Hopefully, somebody can help me. This afternoon when I turned on my computer, there was no start bar and it didn't make its usual humming sounds when it booted up. Also, my internet explorer is not working and I cannot use Norton or Mcafee but did use other virus removal programs.
I am using Mozilla Firefox as my browser...

Run Hijackthis. Click on "Open the Misc Tools section". Next click on "Open uninstall manager".
Press the button 'save list'. It will open a Notepad file. Place the content of that file here in your in your next post.



Next please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner

Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.

• The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
• Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  
• Now click on Scan Settings
• In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
  • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
  Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
  
  • Scan Options:
  Scan Archives
  Scan Mail Bases
• Click OK
• Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer
• This will program will start and scan your system.
• The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
• Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
  • Now click on the Save as Text button:
• Save the file to your desktop.
• Copy and paste that information in your next post.

Download PFind.zip and unzip the contents to its own permanent folder.

Reboot your computer into Safe Mode

Locate the pfind.bat file and double-click it to run it. It will start scanning your computer and could take a little while so be patient. When the DOS window closes, reboot back to normal mode.

Post the contents of C:\pfind.txt along with a new hijackthis log.

The good news is that I don't find any malware in those logs.

Click Start -> Run
At the prompt type sfc /scannow Please note that there is a single space between sfc and /scannow.


This will scan your system for any missing or corrupted system files. Just follow the prompts.

Try this to bring up the Run box. On your keyboard hit the Windows button and R at the same time. The Windows button is usually down on the bottom of your keyboard to the left of the spacebar.

That should bring up the run box where you can type in sfc /scannow

I did that and it seems like the program ran but then nothing happened at the end of it, I never got prompted to do anything...

I think I have some kind of virus or something because every virus scan that I try becomes disabled in some way before the scanning process is able to be intitiated. I was able to use Housecall, though, but Norton, Mcafee, and a slew of other products all failed to actually get to that scanning step.

My start button is absent, Internet explorer is non-functional, and my computer takes a long time to boot up...

Is there anything else I can do or am I doomed as I feel???

In addition, there are no buttons in the lower right hand of the screen where the volume speaker button usually resides along with the mcafee button and the dell button...

My desktop is filled with icons like it normally is, but the buttons on the lower left (start menu) and lower right (dell, volume, macafee) are totally absent.

Also, when i hit ctrl-alt-del, the box that comes up is much longer than it usually is and takes up the entire height of the screen...

I tried to disenable system restore but was unable to do so -- it siad that system restore encountered an error trying to enable/disable one or more drives and to restart my computer and try again, which i did but it did not change anything...
