Dear Sir or Madame,

I have a problem with my homepage being redirected to http://mail.yahoo.co...er=slv&.intl=us and I have completed the instructions prior to posting e.g. Norton, Adware, spybot e.t.c.. Below is a summary of the Hijaak log for your viewing. Please help and am looking forward to your reply.

Dear Sir or Madame,

I have lost control over my homepage because IE will point to this http://mail.yahoo.co...efer=slv&.intl= site for no reason at all. This keeps repeating whenever I try to backspace it. However, I can periodically get off this page with a rapid double click on the backspace button but not always. My homepage on IE Tools did not change. All diagnostics were performed - Spybot, Adware, Norton AV etc. Please advice and I look forward to your reply. Thanks in advance.

Hello Peter

I just had a look at your HJT log and with the exception of one minor entry, it is clean.

Please explain your problem better so that I can work on a plan of action.

Here's the fix for this one entry.

HijackThis is being run from a temporary folder; this means that any backups it creates as a result of fixes made with it will be lost. Please create a new folder for it and place the programme into that new folder.

Please open Spybot S & D, and turn off Resident Teatimer. Do this by clicking Mode at the top of the screen, choose Advanced Mode then Tools and then Resident and unchecking Teatimer. It will hinder our attempts to clear out some files that need to be removed.

Rescan with HijackThis. Close all programmes leaving only HijackThis running. Place a checkmark or tick against the following:

O16 - DPF: {DBA230D1-8467-4e69-987E-5FAE815A3B45} -

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Please download and run Silent Runners

* Please right click this link and choose save (link) as to download:Silent Runners.
* Save it to the desktop.

Dear Phil,

Thank you for your prompt reply to my dilemma and for providing a solution. I have deleted the checkmark #16 after running Hijaak:

The original problem I have is my initial home page opens up properly after clicking on the IE icon but within a few seconds the home page automatically redirects itself to a Yahoo sign-up account page without any reason. I presume this has something to do with a pop-up?

Another problem I have is multiple ad web pages appear after the computer boots. This happened afer the AIM or AOL instant messenger and Weather Bug were loaded into my computer. Any cure for this as well?

Hello again Peter

The Silent Runner log is negative, which doesn't tell us much more than we already knew.

The problem might be Spybot Tea Timer not allowing changes to be made. It's function is to lock-down your PC's registry and disallow changes to it.

Please uninstall Spybot from your PC.

Reboot normally.

Open IE and change your home page to whatever you want.

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to this entry listed below.

O2 - BHO: Yahoo! Companion BHO - {02478D38-C3F9-4efb-9B51-7695ECA05670} - C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\Companion\Installs\cpn\ycomp5_5_5_0.dll

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked.

Download:
Hoster

Please run Hoster (just double click it to open). Choose the Restore Original Hosts button and press OK.

Reboot normally.

Download
Spybot S&D

Re-install Spybot Tea Timer.

I have just been informed by a colleague that other sites are getting similar complaints to yours, so it may be a glitch with Yahoo

Dear Phil,

The Yahoo toolbar has been removed and all instructions followed. It seemed to have worked and the SpyBot did not turn up any problems. You may have solved it. Will keep you informed of my progress because I originally thought my computer was possessed. Thanks for all your help. Will write again after trying out the IE tomorrow. Any hints as to how I may prevent further problems? Thanks.

Congratulations! your new log is clean. :tazz: Just a little bit more to do to prevent further infection.

I recommend going to the following link and update as recommended by Microsoft. This adds more security and extra features including a pop-up blocker for Internet Explorer. Microsoft Update

Now that everything is fixed, I suggest that you consider getting these programmes to help keep the computer clean:

SPYWARE BLASTER - Blocks bad ActiveX items from installing on your computer.
AD-AWARE PERSONAL – A fine free malware detector and removal programme
SPYBOT S&D – Excellent free spyware detector and removal programme
GOOGLE TOOLBAR - Blocks many unwanted pop-ups in Internet Explorer.
FIREFOX - Safer alternative to the Internet Explorer web browser.
AVG ANTIVIRUS FREE EDITION - Free antivirus programme if you currently are not using one.
ZONEALARM - Free firewall programme if you currently are not using one (Windows XP has a built-in firewall).

Remember to update these frequently.

Please note that whilst there is nothing wrong in having more than one antispyware programmes for “on demand” scanning, having two or more antivirus systems is not recommended as they may well interfere with each other.

You may also want to read "How did I get infected in the first place" to learn how to better secure your computer.

Be sure to keep your Windows, antispyware and antivirus updated. :)
