Hey guys,

I keep getting a winfixer 2005 popup and a couple of other (possibly related) popups. They only occur ever so often but they are really bugging me as i can normally get rid of them!

The pop up keeps trying to get me to install some activex controls but obviously i'm doing my best to try and stop it!

Firslty, i've tried removing anything 'dodgy' from my start up list using msconfig, i've also use symantecs online virus sweep, spy sweeper, ad ware SE personal, spybot search and destroy and bazooka! None of these have managed to stop these problems!

Well, i'd really appreciated any feed back, i'm at work all day today, but will be online from this time tomorrow till the evening so if anyone could help let me know! I'm really struggling with this little blighter!

Many Thanks
Tesfurdo

Please Click here!, and follow the recommendations in the guide.

If you're still having trouble, We'll need you to use a free diagnostic tool, Hijack This. Follow the instructions in step five of this guide, and reply here with your log.

Most of what Hijack This lists lists will be harmless or even essential, DO NOT delete or modify anything yet! Someone will be along to tell you what steps to take after you post the contents of the scan results.

Hi tesfurdo

Please read through the instructions before you start (you may want to print this out).

Please set your system to show all files; please see here if you're unsure how to do this.

Please download and install AD-Aware se.
Click Here on how setup and use it - please make sure you update it first. Don't run yet.

Download Pocket Killbox and unzip it; save it to your Desktop. We may need it later.

Download Ewido Trojan’s and malware remover http://www.ewido.net/en/download/
This setup contains the free as well as the plus-version of the ewido security suite. After the installation, a free 14-day test version containing all the extensions of the plus-version will be activated. At the end of the test phase, the extensions of the plus version are deactivated and the freeware version can be used unlimited times. The purchased license code of the plus version can be entered at any time.
Ewido will auto-udate. Don't run yet

Reboot into Safe Mode: please see here if you are not sure how to do this.

Run Ewido full scan. Save the scan.log and post the log.

Clear out the files in the Prefetch folder. Go to start> run> type into the box Prefetch and delete all the files in that folder.

Please go offline, close all browsers and any open Windows, making sure that only HijackThis is open. Scan and when it finishes, put an check in the boxes, only next to these following items:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Uninstall_TBPS] C:\WINDOWS\Temp\TBuninst.exe /remove
O20 - Winlogon Notify: vtuts - C:\WINDOWS\system32\vtuts.dll

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Run Ad-aware se let it remove all it finds

Clean out temporary and TIF files. Go to Start > Run and type in the box: cleanmgr. Let it scan your system for files to remove. Make sure all are checked and then press *ok* to remove:

Run killbox and click the radio button that says Delete a file on reboot. For each of the files you could not delete, paste them one at a time into the full path of file to delete box and click the red circle with a white cross in it.
The program will ask you if you want to reboot; say No each time until the last one has been pasted in whereupon you should answer (Yes.)
C:\WINDOWS\Temp\TBuninst.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\vtuts.dll

Let the system reboot as normal.

Please download, install and run this disk cleanup utility called Cleanup version 4.0!: http://downloads.ste...p/CleanUp40.exe
It will get rid of any malware which may be hiding in your temp folders ( a common hiding place). You will also regain a massive amount of disk space. Here is a tutorial which describes its usage: http://www.bleepingc...tutorial93.html
Check the custom settings to your liking under options, but be sure to delete temporary files and temporary internet files for all user profiles. Also, cleanout the prefetch folder and the recycle bin. When the scan has finnished click the close button
When prompted the system will log off to let it clean out the remaining files. when the log screen shows log back on and continue the fix.

Please run the following free, online virus scans.
http://enterprises.p...l_companies.htm
Please post the log From Panda virus scan. We will need them to remove previous infections that have left files on your system.

Run HijackThis and post the new log.

I followed your instructions to the letter but some things poped up that i didnt expect!

Firstly when trying to restart after using kill box a message poped up from that prog saying "regisrtydata has been removed by external process" the only option was clicking "OK" so i did and i think i had to restart the comp myself!

Hope this info helps? Oh and since ive performed these actions, i'm still getting popups!

Many thanks

Hi tesfurdo

Please read through the instructions before you start (you may want to print this out).

Please set your system to show all files; please see here if you're unsure how to do this.

Please download LSPfix and save it to the Desktop and unzip it.

Run LSPfix and place a check against the I know what I am doing checkbox.
Highlight every instance of the following names and move them from the Keep to the Remove panel. Be sure to move nothing other than the files listed below!
xfire_lsp_10650.dll
When done, click on Finish to exit the program; do not use the X in the top right-hand corner as nothing will happen!

Download Pocket Killbox and unzip it; save it to your Desktop.

Reboot into Safe Mode: please see here if you are not sure how to do this.

Please go offline, close all browsers and any open Windows, making sure that only HijackThis is open. Scan and when it finishes, put an X in the boxes, only next to these following items:
O2 - BHO: MSEvents Object - {827DC836-DD9F-4A68-A602-5812EB50A834} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\vtuts.dll
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [PtiuPbmd] Rundll32.exe ptipbm.dll,SetWriteBack
O20 - Winlogon Notify: vtuts - C:\WINDOWS\system32\vtuts.dll

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders, and delete them:
ptipbm.dll<--Delete this file
C:\WINDOWS\browserxtras<--Delete the whole folder
Exit Explorer.Reboot as normal.

Run killbox and click the radio button that says Delete a file on reboot. For each of the files you could not delete, paste them one at a time into the full path of file to delete box and click the red circle with a white cross in it.
The program will ask you if you want to reboot; say No each time until the last one has been pasted in whereupon you should answer Yes.
C:\WINDOWS\system32\vtuts.dll
C:\WINDOWS\smdat32m.sys
C:\WINDOWS\stalker.scr
C:\WINDOWS\system32\vtuts.dll

Let the system reboot.

Please run the following free, online virus scans.
http://enterprises.p...l_companies.htm
Please post the log From Panda virus scan. We will need them to remove previous infections that have left files on your system.

Run HijackThis and post the new log.

Hey,

Once again many thanks for taking the time to help me, before i go ahead with the above steps, I was wondering if i could
1. use a second hard drive
2. set it up as master
3. install XP on it (It's never even been pluged in so is free of virus etc. - forgot i had it and found it yesturday!!!)
4. Install my old HD as slave and get all my MP3 files and digital pictures from my old HD
5. then format that drive and use it as storage?

I know all this is actually possible, but is it likely that the problems i am having would just transfer themselfs to my new HD - leaving me back at square one?

And if i do what i suggested, is there anything you would advise me not to copy across or any folders to avoid going in - to prevent the virus/malware/spyware being activated again?
