Hi there,

Could anyone please advise me on how to stop pop-ups from appearing in my system. I keep getting pop-ups from azjmp and ads1.revenue.net in IE and spotsresult in Opera. Attach below are the logs from VX2.BetterInternet and HijackThis. I also noticed that each time I reboot my system, I get the message that Setup is updating my Configuration file. I suspect that this is the way by which the Spyware keeps re-installing itself into my system. Any help would be most appreciated. As mentioned, I am running Win98 SE with IE and Opera as the browsers on my system.

Spybot Search & Destroy Download and install. Start Spybot S&D, Click the Search for updates button, if any are found then click the Download Updates button. After all updates are downloaded, click the Check for problems button. When the scan is complete, place a check next to anything marked in red, then click the Fix selected problems button. You may need to run Spybot S&D multiple times to remove all infections.

When finished, Reboot your computer.

Download Ad-aware from: http://www.geekstogo...n=download&id=5

Install the program and launch it.

First, in the main window, look in the bottom right corner and click on Check for updates now and download the latest reference files.

Next, we need to configure Ad-aware for a full scan.

-> Click on the Gear icon (second from the left) to access the preferences/settings window

1. In the General window make sure the following are selected:
  • Automatically save log-file
  • Automatically quarantine objects prior to removal
  • Safe Mode (always request confirmation)
2. Click on the Scanning button on the left and select :
  • Scan Within Archives
  • Scan Active Processes
  • Scan Registry
  • Deep Scan Registry
  • Scan my IE favorites for banned URL’s
  • Scan my Hosts file
  • Under Click here to select drives + folders, choose:
  • All of your hard drives
-> Click on the Advanced button on the left and select:
  • Include additional process information
  • Include additional file information
  • Include environment information
  • Include additional object details
-> Click the Tweak button and select:
  • Under the Scanning Engine:
    • Unload recognized processes during scanning
    • Include basic Ad-aware settings in logfile
    • Include additional Ad-aware settings in logfile
  • Under the Cleaning Engine:
    • Let Windows remove files in use at next reboot
-> Click on Proceed to save the settings.

-> Click Start and on the next screen choose Activate in-depth Scan at the bottom of the page and then choose:
  • Use Custom Scanning Options
-> Click Next and Ad-aware will scan your hard drive(s) with the options you have selected.

-> Save the log file when it asks and then click Finish

-> When finished, mark everything for removal and get rid of it. (Right-click the window and choose Select All from the drop down menu and click Next).

-> Reboot your computer.

If you would please, rescan with HijackThis and post a fresh log in this same topic.

As mentioned previously, I am still getting this message about Setup updating my Configuration files when booting up my system. Any ideas on how to review this and stop it if it is related to the pop-ups?

Many Thanks.

Hi Jonny,

After posting the last reply, I did a few more test and here are the findings:

Having installed CWShredder, I updated it and ran it on my system. I found the following CWS files: CWS.BootConf and CWS.Svchost32. I clicked the Fix button to delete these files and re-booted my system. After re-booting, I ran CWShredder again and it reported no errors. However when I re-booted my system a third time, the 2 files appeared again. I think these are the 2 files that keep giving me these annoying pop-ups.

Likewise for Spybot S&D, running this program keeps giving me the same errors even after asking it to Fix the problems discovered. As I am typing this reply, the azjmp pop-up has appeared again.

If I ever get my hands on the idiots who are responsible, I will do some very nasty things to them!!

Anyway, I hope this additional info with help.

Many thanks.

Reset your host file. Click Here to download HostsFileReader. To reset the host file to default, simply open the program, click the "reset default" button, and confirm the changes.

Reboot your PC.

If you would please, rescan with HijackThis and post a fresh log in this same topic, and let us know how your system's working. :tazz:

Hi there,

I finally managed to solve this problem. I did try to reset my Host file via the HostfileReader but that also didn't work. In the end the problem was solved with a combination of Webroot Spy Sweeper and Symantec AntiVirus. I find Spy Sweeper especially good as it stopped attempts to write to my Hosts file and found 3 other spywares/adwares that the others didn't.

Anyway many thanks to everyone for their helpful suggestions and advise.

Wishing everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

Best Regards.
