Hi,
I am trying to use the tasklist command to retrieve the list of processes from a remote computer. Below are the details...

Computer A (1.1.1.1):
Win XP Pro
Logged in as Administrator
No firewalls enabled, etc

Computer B (1.1.1.2):
Win XP Pro
Logged in as administrator
no firewalls, etc

So, on Computer A I open a command prompt and type:

tasklist /S 1.1.1.2 /U administrator /P password /FO TABLE

....I get the following error:
ERROR: Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password.

No, I am 100% positive the user name and password are correct, b/c I set them myself, and I logged onto computer B using them.

Any ideas???

out of curiousity, does it work without the filter?, just:

tasklist /S 1.1.1.2 /U administrator /P password /FO TABLE

Also, does it work with the system name (ie: server1), rather than IP address?

Finally, any firewalls on the remote system?

..didn't work

..didn't work.

The remote machine does not have a firewall, all is clear.

One interesting thing I tried: tasklist /S 1.1.1.2

which prompted me for a password..."Type the password for computerA\Administrator" ....why would it want the admin password for the local machine?

I tried: tasklist /S 1.1.1.2 /U computerB\Administrator .....and it prompts for the password, which i supply, and does not work.

one more note, these win xp computers are not on a domain...they are workgroup computers.

doesn't matter if they are workgroups or domains...works both ways.

with password
test

try that account
I see no reason why this is not working....command works just fine on a workgroup here

had you disabled any services on the remote or host machine? Or are they set at defaults?

they are set to default, haven't messed with them. I'm really lost as to what is going on. I have tried it against a win2k3 server from my win xp and it worked just fine. same setup except the OS and type of computer were different.

change the workgroup name on both machines...

sp1 or sp2?


can you run remote tasklist from computerB to computerA

both have same workgroup name: WORKGROUP

both have SP2 (and latest windows updates)

tasklist does not work from A to B or B to A

you've disabled the built in windows firewall (you should not have to).

These pcs are connected...how? router/switch? Hub? VPN?

It has got to be something blocking the ports, or....?

could you run a hijack log on the second machine and post it here so I can see what is runnin...not looking for malware, just some sort of security software
