We can definitely help you, but first you need to help us. The first step in this process is to apply Service Pack 1a for Windows XP. Without this update, you're wide open to re-infection, and we're both just wasting our time.
Apply the update, reboot, and post a fresh Hijack This log.

Please print out these instructions or copy them into a text file on your Desktop for easy access.

During the fix, u will be asked to fix some entries, delete some files or uninstall some programs. If in case, you do not see those entries / files / programs, please make a note of it. Continue with the fix and in your next post please inform me of all deviations from the fix prescribed.

1. Download Programs

Please download these programs and save them in a new folder on your desktop -

CleanUp

2. Run Hijack This

Run Hijack This and click on scan. The following items need to be fixed -

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
O2 - BHO: Class - {20881ADC-7FCB-1C96-735F-EB9B62875CFC} - C:\WINDOWS\mfchk.dll
O2 - BHO: System Process - {C2EEB4FA-B6D6-41b9-9CFA-ABA87F862BCB} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\navshext.dll
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [mfcwe32.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\mfcwe32.exe
O16 - DPF: {33331111-1111-1111-1111-622221193458} - file://c:\ex.cab
O16 - DPF: {64311111-1111-1121-1111-111191113457} - file://c:\eied_s7.cab

Close all windows other than Hijack This. Check the boxes next to above items and click on Fix checked.

3. Delete Rogue files

Click on Start ---> Run. Type Services.msc and hit enter. Locate the item - Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Helper . Right click on it and then click on properties. In the Startup Type choose the option Disable. Close the window.

Restart the PC in Safe Mode (repeatedly tap the F8 key when the PC is starting up).

Run CleanUp and delete all temp files including temporary internet files

Open Windows Explorer (right click on Start and then click on explore). Locate and delete the following folders and files -

Files
C:\WINDOWS\javadv.exe
C:\WINDOWS\mfchk.dll
C:\WINDOWS\System32\navshext.dll
c:\eied_s7.cab
c:\ex.cab

Clear out the files in the Prefetch folder. Go to start> run> type into the box Prefetch. It will open the folder Prefetch. Delete all the files in that folder. Dont delete the folder, only the files in it !!!!!!!!

Reboot the PC in Normal Mode.

Please visit Panda and do an online scan. Save the scan report.

Run Hijack This and post a fresh HJT log along with Panda scan report.

Download smitRem.exe and save the file to your desktop.
Double click on the file to extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

Please read Ewido Setup Instructions
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

Next, please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

Run Ewido:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.
  • You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
  • If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
  • DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
  • If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
  • Save the report to your desktop
Close Ewido

Next go to Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Web > Uncheck "Security Info" if present.

Reboot back into Normal Mode.

Post a fresh HJT log along with the Ewido scan report and the contents of the smitfiles.txt log by using Add Reply.

Hello again tampabelle.... :tazz:

Followed all your instructions as you described and posted the log below of the HJT log below. The Ewido didnt pick up any infections and although the scan report was saved to the desk top in safe mode once the PC had been rebooted in normal mode it didnt show on there and wasnt found after a search. The smitfiles.txt log appears to be of one done yesterday but likewise the latest scan was done in safe mode and seems not to have saved the latest log on the c drive i thought it best to send u what i had rather than nothing at all.

Hi Tampabelle, well all seems to be well from what i can see. Xsoftspy and spybot has since been ran and all evidence of psguard seems to have disappeared. Unless anything happens within the week i'll leave you in peace and just contact you one more time next week to confirm that this continues to be the case.

Thank you sooooooooo much for your help/advice and support i'll definately be recommending this site to others. :tazz:

Let us clean up your PC a little bit.

Delete the following programs and the associated folders, which you downloaded during the cleaning up process -

smitrem.exe
smitrem folder

Uninstall Ewido as it is a trial product and the trial period will expire shortly. Conflicts can arise between multiple anti-virus programs and can severely hamper the performance of the PC.

Run Hijack This and click on scan. The following items need to be fixed -

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MsnMsgr] "C:\Program Files\MSN Messenger\MsnMsgr.Exe" /background

Close all windows other than Hijack This. Check the boxes next to above items and click on Fix checked.

This will not delete the programs from your PC. This will only disable the programs from running at Start up and result in a faster PC. You can always run the programs manually by using the respective exe files or the shortcuts. If you use this program first thing after startup, then you can leave it.

After this, please visit Windows security and critical updates and get all the updates and patches and install them on your PC.

Reboot the PC and post a fresh HJT log.
