I spent quite a bit of time battling Aurora and WinFixer 2005 over the last couple days. Got rid of almost everything, but SurfSideKick keeps reappearing. Attached is my latest HJT scan results. Ewido has been blocking, but my last scan was clean.... I think I need a pro to look this over and direct me.

Thanks

Glenn

Download L2mfix from one of these two locations:

http://www.atribune....oads/l2mfix.exe
http://www.downloads....org/l2mfix.exe

Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe. Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop. Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing enter. This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it into this thread.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

Please print out these instructions or copy them into a text file on your Desktop for easy access.

During the fix, u will be asked to fix some entries, delete some files or uninstall some programs. If in case, you do not see those entries / files / programs, please make a note of it. Continue with the fix and in your next post please inform me of all deviations from the fix prescribed.

Well, that was only about 1/2 successful......

Ran into trouble once I got to the file deletion part. These were not able to be found in the directories listed.

Files
C:\WINNT\system32\PSof1.exe
C:\WINNT\system32\exp.exe
C:\WINNT\system32\wintask.exe
C:\WINNT\system32\lanbrup.exe
C:\WINNT\VCMnet11.exe
C:\WINNT\dinst.exe

The Prefetch command did not work. Told me that it couldn't find Prefetch.

Clear out the files in the Prefetch folder. Go to start> run> type into the box Prefetch.
It will open the folder Prefetch. Delete all the files in that folder.
Dont delete the folder, only the files in it !!!!!!!!

Reboot the PC in Normal Mode.

The online scan referenced below ran, but ended up rebooting the PC, no log file was saved.....

I can rescan tomorrow morning, but am giving up for today.

Here is my current HJT. As you can see, SurfSideKick is back....

Well, I'm a little more awake now. I realized I had not emptied the Recycle Bin before rebooting. So, I went back and repeated the steps above, only making sure I emptied the recycle bin before rebooting. I also noticed "Funcade" and "Bullseye Network" in my Program Files folder. So I unistalled both of those.

It also appeared that there was a spam mailing program in a folder called Adaurity. The main application was named chakager, and it appeared to generate mailing scripts with spam inside. It wasn't installed as a program, it didn't appear on the HJT list, but it was already quite active this morning. So, being agravated, :tazz: I blew it away......

I emptied the Recycle Bin, double checked HJT and then rebooted. Here is my latest HJT log. I will try to rerun Panda later this morning.

Will let you know how that works out.

:)

That went rather well. The only file that I could not delete is:

C:\WINNT\system32\wisnn11n.exe

I ran a system Search, and it could not locate the file. Other than that, they are all toast. System seems to be running normally now, no Aroura, no WinFixer2005 and NO SurfSidekick3 :tazz:

HJT looks clean to me, but you be the judge of that......

Let me know if there is anything else I need to do besides install Spyware Blaster, SpywareGuard and IE-SPYAD.

Many Thanks!

HJT follows:

Hi Glenn,

CONGRATULATIONS !!!!!!!!!!! Your PC is clean now :tazz:

I would recommend the following steps to keep your PC clean –

PREVENTIVE MEASURES FOR FUTURE

Operating System
1. Keep the Windows and Internet Explorer updated with the latest fixes. These fixes are available free from Microsoft. Click on Tools in the IE menu bar and then on Windows update. You can also use the following links

Windows security and critical updates
Internet Explorer security and critical updates

Also ensure that automatic updates are enabled for faster updation of the system.
(Right click on My Computer on your desktop, properties and Automatic Updates tab.

Anti-Virus Software
2. Keep your Anti-virus program updated with the latest definitions. Some of the common anti-virus programs in use are :

Norton Anti-Virus
McAfee Anti-Virus
AVG Anti-Virus --- freeware
Avast Home Edition --- freeware

Use only one anti-virus program as multiple such programs can create conflicts between themselves and severely hamper the performance of your PC.

Firewall
3. You should also have a good firewall. Here are 3 free ones available for personal use:
Sygate Personal Firewall, Kerio Personal Firewall, ZoneAlarm

Internet Browsers
4. Have robust explorer settings. It is preferable to use an internet browser other that IE as most of the malware is targetted at IE. In case you prefer to use IE, then download a list of innocent looking but harmful websites from IE-Spyad and install it on ur PC. IE-SPYAD puts over 5000 sites in your internet explorer's restricted zone, so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't really innocent at all.

Some alternate browsers I suggest are Firefox Mozilla Browser and Opera

Ensure that Security level, irrespective of whichever browser you use, is set at Medium or higher, restrict the usage of cookies and activeX components.

Spyware Protection
5. Have a wall of protection against spyware / adware by installing SpywareBlaster and SpywareGuard.

SpywareBlaster and SpywareGuard are by JavaCool and both are free programs.
SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed and consumes no system resources.
SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation and browser hijack attempts. Both have free ongoing updates.

Spyware Removers
6. Install programs for scanning for malware and uninstalling them. Two of the best programs, both are freeware, are :

Spybot Search & Destroy - A powerful tool which can search and annhilate nasties that make it onto your system. Now with an Immunize section that will help prevent future infections.

AdAware SE Personal Edition - Another very powerful tool which searches and kills nasties that infect your system. AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy compliment each other very well.

Regular Maintenance of PC
7. Finally, invest some time for regular maintenance of your PC. Delete the temporary Internet files, temporary files, cookies etc. Click on Start button, Programs, Accessories, System Tools and run the program Disk Cleanup. Follow the instructions.

An alternate freeware software which can be used is CleanUp.

Keep your Registry clean. My favourite software is Registry First Aid. This is not a freeware but a trial version can be downloaded.

Go ahead and enjoy a clean PC !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for all your help!

I keep my Windows Operating System and IE up to date by using Automatic updates. I currently have Symantec Anti-virus which is also on a LiveUpdate schedule. I will be installing ZoneAlarm firewall. I wanted to clean the machine first.

Since I use this machine to work from home on, I must continue to use Internet Explorer. However, I have set my Internet options to control the use of ActiveX components and cookies. I have set my Security level in IE to Medium or higher. I will be installing IE-SPYAD, as well as SpywareBlaster and SpywareGuard.

I already have Spybot Search & Destroy and AdAware SE Personal Edition.

I have obtained CleanUp and will be using it regularly.

I hesitate to muck about with the Registry, but will keep an eye on it going forward.

Again, thanks so much for your help. This site is about the best resource I have ever come across. Keep up the great job!
