I have to apologise again... spent the day scrounging gas to get work done. Katrina's evil effects.

I ran the VX2 function, but I have tried Adaware several times and it hangs for some unknown reason during deep scans. It did not do this before. After several attempts, I will I guess I will have to uninstall and try loading it again. Sorry for the delay.

No problem, you can also do the scans with SpyBot after running VX2 cleaner if you have it installed. It doesn't HAVE to be Ad-aware, though I would prefer to it. :tazz:

Ok.. I had some problems with Adaware... for some reason it wasn't able to complete a full scan. after several attempts and after rebooting it still didn't work. I was able to run the VX2 scans and eliminated a few files. Today I tried again and apparently after doing the usual update it was able to finish a full scan. I repeated several times and ran several other checks and scans as well and they all came back clean... the most difficult file to finally get to was C:\WINDOWS\cyqnecs.exe apparently a major player in keeping the Trojan fun going. When I go to IE to come here I still get a warning for a loader (/Avenue A, Inc. ?) popping up that is intercepted by Spybot. It appears to block it.

I rebooted ran Ad Aware and VX2 cleaner per your instructions and here is what I got:

Hello!

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner

Next Click on Launch Kaspersky Anti-Virus Web Scanner

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.

The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
Now click on Scan Settings
In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
- Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
Standard
- Scan Options:
Scan Archives
Scan Mail Bases
Click OK
Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer
This program will start to scan your system.
The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
- Now click on the Save as Text button:
Save the file to your desktop.
Copy and paste that information in your next post.

Hi as you can see I discovered a collection of files that were infected and dispensed of them - but I failed to empty the trash before running the scan (Doh!). I have since emptied the recycle bin. I also included a HJT file.

I am still seeing some pop-up activity but aurora seems to be gone. also Spy bot continues to block "Avenue A,Inc" whatever that is.

Ok, I think we need to try something different.

Please download Silent Runners.
Save it to the desktop.
Run Silent Runner's by doubleclicking the "Silent Runners" icon on your desktop.
You will see a text file appear on the desktop - it's not done yet, just let it run (it won't appear to be doing anything!)
Once you receive the prompt "All Done!", double-click on the new text file on the desktop and copy that entire log and paste it here.
Note;If you receive any warning message about scripts, please choose to allow the script to run.
For some time it will look like nothing is happening. Just keep waiting.
Once it's done it will create a log. A window will come up telling you when it's saved. Please post that log here

I still have pop-ups that begin immediately upon opening the net. I seem to have shaken Aurora finally but these pop-ups are occuring inspite of two pop-blockers I have running and seem to be generated by something other then web pages. They are contextual so they must be tied to some form of spyware. Overall, the system overall is 1000 percent better.

Download cureit;

Run drweb - cureit
Double-click the "drweb-cureit.exe" and click "ok" in the prompt window that will open, asking "start the express scan now".
It will first make a quick scan of your system, let it clean what it finds, and when it says "done" in the lower left corner click on all your drive's.
A red dot will mark the selected drive(s) . Then hit the pedestrian who now has turned green.
Click on the green man in the right corner, it will scan ALL your drive's, hit yes to all.

Reboot.

Post a fresh HiJackThis log once finished.

OK I found a few more vestiges of spyware - 5 more instances but they showed up in backups and zips etc. They were all deleted. I think we are getting close to the finsihline... at the moment i have seen no pop-ups or at least none that aren't being handled by the pop-up blockers I have.

When we get done... if you could please recommend what security I should leave in place on the system, I have so many resident loads now i think I am eating some precious memory. I expect to keep AVG, Norton and Adaware... what of the rest of the stuff you see through my HJT file should I keep that will complement it?

Run a scan with HiJackThis and check the following objects for removal:

Then close ALL open windows except for HiJackThis and hit FIX CHECKED.

Reboot. NOW, you have two anti-virus programs running. PLEASE only keep one of them. In my opinion, I would suggest you to get rid of Norton completely, and leave AVG in place. It's your call though.

You can uninstall:

Trojan Remover
SpySweeper
Ewido

Oh yea.. Then there's one more "bad" entry in your log (unless you installed it yourself):

Viewpoint Manager.

Uninstall the program and delete the folder, then empty recycle bin.

What you SHOULD keep, Ad-Aware, AVG, SpyBot. Post a fresh log. :tazz:

Rawe,

Thank you so much... I have removed the three programs + Viewpoint. May have to hold off on Norton - It is part of Systemworks suite and it isn't my computer so I have to ask the owner on that one. So I can explain it - what is the issue? Interference between the two checkers?I'll look into disabling the Norton Antivirus part. Is it OK to keep it but use it only on demand - are there elements in it which interfere with the other programs? Is it possible to keep it on the system, disabling potentially interfering functions like AutoProtect or does it need to be uninstalled? Sorry for all the questions - just anticipating dear old Dad's issues.

It's quite ok to keep two anti-virus programs if you keep the second one on-demand, and the other one would be an active guard. I would suggest disabling Norton AV, and keeping AVG active..

Your logfile is clean

Here's some tips for future to prevent spyware;

Detect and Remove Programs:

How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.

Prevention Programs:

Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed. (My favourite)
Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.

Other necessary Programs:

AntiVirus Program <= An AntiVirus program is a must! Whether it is a free version like AVG or Anti-Vir, or a shareware version like Norton or Kaspersky, this is a must have.
Firewall <= A firewall is definatley a must have. Two good free versions are Sygate and ZoneLabs.
More Secure Browser <= Internet Explorer is not the most secure and best browser. There are safer and better alternatives available. I recommend Firefox.

Thanks again... FYI... I downloaded MS Antispyware and lo and behold I came up with evidence of 3 more Adware malware files... But yeah, I'm prety clean now and I am very appreciative- thanks for hanging in over the difference in time zones, etc.

I will certainly look at helping others as one of your links suggests as soon as my Geekitude is of sufficient level. Thanks again, Rawe.
