Please Click here!, and follow the recommendations in the guide.

If you're still having trouble, We'll need you to use a free diagnostic tool, Hijack This. Follow the instructions in step five of this guide, and reply here with your log.

Most of what Hijack This lists lists will be harmless or even essential, DO NOT delete or modify anything yet! Someone will be along to tell you what steps to take after you post the contents of the scan results.

Thanks for gettting back to me...I guess my first issue is trying to download Hijack and other tools to a system that cannot access the internet...I tried to use a memory stick but the system wouldn't recognize it...It saw the drive, but didn't show the files...What's the best way to download tools in my situation?

HijackThis, in particular, is only a 200K file so an average old 3.5" floppy disk should work wonderfully.

The other tools will be a bit harder, but we'll work that out.

Alright, first things first let’s try a step to figure out it we can get the internet connection back up and running so the rest of these fixes can be done locally. You’ll have to move the downloaded program over manually again, though.

Regardless, you're quite heavily infected so this will definitely NOT be a 1 step process. This is only the beginning.

A malicious .DLL file is disrupting the LSP chain on your computer. We need to get rid of it.
  • Please download LSPFix from here.
  • Run the LSPFix.exe that you have just finished downloading.
  • Check the I know what I'm doing box.
  • In the Keep box you should see one or more instances of winlspak.dll.
  • Select every instance of winlspak.dll and move each one to the Remove box by clicking the >> button.
  • When you are done click Finish>>.
Hopefully, the rest can be done on the local machine.

Reboot then continue on with the instructions

You have a CoolWebSearch infection. First we will need to download a few tools that will help us in the removal of your problem.

Download about:buster by RubbeRDuckY Here.
Download CWShredder Here.
Download and install CleanUp! Here

Save all of these files somewhere you will remember like to the Desktop.

Update About:Buster
  • Unzip the contents of AboutBuster.zip and an AboutBuster directory will be created.
  • Navigate to the AboutBuster directory and double-click on AboutBuster.exe.
  • Click "OK" at the prompt with instructions.
  • Click "Update" and then "Check For Update" to begin the update process.
  • If any updates exist please download them by clicking "Download Update" then click the X to close that window.
  • Now close About:Buster
Update CWShredder
  • Open CWShredder and click I AGREE
  • Click Check For Update
  • Close CWShredder
Boot into Safe Mode:
Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Please run about:buster by RubbeRDuckY:
  • Click Start and then OK to allow AboutBuster to scan for Alternate Data Streams.
  • Click Yes to allow it to shutdown explorer.exe.
  • It will begin to check your computer for malicious files. If it asks if you would like to do a second pass, allow it to do so.
  • When it has finished, click Save Log. Make sure you save it as I may need a copy of it later.
  • Reboot your computer into safe mode again
Run about:buster again following the same instructions as above, this time without the restart at the end

Now run CWShredder. Click I Agree, then Fix and then Next, let it fix everything it asks about.

Now run CleanUp!Reboot your computer into normal windows.

Please download ewido security suite it is a free version of the program.
  • Install ewido security suite
  • When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck..
    • Install background guard
    • Install scan via context menu
  • Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop, double-click it.
  • The program will now open to the main screen.
  • When you run ewido for the first time, you may get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
  • You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
    • On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
    • Then click on Start Update.
  • The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
(the status bar at the bottom will display ("Update successful")
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update ewido.
ewido manual updates

Once the updates are installed do the following:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • You will be prompted to clean the first infection.
  • Select "Perform action on all infections", then proceed.
  • Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
  • Click Save report.
  • Save the report .txt file to your desktop or a location where you can find it easily.
Close ewido security suite.

Please run an on-line virus scan at Kaspersky OnLine Scan or if that doesnt work, you can use TrendMicro or BitDefender. (Please post the results of the scan(s) in your next reply)

After all that, please post back with how things went as well as the logs requested and a new HiJackThis log.

Thanks...I ran Cleanup and Winsock before your reply...

I ran LSPfix and did not get a winlspak.dll file.

I did get the following:

mswsock.dll
winrnr.dll
nwprovau.dll
rsvpsp.dll

I'll stand by for further instructions.

(Also, I ran Cleanup on another of my computers and I seem to lost some screen formatting...For example, this site comes up with words only, no sections, etc....)

Hmm... the programs we use are rather large. If the flashdrive isn't working and I can't get the computer on the internet, is it possible to burn a CD or something similar?

It appears that you have Norton. If you downloaded the newest virus definitions from Symantec.com and move them over it could help us out.

Let me know what we can get working.

Do you have any idea why the flash drive isn't working? I can see the drive, but no files are showing...

I thought I had internet access at one point which would've enabled me to get some downloads, but the connection never was made.

I'll try to work on getting Norton updated and uploaded.

Thanks for your help.

To be honest, no I don't. I tried Google to see if I could find similar issues, but since portable USB drives have sooo many monikers (flash, pen, etc.) I couldn't really find anything helpful.

What I'm going to do is give you instructions that only include programs 1.44mb or below so we can transfer everything by floppy. Maybe we can force your internet connection back somehow. Keep in mind that this is by no means the most ideal way to do this, but we've got what we've got.

Download smitRem.exe and save the file to your desktop.
Double click on the file to extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.
Download about:buster by RubbeRDuckY Here.
Download CWShredder Here.

*** This next section may not work because of your internet access. Try it anyways. If it fails, just skip past the sections updating About:Buster and CWShredder***

Next, please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
Now scan with HJT and place a checkmark next to each of the following items, then click FIX CHECKED:

Close HiJackThis.

Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply (so, HijackThis, About:Buster, SmitRem).

Also, if you can run an updated Symantec/Norton scan, do it now.

The mouse doesn't work? Can you try another mouse? Or alternatively, if you have a USB mouse can you try a PS2?
