Hi all, i'm hoping you can help me with this.

My system was infected with PSGuard with an infected WININET.DLL, hijacked desktop and popups. Following instructions in other posts here I have:

1) Run smitRem - cleaned up wininet.dll.
2) Run Ad-Aware - removed all the critical objects
3) Run Ewido - removed everything it found -no false positives
all of these were in safe mode with hidden/system folders showing
4) Run the Panda Activescan - cleaned all it found
5) Uninstalled the PSGuard software and deleted it's folder

I've now got - clean wininet.dll, the desktop was previously plain black with warning text about spyware, now it's just plain text.

Still only screen saver and settings tabs in the display properties dialogue box.

Still getting pop-ups window title is 'only the best'.

And just to make sure i've run smitrem, ewido and ad-aware again.

So here's my HJT log hoping you can help. Thanks in advance.

Hi, can you send me a copy of next file please?

C:\WINDOWS\videoc.dll

Send it to miekiemoesATmalware-research.co.uk (AT=@)

Then..

Open notepad and copy and paste next bold in it:

regedit /e peek.txt "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies"
regedit /e peek2.txt "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop"
type peek.txt>>look.txt
type peek2.txt>>look.txt
start notepad look.txt

Save this as look.bat , choose to save as *all files and place it on your desktop.
This is how the batch must look after you created it: Posted Image
Doubleclick on it and notepad will open with some txt in it. Copy and paste this in your next reply. :tazz:

Save this as fix.reg Choose to save as *all files and place it on your desktop.
This is how the regfix must look after you created it: Posted Image
Doubleclick on it and when it asks you if you want to merge the contents to the registry, click yes/ok.

Hi,

Yes, I think we solved it. :tazz:

Perform a full scan with an updated Adaware SE and/or Spybot S&D to get rid of the leftovers.
If you don't have those programs yet, you can find the downloadlocations in my sig.

To keep this clean in the future, I would suggest the following things:

Install Spywareblaster
SpywareBlaster doesn`t scan and clean for so-called spyware, but prevents it from being installed in the first place. It blocks the popular spyware ActiveX controls, and also prevents the installation of any of them via a webpage.

Avoid illegal sites, because that's where most malware is present.

Let your antispywarescanner(s) scan frequently and don't forget to update before.

And I do suggest you perform an online virusscan once in a while. (Housecall and/or Bitdefender). Because what one virusscanner can't find another one maybe can.
Also make sure that your virusscanner, the one that is installed on your system is always up to date!

Make sure your windows has the latest updates, so visit asap http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ to update to SP2.

If you are having XP SP2, read here how to configure Security Features for Internet Explorer:
http://www.microsoft...xp/iesecxp.mspx

More info on how to prevent malware you can also find here (By Tony Klein)

Happy surfing again! :)
