I can't get Hijack This to run so I'm providing the following instead of a log.

I've been using Norton Security 2005, AdAware, SpywareGuard, SpywareBlaster and Spybot for some months with no problems.

I noticed yeserday that I couldn't acess my online banking site ("The page cannot be displayed"). Checked by phone with bank and their site is ok.

Decided to do a full scan on Norton and noticed that Norton wasn't starting up automatically but couldn't open the program 'manually' ("Symantec Integrator has encountered a problem and needs to close").

Checked Windows Security Center Firewall and got "Due to an unidentified problem, Windows can't display Windows Firewall settings".

Then tried Microsoft Update (Express and Custom) but was advised "The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page that you are trying to view".

I then tried to follow the procedure you recommend for new members.

CleanUp: ran successfully

Ad-aware SE (Personal): I've been running this a few times a day now for many months. I usually pick up a few things after the kids have been on (I use Norton Parental Control). I usually alternate between quick and full scans but reconfigured following your instructions and found nothing.

CWShredder: ran successfully

Spybot S&D: I have used this maybe 1-2 times a week for some months, usually after a full scan on Ad-aware. However, I downloaded (again) following your instructions and now canot update ("Socket Error # 10061. Connection refused") although program ran ok.

Ewido: ran successfully, found nothing (no report) but unable to update ("connection could not be established").

Trend Housecall: couldn't connect ("The page cannot be displayed")...same with Panda ActiveScan.

AVG: haven't used as I hoped I'd get Norton running again and wanted to avoid conflict.

TrojanHunter: ran successfully but unable to update.

Windows Update: see above

Hijack This: downloaded this twice...once under a new Hijack folder directly under C: and also a new Hijack folder directly under Program Files. Can't successfully open either...generally starts up then quickly closes...best I've down is to get the 'Do a system scan and save a logfile' started before it closes.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Gordon

Hi Tommy Walker

Please read through the instructions before you start (you may want to print this out).

Please set your system to show all files; please see here if you're unsure how to do this.

Please download and install AD-Aware se.
Click Here on how setup and use it - please make sure you update it first. Don't run yet.

Download Pocket Killbox and unzip it; save it to your Desktop. We may need it later.

Download Ewido Trojan’s and malware remover http://www.ewido.net/en/download/
This setup contains the free as well as the plus-version of the ewido security suite. After the installation, a free 14-day test version containing all the extensions of the plus-version will be activated. At the end of the test phase, the extensions of the plus version are deactivated and the freeware version can be used unlimited times. The purchased license code of the plus version can be entered at any time.
Ewido will auto-udate. Don't run yet

Reboot into Safe Mode: please see here if you are not sure how to do this.

Run Ewido full scan. Save the scan.log and post the log.

Clear out the files in the Prefetch folder. Go to start> run> type into the box Prefetch and delete all the files in that folder.

Run Ad-aware se let it remove all it finds

Clean out temporary and TIF files. Go to Start > Run and type in the box: cleanmgr. Let it scan your system for files to remove. Make sure all are checked and then press *ok* to remove:

Let the system reboot as normal.

Please download, install and run this disk cleanup utility called Cleanup version 4.0!: http://downloads.ste...p/CleanUp40.exe
It will get rid of any malware which may be hiding in your temp folders ( a common hiding place). You will also regain a massive amount of disk space. Here is a tutorial which describes its usage: http://www.bleepingc...tutorial93.html
Check the custom settings to your liking under options, but be sure to delete temporary files and temporary internet files for all user profiles. Also, cleanout the prefetch folder and the recycle bin. When the scan has finnished click the close button
When prompted the system will log off to let it clean out the remaining files. when the log screen shows log back on and continue the fix.

Please run the following free, online virus scans.
http://enterprises.p...l_companies.htm
Please post the log From Panda virus scan. We will need them to remove previous infections that have left files on your system.

Run HijackThis and post the new log.

Hi Tommy Walker

Please try this

There is a variant of the Coolwebsearch trojan spreading that closes several anti-spyware apps when you try to open them.
If this is happening to you, download PepiMK's CoolWWWSearch.SmartKiller removal tool first and run it. After it does its job, CWShredder and HijackThis will run properly (as well Spybot S&D, Ad-aware and several anti-spyware forums).

CoolWWWSearch.SmartKiller removal tool
http://www.safer-net...es/delcwssk.zip

Now try and post a HJT.log.

It's 4.30 in the morning, I just got up with a bad cold and I'm not functioning very well so please excuse me if I'm doing something very basic/simple wrong.

I've unzipped the file using WinZip but when I try to open it I get 'CoolWWWSearch.SmartKiller (v1/v2) has not been found on your system'.

FYI when I last ran Spybot (during the scan) it comes up with 'There were problems with the include file C: Progam Files \ Spybot-Search_Destroy \ Includes \ Hijackers.sbi'...after hitting 'OK' it then continued the run and found nothing.

Please go offline, close all browsers and any open Windows, making sure that only HijackThis is open. Scan and when it finishes, put an check in the boxes, only next to these following items:
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapp...rch/search.html
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapp...rch/search.html
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://red.clientapp...//www.yahoo.com
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [boltzap] C:\Program Files\bolt\boltzap\BoltZap.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [D2C] C:\Documents and Settings\Gordon\Desktop\TFE-Trading-Messenger.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [svshost] C:\WINDOWS\system32\ninnlkhp\svshost.exe
O16 - DPF: {03F998B2-0E00-11D3-A498-00104B6EB52E} (MetaStreamCtl Class) - https://components.v...nt.asp?model=15

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Run Ad-aware se let it remove all it finds

Clean out temporary and TIF files. Go to Start > Run and type in the box: cleanmgr. Let it scan your system for files to remove. Make sure all are checked and then press *ok* to remove:

Run killbox and click the radio button that says Delete a file on reboot. For each of the files you could not delete, paste them one at a time into the full path of file to delete box and click the red circle with a white cross in it.
The program will ask you if you want to reboot; say No each time until the last one has been pasted in whereupon you should answer (Yes.)

C:\WINDOWS\BROWSERXTRAS\PN\remove.exe
C:\WINDOWS\smdat32m.sys
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ninnlkhp\svshost.exe
