Hello!

MS Antispyware alerted me that I've got a Trojan Downloader BHO thing going, and even though it says it removes it, it always comes back. I've tried lots of stuff. Booted into safe mode took off system restore and ran the MS Antispyware remover again... no luck. Downloaded and tried all the stuff GeeksToGo recommends... and while those programs found (and hopefully removed) some *other* stuff, this one sucker won't go away. It seems to always be back. It appears to be connected to this line:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {8E13DDE1-E013-47ec-9C4C-27C2F78BDD26} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\gebcd.dll

Anyway. Full HJT logfile below. Any help would be *tremendous*.

Thanks in advance!

Hey Sam,

Nothing much has changed. I tried downloading Spyware Doctor as another attempt to figure this one out, but it didn't help much either. I've now got a ton of anti-spyware stuff on here, and none of it finds the same issue that MS Antispyware finds... but I still see that gebcd.dll that MS says is a problem. Is it wrong?

Anyway, latest HJT log posted below...

Thanks.

First you will need to disable the real time protection of some of those anti-spyware programs. They can actually interfer with the fix by hijackthis.

Please disable:

Spybot Teatimer
Counterspy
Microsoft Antispyware

Please make sure that you can VIEW ALL HIDDEN FILES.

Run Hijackthis again, click scan, and Put a checkmark next to each of these. Then close all other windows--you should only see HijackThis on your Desktop--and click the Fix Checked button.

Please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
* if you have trouble getting into Safe mode go here for more info.

Once in Safe mode, delete this file:

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\gebcd.dll

Reboot your computer to go back to normal mode and post a new log.

Nope. That didn't work. I did the first part, but when I booted into safe mode and tried to delete gebcd.dll it told me it couldn't be deleted because it was in use.

Download KillBox and unzip it to your desktop.

Open Killbox and select the Delete on reboot option.
Copy and paste the following file to the field labeled "Full path of file to delete"

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\gebcd.dll

Press the Delete button (the button that looks like a red circle with a white X in it).
A first dialog box will ask if you want to delete the file on reboot, press the YES button.
A second dialog box will ask you if you want to REBOOT now. Press the YES button.

Your computer will reboot.

Please post a new hijackthis log.

Hi Sam,

No such luck again.

I did the same thing again, used HJT to clear stuff out, went into safe mode, used Killbox to get rid of gebcd.dll and when I hit the button to delete on reboot I got the following error message:

----

PendingFileRenameOperations Registry Data has been Removed by External Process!

----

My only choice was to click OK, and so it didn't seem to kill the file. I rebooted anyway, but it's still there. My latest HJT logfile is below. Btw, any idea what this thing is?

Let's try something else.

Please download VundoFix.zip to your desktop.
  • Double-click VundoFix.zip and extract it to your C:\ directory.
  • Copy the instructions below and paste them into Notepad for reference.
    • All other windows need to be closed while doing this fix!
  • Navigate to the new folder C:\VundoFix
  • Double click on KillVundo.bat
    • When it starts running it will tell you that you need an active internet connection then ask you to press any key once you do.
  • Please press any key to continue.
  • Wait for HiJackThis to open.
  • When HiJackThis opens, click Do a system scan only. Place a check next to the following items, if found:

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {8E13DDE1-E013-47ec-9C4C-27C2F78BDD26} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\gebcd.dll
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: gebcd - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\gebcd.dll

  • Once they all have a check next to them, click the FIX CHECKED button, then close HiJackThis.
You will once again be prompted to press any key. Upon doing so this time you will receive a "Blue Screen Of Death". Don't worry, this is normal! Let the computer reboot. If it doesn't boot straight to windows, manually turn the computer off and then back on.

Once the computer is rebooted post a new HiJackThis log as well as the contents of vundofix.txt which can be found in this folder: C:\VundoFix

Hallelujah! I think we got it... :tazz: Nice work!

Here's the vundofix text and the HJT log.

Any idea how I got this in the first place? I'm pretty careful about all this and have plenty of protective measures in place. Trying to avoid having this happen again...

Oh wait... maybe not. There's still this:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {8E13DDE1-E013-47ec-9C4C-27C2F78BDD26} - (no file)

which MS Antispyware still identifies as the same problem...

You'll need to disable Spybot's Teatimer function.
http://russelltexas....re/teatimer.htm

It should go easily now. Close all other programs other than Hijackthis and fix this line.

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {8E13DDE1-E013-47ec-9C4C-27C2F78BDD26} - (no file)

Reboot and post a new hijackthis log. How are things running on your end?

Not that easily... Did all of that, and the sucker is still there in the HJT log.

This happens sometimes. Let's delete it manually.

Download and install Registrar Lite version 2.00
  • Double click the purple Registrar Lite icon on your desktop.
  • Copy the line below and paste it into the "Address" field (located at the top) of the program:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects

  • Click the "Go" button.
  • On the right-hand side it will load all of your BHOs (you'll just see a bunch of numbers)
  • Locate the following entry:
    • 8E13DDE1-E013-47ec-9C4C-27C2F78BDD26
  • Right click on it and select Properties
  • Click the Permissions Button and a new window will open.
  • Click the Advanced button
  • Place a checkmark next to the following:
'Inherit from parent the permission entries that apply to child objects...'
  • Click OK, Ok again and rightclick this entry:
    8E13DDE1-E013-47ec-9C4C-27C2F78BDD26
  • Choose delete.
  • Exit Registrar Lite.
Restart your computer and post a new HiJackThis log.

Nope. It's still there.... There was already a check mark next to "'Inherit from parent the permission entries that apply to child objects...'" so I didn't actually change anything there. But I rebooted and that entry is still there.

Run Registry Lite again and do a search for this:
