First, I know I should take the machine back (and I will if I can't get the drive working), but I soent about 5 hours updating windows, adjusting settings, downloading s/w etc. An hour or 2 to fix this is worth it.

OK, here is the problem:

Combo DVD/CD RW shows in My computer and actually opens and closed. Problem is nothing happens - starts to spin, lights start briefly and then it stops. The system sees the drive and the device manager shows its working properly but it cannot (and never has) read any media.

Another interesting tidbit - the DVD has no region set in the device manager properties and it will not let me set a region.

I removed the device using device manager and reinstalled - no help.
I tried to update the driver - no help.
I tried to use other s/w (media players) to access the drive - no luck.

Any other thoughts before I trudge back to Fry's

Thanks, Jim

You could try to see if there are any firmware updates for the drive, but don't do that if you can return the drive because it could void the warranty. But the odds of anyone actually checking the firmware version is highly unlikely and most likely wouldn't happen until you have a replacement in your hands anyways. I would also check on the manufacturer's website for any kinds of driver updates you could download, like with HP drives you have to download their DLA crap to make it work correctly.
