I keep getting windows errors saying "The instuction at '0x0#######' referenced memory at '0x00000000'" where # represents a bunch of hexidecimal digits. I seems random as to when it occurs. Three numbers I've recorded recently are "0x030a0bd8", "0x027c0bd8", and "0x0e80bd8". These popped up every time I trying to move the mouse over a certain .avi file. Even after rebooting I got the same error. I read a post that said to deactivate the avi file extension using shellexview. Afterwards I was able to click on the file, no problems. I thought it was fixed, up then I opened up a game called Wolfenstein Enemy Territory and I started getting the error again. I've heard that this error can occur because of a virus. I have norton and scan regularly. I've also ran adware and removed the cookies it brings up yet the errors continue. The virus scan came up with one infection of the PE_Finaldo.A Virus. This is good that it found this, but I don't believe it is the cause of the errors I've been experiencing. I say this because the infected file was one I recently downloaded after I was alreading having troubles. I also ran the tojan scanner, but it came up clean.

Oh and I cleaned up the virus. Are there any other troubleshooting solutions I can try to fix the memory could not be written errors? Your input is appreciated. Thanks.

I don't think you have a virus. I'd guess it's just a corrupt AVI file. Is it important? Can you just delete it?

Ok see if you can make sense of this. The avi file I was having trouble with was a short flick from a review site. I had a collection of about 5 or six different ones. Earlier I had moved the files to a different folder. At the time it seemed to resolve the problem(no more memory written error). Then after your last post, Admin, I went back to that folder and sure enough I got the memory written error. So after windows explorer was forced to close I went back to the folder that had the movies, but I didn't open it. Instead I used Winrar to archive the folder in .RAR format and checked "delete files after archiving". Then I opened the archive with winrar and one by one checked each file. I checked each file by first extracting it to a temp folder I created then running the mouse over the file. Before that was all I had to do. Sure enough the file gave me an error so I deleted it from the archive and proceeded to check the other files with no more instances. Note I was able to play the file directly from the archive with no errors. I only got the error when I dragged the mouse over the extracted file.

Well about half way through I decided that I wanted to recover this file just in case it was something else. The original archive before I deleted the movie was in the recycling bin so I recovered it. Then I extracted the same file. THIS time no error! At all! Isn't that strange? Why would it do that? This makes me think that it's not just the file but something with windows explorer or windows itself! I'm not sure.

I've experienced similar problems myself after transfering files to a new hard drive. Everything else worked okay. Never did identify the problem, but just deleted the file. I suspect it may be related to Windows Media Player. If you haven't upgraded, try downloading the latest version:
