That's not good... Your system is so crippled that to get it working you'd have to get in as Administrator...

Every possible solution we may come up with will tell you to get logged on as Administrator. It is a special account which will give you, just a tad more control than any other user with Administrator privileges.

I suggest before going on to make a copy of all the thigs you want to keep... Copy it to a floppy disc, another hard disc/USB stick, burn a CD/DVD. That way at least you won't lose your data!

HI KAT!

Sorry for the slow reply...been a little under-the-weather.

Ok! I tried getting back into the computer by using origional Admin account. It no longer says the profile may be corrupt ...it says that only the Admin(profile name) can unlock this computer.

So what does that mean? Is the profile still screwy or is it just locked now?

Dazed and Confused, for sure.

Thanks,
Ruthy

Hi Ruth,

Sorry for the slow reply...been a little under-the-weather.

First.... Get back to health! That's more important than the computer. the computer won't change in the meantime.

Ok!  I tried getting back into the computer by using origional Admin account.  It no longer says the profile may be corrupt ...it says that  only the Admin(profile name) can unlock this computer.

I'm not sure what you are saying. Can you log in as Administrator? And it loads all the way? You can run programs? Etc.... When does it say only the Administrator can unlock the computer? And what is the precise text. That way I have something to search with to try and find an answer for you.

HI Kat and Bobbi
THanks for not closing my thread.
I am beginning to feel like Dorothy...Hurricanes and Tornadoes and Power Outages...OH MY!

Since our last outing I decided to just delete the original Admin profile. But, alas, it was actually saved in one of the many accounts I copied it to. So, I would like to proceed and get rid of this keylogger and any other pests that may be lurking.... Here is a copy of HJT and Spyware Doc.

Will await your reply.
Thanks Ruthy

Hi Ruthy! :) Welcome back. I had a feeling that you may have been hit with another power outage.

I'm going to sit here in the background on this. I"ve asked Bobbi to stop in when he gets online in a couple of hours. I am dealing with a very devastating family tragedy right now, and my brain is not functioning well at all right now. I don't want to lead you wrong. You are in the bestest hands with Bobbi, never fear! :) :tazz:

Hi Ruth,

Welcome back!

Since our last outing I decided to just delete the original Admin profile.  But, alas, it was actually saved in one of the many accounts I copied it to.  So, I would like to proceed and get rid of this keylogger and any other pests that may be lurking.... Here is a copy of HJT and Spyware Doc.

As far as I know you cannot delete the original Administrator account. You can rename it, but not kill it.

I've been re-reading the thread to get back to speed on your logs. I did notice a lot of different places you run HijackThis from. Can you delete all versions of HijackThis you have on your computer apart from one. Otherwise there will be many different places where backups are coming from, and that might confuse use all. So, please move HijackThis to another location, preferably c:\Program Files\HijackThis. Anywhere is fine, other than your Desktop or a Temp folder. If HijackThis is in a temporary folder you run the risk of accidentally deleting the backups or it clutters your desktop with all the backups.
If you use Windows XP it might be that you just double clicked on the file HijackThis.exe, but that only extracts the file to a temporary folder. Please select the file and Extract it to a folder.

How do you make a permanent folder:

Click "My Computer", then "C:\" and then on "Program Files".
In the menu bar, "File"->"New"->"Folder".
That will create a folder named "New Folder", which you can rename to "HJT" or "HijackThis".
Now you have "C:\Program Files\HijackThis". Put your HijackThis.exe there.

Run HijackThis, click on "Scan" and check the boxes next to all these items.

O16 - DPF: {56336BCB-3D8A-11D6-A00B-0050DA18DE71} - http://software-dl.r...ip/RdxIE601.cab

Then close all windows, and browsers, except HijackThis. Tell HijackThis to "Fix checked". Restart your computer and post a new log in this thread.

Then on to business at hand...

Administrator accounts, etc...

In my post from September the 14th I asked about the message saying the Administrator can unlock the computer. Do you still get that? If so when? And what is the precise text?

How many user accounts are there on the machine? Can you log in as an Administrator?

Can you tell us anything else that is odd about your computer.... I saw that you had downloaded Silent Runners. Can you post a log from that as well.

Hi Bobbi,

After I deleted the account I have had no problems logging in as the Admin on my original account. I have 2 profiles set up. The original profile and a 2nd one I use everyday. I don't use the original profile for the reason that stuff happens, as I just learned. I keep it for emergency use only.

I do have a few problems with the machine. 1) Files and folders take ForeveR to Open and Close. (hate that hourglass because it seems like it takes that long now)

Also I have to hit my back button 3-5 times for it to work. Pictures still not loading on web pages. Computer seems much slower than it did b4 the problems occured.

Hi Ruth,

C:\DOCUME~1\Ruth_2\LOCALS~1\Temp\Temporary Directory 1 for hijackthis.zip\HijackThis.exe
C:\HJT\HijackThis.exe

Please get rid of all HijackThis's (??) apart from the one in C:\HJT. The problem of the backups will remain otherwise.

Phew.... The log is clean. But I have a suspicion that you are running from Safe Mode. Since that hides a lot from me I want you to make sure that you are in Normal Mode and repost both HijackThis and SilentRunner logs.

Go to "Start" -> "Run" and type in the box: "cleanmgr". Let it scan your system for files to remove. Make sure these 3 are checked and then press "Ok" to remove:
  • Temporary Files
  • Temporary Internet Files
  • Recycle Bin
Run a diskdefragmenter to defragment your hard disc. If you have no Disk Defragmenter like Norton's Speed Disk or DisKeeper, right-click on "My Computer" and choose "Manage" from the menu. In the window that pops up choose the defragmenter and defragment your discs. Now your computer should be faster.

I'll see if we can do something about the ther problems.

Hi Ruthy! Bobbi won't be on for a few hours yet. Can you do something for me if you get a chance tonight before you post?? Run the SpywareDoctor again. That is the program that showed us the keylogger before!! I want Bobbi to see a fresh log from SpywareDoctor, so he can see what it is we had been trying to work on all this time! :tazz:

Thanks!

Hi Kat and Bobbi,

First, I am not running in safe mode, I hope. Just a normal log-on.

I have deleted all the HJT's I can find except for one. I have a 30 gig capacity but have deleted most everything but 2.7 gigs which is mostly hardware and software needed to run the computer. There shouldn't be a whole lot left to check. :)

the thing that really bugs me is the backbutton. Having to strike the key 3-5 times b4 it works and then it is hard to tell where it will back-up to. :tazz:

WIll post HJT log. SilentRunner log and Kat asked for a spyware doc log.
Hope this is sufficient...let me know.

Thanks Ruthy!

Hey Ruth,

First, I am not running in safe mode, I hope.  Just a normal log-on.

You don't see the words Safe Mode on the screen. That's good. The reason I asked is because I saw so few services... can hardly believe there is just one running.

HijackThis looks clean. Just as SilentRunners.

Launch Notepad, and copy/paste the box below into a new text file. Save it as fixme.reg and save it on your Desktop.

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon]
"IgnoreShiftOveride"=-

Locate fixme.reg on your Desktop and double-click on it.
You will receive a prompt similar to: "Do you wish to merge the information into the registry?".
Answer "Yes" and wait for a message to appear similar to "Merged Successfully".

The above Registry file was written specifically for this infection on this person's computer. It is NOT to be used on another computer, as it may cause damage that could result in a format!

Please create a list of programs that can be removed using Add/Remove Programs
Start HiJackThis. Click "Config"->"Misc Tools"->"Open Uninstall Manager" ->"Save List".
Save the log to a convenient location, and copy it into this thread.

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\sys005.log

Is this file present? Can you open it with Notepad? What is in it? If this file is what I think it is, do not post it. It can reveal a lot about you. So for now I just want you to verify that it is there, and look so you know what is in it. Rename the file afterwards. Restart your computer and got surf around.... Don't do anything that a keylogger may be interested in like typing passwords or bank credit things... Is the file back? If so, what is in it?

Post back with the answers, so I can interpret what the file is and or does.
Thanks

Hi Bobbi.

Ok here goes...

1). Yes, there was fil file named..sys005. It had things like profile name, owed, listen, timewait, net provider name, and numbers and symbols followed each word and what looked like an computer ip kind-of-address. I renamed and surfed like you asked. Rechecked and the file could not be found in search.

2). The second thing you asked for I did. Saved to desktop with a fixme. file. The reply why I clicked ok was..."The specified file is not a registry script. You can only import binary registry files from within the registry editor. So it is on the desktop waiting on further instructions....

Thanks Ruthy

P.S. Before I deleted the profile that got screwy, I had 50 or 60 of those "weird" files like the one I posted with the Greekish-type symbols. But, after I deleted that profile I haven't seen any of those files in that folder again.

Hi Ruth,

1).  Yes, there was fil file named..sys005.  It had things like profile name, owed, listen, timewait, net provider name, and numbers and symbols followed each word and what looked like an computer ip kind-of-address.  I renamed and surfed like you asked.  Rechecked and the file could not be found in search.

That sounds reassuring... Let's see if it remains gone...

2). The second thing you asked for I did.  Saved to desktop with a fixme. file.  The reply why I clicked ok was..."The specified file is not a registry script.  You can only import binary registry files from within the registry editor.  So it is on the desktop waiting on further instructions....

I think you accidentally saved it as a wrong file type. Can you open the file the file and save it as "All file types". Then retry...

P.S.  Before I deleted the profile that got screwy, I had 50 or 60 of those "weird" files like the one I posted with the Greekish-type symbols.  But, after I deleted that profile I haven't seen any of those files in that folder again.

I'm not sure what you mean, but it sounds good. Do you mean something like this? Otherwise I'm sure my friend the chocolate hoarding kitty will enlighten me.....
