Hello MDTates,

Please read this post completely, it may make it easier for you if you copy and paste this post to a new text document or print it for reference later.

Step 1-Necessary Steps
1.You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
Then click on Start Update.
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
(the status bar at the bottom will display ("Update successful")
Exit ewido. DO NOT scan yet.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update ewido.
ewido manual updates

Step 2-The Fix
1.Go to Start | Run and type this in the box: services.msc click ok
  • Locate these services, 'Windows Overlay Components' then right click and select properties.
  • Under Service Status: select Stop
  • In the drop down box labeled, Startup Type: select Disabled

2.Next, please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

3.Now scan with HJT and place a checkmark next to each of the following items:

Hello MDTates,

Things are looking alot better but there is still one file that concerns me.

1.Please run HijackThis and place a check next to the following item.
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [frecxci] C:\WINDOWS\frecxci.EXE

After checking these entries CLOSE ALL open windows [browsers and programs] EXCEPT HijackThis and click "Fix Checked."
===================================================

2.Click here to download Pocket Killbox by Option^Explicit. Extract it from the zip file then double-click on Killbox.exe to run it. Place the following lines (complete paths) in bold in the "Full Path of File to Delete" box in Killbox, and click the red button with the white X on it after each. Keep track of any files it tells you either could not be found or could not be deleted, as you'll need those later:

C:\WINDOWS\frecxci.EXE

For the files that it either couldn't find or couldn't delete, in the killbox again this time, put a mark next to "Delete on Reboot". Copy and paste each file into the file name box, then click the red button with the X after each. It will ask you if you want to reboot each time you click it, answer NO until after you've pasted the last file name, at which time you should answer Yes.

If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run TheKillbox, click here to download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try TheKillbox again.

3.Once back in normal mode please run a scan with HijackThis and post a fresh log for me to review. Also please let me know how your system is running at this time.

Thank you,

Snickets

Hello MDTates,

Your log looks clean but it seems there is still something on the machine if you are getting random pop ups. Let's run another scan and see if it will take care of the problem for you.

1.Please go here and download the free trial for SpySweeper.

2.Once installed please open up the program and push on the options tab then click on update definitions.

3.Once the definitions are installed please click on the sweep now tab and do a complete scan and removal of all items found for me.

4.Then please reboot your computer at this time.

5.Then please reopen spysweeper and click on the results tab and copy and paste all of the information that is in this section into your next post. Also please run a new HijackThis scan and post the log from this into the thread as well.

Thank you,

Snickets

Hello MDTates,

It appears as though things are right as rain now, please follow the steps below as they will save you alot of heartache in the long run.

I suggest removing SpySweeper as it is only a trial version and is unneccessary if you have the right tools to prevent further infection.

Congratulations your log appears to be clean!!!

Please remove these entries from Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel.
SpySweeper

Please follow these directions below to clear out your system restore points and also make sure to read the prevention tips on how to prevent further infection on your p.c.

1.One last step to take in fixing your computer.
After something like this it is a good idea to purge the Restore Points and start fresh.
To flush the XP System Restore Points:
(Using XP, you must be logged in as Administrator to do this.)
Go to Start>Run and type msconfig Press enter.
When msconfig opens, click the Launch System Restore Button.
On the next page, click the System Restore Settings Link on the left.
Check the box labeled Turn Off System Restore.
Reboot.
Go back in and turn System Restore ON. A new Restore Point will be created.

2.Go to Start>Search and at the top select Tools>Folder Options
Select the View tab
Check the following:
Do not Show hidden files and folders
Hide protected operating system files
Click on Apply.
Close out the search window.

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:

Detect and Remove Programs:
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
Prevention Programs:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
Other necessary Programs:
  • AntiVirus Program<= An AntiVirus program is a must! Whether it is a free version like AVG or Anti-Vir, or a shareware version like Norton or Kapersky, this is a must have.
  • Firewall<= A firewall is definatley a must have. Two good free versions are Sygate and ZoneLabs.
  • More Secure Browser<= Internet Explorer is not the most secure and best browser. There are safer and better alternatives available. I recommend Firefox, however Opera and SlimBrowsers are good as well.
And also see TonyKlein's good advice
So how did I get infected in the first place? and Spyware Aid's spyware article: Spyware, Adware, Malware: What it is, how it got on my computer, how to get rid of it, and how to prevent it.

Thank you,

Snickets
