hi, i recently bought a laptop to use at work. at home i use sbc yahoo dsl and at work we have wireless internet. when my work tech first configurated my laptop the internet connects but very very slowly. tech came to look at it again and said i must remove my sbc software. after i removed it it won't connect at all. tech looked at it again and said i need to remove broadjump client. did that, still won't connect. now the tech won't even come anymore, said she's wasted 3 hours on my laptop and there's nothing she can do. when i'm at work my laptop does detect and connects wirelessly but web pages doesn't load. when i try to "repair" the connection it says "renewing ip" forever until it and i give up. can you help? please tell me you can!

Hi Helpless

You should be able to reinstall the programs that your tech has removed, from what it sounds like,

It does sound like your tech setup the DNS, and DHCP to the companies server and not to try and get an DNS server automatically, which should allow you to take the laptop to work and home again with out connection issues.

While at your office, go Start - Run, type in cmd and press enter, at the command prompt, type in ipconfig /all, and see what your IP Addy is. For a test, after you get your IP Addy info, type in ipconfig /release, then ipconfig /renew. Are you getting a new address, maybe even the same, quickly or very slllooowwwlllllllyyyy.

Try the same thing at home, if you IP Addy starts with 169. you are not receiving a address from DCHP and your cp is assigning itself one. It also depends on what type of wireless connection you have, if you happen to know if it is B or G, the speeds of the connection will be different. Hope some of this helps and keep us posted, I am sure that we can work this out. happy.gif

hi spank me!
thank you for your quick response. much of what you said sounded like greek to me (yeah, i'm that helpless), but i gave it a try.

at my work nothing came up when i typed ipconfig/all.

at home i connect by hardwiring my laptop to the dsl modem. with ipconfig/all i have an ip address starting with 63.

with ipconfig/release it said "No operation can be performed on Wireless Network Connections while it has its media disconnected." also "IP address for adapter Local Area Connection has already been released."

with ipconfig/renew it said "No operation can be performed on Wireless Network Connections while it has its media disconnected." and "An error occured while renewing interface Local Area Connection: The RPC server is unavailable."

i don't know if this is at all useful to you. my tech at work told me after i remove sbc dsl connection software my laptop should just detect the wireless internet at work but that hasn't happend. do you think she needs to reconfigure my laptop?
i have 54g integrated 802.11b/g, by the way. i really appreciate your help. it's quite a change from my tech.

Hi Helpless

Sorry for the late reply, I have been out of town for the last couple of days, check out this link to see if your current settings are the same. I will continue to read a bit to see what I can figure out for you.

Sorry if some of this does confuse you, but it is a necessary step in troubleshooting your issues, I would say that it is Geek speak and not Greek.... :tazz:
