if you tried to clean an infection on your own before posting your log, I cannot tell exactly what files went where.
Delete the bad file out of ewido's quarantine.

If Norton still finds this one, will it clean it?
C:\WINDOWS\nthqajd.exe
If not, boot into Safemode, browse to the file and delete it.

Reboot normally.

Let's run an online scan with Panda just to be sure your system is clean.
Panda: http://www.pandasoft...com/activescan/
Click on "Scan your PC"
A box will pop-up, click "Next"; Then, type in your email address and click "Send"
Select your Country and State/Region. Click "Start"
A message may appear asking you to agree to the installation of ActiveX components on your system, click "Yes".
Please make sure all five options are checked and then click "All my computer"
Another box will pop-up, click "Close". Your scan should then begin.
When it is finished, please click "See Report" then click "Save Report"
Please post the contents of the saved file. Also please post another HJT log. Thanks.

Your HJT log appears to be clean.

Let's do a couple of follow-up scans.
Please disable SpySweeper, so it does not prevent good changes from being made to your registry.

Please check to see if your Spybot is fully updated, and run a scan.
Reboot and run a scan with Ad-aware.

Download Ad-aware version SE Personal 1.06 from here:
Download from:
http://www.download....4-10045910.html
http://www.majorgeek...ownload506.html
Install by double-clicking on the downloaded file.
If you have a previous version of Ad-Aware installed, during the installation of the new version you will be prompted to uninstall or keep the older version - be sure to uninstall the previous version. After installing Ad-aware, you will be prompted to update the program and run a full scan. De-select all boxes so that it does not run. If you already have Ad-aware Second Edition skip to the next step.
Manually run "Ad-Aware SE Personal" and from the main screen Click on "Check for Updates Now".
Click the 'Connect'-button and, if there are new updates, click 'OK' and then 'Finish'.
Once the definitions have been updated:
Do NOT scan with the program yet.
Please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by immediately tapping the F8 key (or F5 on some computers)
Use the arrow keys to highlight Safe Mode and press the Enter key.
Once in Safe Mode, launch Ad-Aware, and press Start > Next to let it scan your drives...
It will find a number of "bad" files and registry keys. Press 'Next'
Right-click in that results pane and choose "select all"
Press "Next" again
It will ask you whether you'd like to remove all checked items. Click OK.
Finally, close Ad-Aware, and start your computer normally.

That should have you pretty clean, so you can enable SpySweeper again.
Let me know how things are running. If you are having no problems, we'll flush System Restore and I'll give you my prevention tips.

Sorry to hear of your disappointment, but as with any infection, the healing takes time.

If you have not already done so, let's go back and rehide Protected System Files:
Go to Start>Search and at the top select Tools>Folder Options
Select the View tab
Display the contents of system folders
Show hidden files and folders
Check: Hide protected operating system files
Click on Apply.

After something like this it is a good idea to purge the Restore Points and start fresh.
To flush the XP System Restore Points:
(Using XP, you must be logged in as Administrator to do this.)

Go to Start>Run and type msconfig Press enter.
When msconfig opens, click the Launch System Restore Button.
On the next page, click the System Restore Settings Link on the left.
Check the box labeled Turn Off System Restore.

Reboot. Go back in and turn System Restore ON. A new Restore Point will be created.

You log still seems to be clean, so you are good to go.

Here is my standard list of simple steps that you can take to reduce the chance of infection in the future.

You may have already taken some of these steps:
1. Visit Windows Update:
Make sure that you have all the Critical Updates recommended for your operating system and IE. The first defense against infection is a properly patched OS.
Windows Update: http://v4.windowsupd.../en/default.asp

2. Adjust your security settings for ActiveX:
Go to Internet Options/Security/Internet, press 'default level', then OK.
Now press "Custom Level."
In the ActiveX section, set the first two options ("Download signed and unsigned ActiveX controls) to 'prompt', and 'Initialize and Script ActiveX controls not marked as safe" to 'disable'.

3. Download and install the following free programs:
a. SpywareBlaster: http://www.javacools...areblaster.html
b. SpywareGuard: http://www.javacools...ywareguard.html
Periodically check for updates.

4. Keep your antivirus software and firewall software up to date.
Note: Zone Alarm Firewall (Zone Labs) http://www.zonelabs....ontent/home.jsp is free.
Also Sygate has an optional free version: http://smb.sygate.com/download_buy.htm

5. You might consider installing Mozilla / Firefox.
http://www.mozilla.org/

6. Install spyware detection and removal programs:
You may also want to consider installing either or both of AdAware (free version) and Spybot S&D (freeware). Use these programs to regularly scan your system for and remove many forms of spyware/malware.
a. AdAware: http://www.lavasoft....ftware/adaware/

b. SpyBot S&D: http://safer-network...2005-05-31.html
http://www.majorgeek...wnload2471.html
http://security.koll...n&page=download
I would check for updates in SpyBot once a week or so.
Check for updates in Adaware frequently.
I scan with each at least weekly.

7. Before using or purchasing any Spyware/Malware protection/removal program, always check the Rogue/Suspect Spyware List. It will save you a lot of grief, as well as money if you are thinking of purchasing. Here is the link: http://www.spywarewa...nti-spyware.htm
If you want to know just how effective your anti-spyware program is, or how well any of the "rogue" programs listed at the above link work, check this for an independent comparison of several anti-spyware programs: http://www.spywarewa...-test-guide.htm

8. I also suggest that you delete any files from "temp", "tmp" folders. In Internet Explorer, click on "Tools" => "Internet Options" => "Delete Files" and select the box that says "Delete All Offline Content" and click on "OK" twice. Also, empty the recycle bin by right clicking on it and selecting "Empty Recycle Bin". These steps should be done on a regular basis.

9. After you use Windows XP for some time, the prefetch folder can get full of rarely used or obsolete links which can slow down your computer boot time noticeably. We recommend you delete all files in this folder about once a month.
To find the prefetch folder, enter this in the explorer address bar:
%windir%\prefetch
This should take you to either C:\WINDOWS\PREFETCH or C:\WINNT\PREFETCH. Delete all the files there. http://www.hexff.com/xp_tuneup.php

10. You might want to take a look at this article, too.
