Today I got a flurry of alerts from Norton and Microsoft Antispyware. I ran Norton and came up with a few Aurora things that it did not delete (said "at risk"), and Ewido came up with a whopping 43 things, which it said it cleaned but things keep popping up. Microsoft Antispyware came up with a bunch of entries for SurfsideKick, and various other things I do not know about. Any help in cleaning this up would be much appreciated. Thanks for the hard work! Here is an Ewido report and a HiJack This log:

Not a problem at all. I have been running scans since then (Ad-Aware, Ewido, Microsoft Antispyware, Spybot) and almost without exception have been coming up with stuff. So I think I do still need some help. I will post a fresh HiJack This log tonight. Thanks for your help.

Great, thank you so much for your help. Before I post the logs, I should say that I have been running scans, both in normal and safe mode, diligently since I posted in the hopes that I could get rid of at least some of this stuff. I know, however, that some stuff remains. A lot of the scans are picking up this ABetterInternet (Aurora) thing, and Ewido picks up Trojan.Agent.cp every time. Also, whenever I turn the computer off, I get a box that says "XACRSM.EXE Application failed to initialize because the windows station is shutting down." Also, in safe mode, I attempted to delete "Nail.exe," but it just appears a second later.

Lastly, for my own piece of mind, these logs do not contain anything that would be beneficial to those who wish to do my computer harm, do they? Thanks again for the help, I truly appreciate it.

I'm sorry, I forgot to add something. SurfSideKick kept appearing, especially on Ewido, despite it saying that it was "cleaned up." I finally went to Add/Remove Programs while in Safe Mode and, when I tried to remove it, a box popped up saying to enter a code (that was given) and it would be removed. I did so, and have not heard from it since. Is it really gone taking that simple of a step?!

We have a few infections on your PC. Lets get them one by one.

You have a CoolWebSearch infection. First we will need to download a few tools that will help us in the removal of your problem.

Download about:buster by RubbeRDuckY Here.
Download CWShredder Here.
Download and install CleanUp! Here

Save all of these files somewhere you will remember like to the Desktop.

Update About:Buster
  • Unzip the contents of AboutBuster.zip and an AboutBuster directory will be created.
  • Navigate to the AboutBuster directory and double-click on AboutBuster.exe.
  • Click "OK" at the prompt with instructions.
  • Click "Update" and then "Check For Update" to begin the update process.
  • If any updates exist please download them by clicking "Download Update" then click the X to close that window.
  • Now close About:Buster
Update CWShredder
  • Open CWShredder and click I AGREE
  • Click Check For Update
  • Close CWShredder
Boot into Safe Mode:
Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Please run about:buster by RubbeRDuckY:
  • Click Start and then OK to allow AboutBuster to scan for Alternate Data Streams.
  • Click Yes to allow it to shutdown explorer.exe.
  • It will begin to check your computer for malicious files. If it asks if you would like to do a second pass, allow it to do so.
  • When it has finished, click Save Log. Make sure you save it as I may need a copy of it later.
  • Reboot your computer into safe mode again
Run about:buster again following the same instructions as above, this time without the restart at the end

Now run CWShredder. Click I Agree, then Fix and then Next, let it fix everything it asks about.

Now run CleanUp!Reboot your computer into normal windows.

Please run an on-line virus scan at Kaspersky OnLine Scan or if that doesnt work, you can use TrendMicro or BitDefender. (Please post the results of the scan(s) in your next reply)

After all that, please post back with how things went as well as the logs requested and a new HiJackThis log.

Thanks again for teh help. Things went pretty well, I think. I already had CleanUp! CW Shredder came up with nothing. I actually ran two scans with Kaspersky - first a "critical" scan then a "my computer scan." The latter scared me greatly when it picked up around 650 infected objects, but all except two were in my Norton quarantine. The two not in there were the two that showed up on the critical scan. After Kaspersky, though, my "Start" button had disappeared, as had the icons in the lower right corner, so I had to reboot before running the HiJack This log. Thanks again for the help! Here are the logs:

*As I am typing this, Microsoft Antispyware has informed that an application change (svcpro) has been allowed (??)

Here are the two logs for About:blank

Please download ewido security suite it is a free version of the program.
  • Install ewido security suite
  • When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck..
    • Install background guard
    • Install scan via context menu
  • Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop, double-click it.
  • The program will now open to the main screen.
  • When you run ewido for the first time, you will get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
  • You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
    • On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
    • Then click on Start Update.
  • The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
(the status bar at the bottom will display ("Update successful")
  • Exit ewido. DO NOT scan yet.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update ewido.
ewido manual updates

Please download this file: Nailfix Utility
Save it to your desktop.
DO NOT run it yet.

Download dsrfix.zip
Save it to your desktop.
  • Unzip dsrfix.zip and extract it to your desktop.
  • This will create a new folder on your desktop named dsrfix.
  • Do Not open that folder yet.
Please download APT and unzip the contents to a new folder on your desktop.
  • Open the folder you just created and click on apt.exe and search in the window for C:\WINDOWS\System32\bwpvoik.exe.
  • Open your C:\Windows\system32 folder and search for bwpvoik.exe.
Don't delete it yet, just leave the system32 folder open so you can see the bad file.
  • In APT again, Select C:\WINDOWS\System32\bwpvoik.exe and Click Kill3
  • Then immediately delete bwpvoik.exe from your system32 folder.
Close APT.

To reboot into SafeMode with Windows XP, you can follow these steps from Microsoft:

Next, please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, start tapping press F8 key.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
Once in Safe Mode, please double-click on nailfix.exe.
Click "Next" in the setup, then make sure "Run Nailfix" is checked and click "Finish".
Your desktop and icons will disappear and reappear, and a window should open and close very quickly --- this is normal.

Now open ewido and do a scan of your system.
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • You will be prompted to clean the first infection.
  • Select "Perform action on all infections", then proceed.
  • Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
  • Click Save report.
  • Save the report .txt file to your desktop or a location where you can find it easily.
Now scan with HJT and place a checkmark next to each of the following items:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer,SearchURL = about:blank
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://www.dell4me.com/myway

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [gqkjmoq] C:\WINDOWS\System32\bwpvoik.exe r

Close all open windows except for HJT, then click the Fix Checked button. Close HJT.

Now open the folder dsrfix on your desktop.
  • Double-Click on dsrfix.bat
  • A window will pop up briefly then close, this is normal.
Enable show hidden files and folders:

* Click Start.
* Open My Computer.
* Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
* Select the View Tab.
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
* Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.

Files
C:\WINDOWS\VCMnet11.exe
C:\WINDOWS\dinst.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\exp.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\bwpvoik.exe

Now run the CleanUp program:

*IMPORTANT NOTE*
CleanUp deletes EVERYTHING out of your temp/temporary folders, it does not make backups.
If you have any documents or programs that are saved in any Temporary Folders, please make a backup of these before running CleanUp

Running CleanUp
  • Start CleanUp by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).
  • When CleanUp starts go to the Options button (right side of CleanUp screen)
  • Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
  • Now place a checkmark next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):
    • Delete Cookies
This is optional, if you leave the box checked it will remove all of your cookies, at this point removing cookies is a good idea
    • Empty Recycle Bins
    • Delete Prefetch files
    • Cleanup! All Users
  • Click OK
  • Then click on the CleanUp button. This will take a short while, let it do its thing.
  • When asked to reboot system select No
  • Close CleanUp
Finally, restart your computer back into Normal Mode and please post a new HJT log, as well as the ewido report log from the Ewido scan by using Add Reply

Update the definitions file, to get the latest protection.

So start with Step 6 and continue with the rest of the fix

OK, tried all steps, some had problems. First, C:\WINDOWS\System32\bwpvoik.exe did not show up in APT, nor could I find it anywhere in System 32 folder - could it have changed names? Second, during the Safe Mode HiJack This, "04 - HKLM\..Run: [gqkjmoq] C:\WINDOWS\System 32\bwpvoik.exe" did not show up anywhere. Third, when exploring Windows (step after dsrfix), none of the four files you wanted me to delete showed up after I changed the view to show hidden foldes and uncheckd Hide protected operating system.

Thank you again for your time and effort - there is no way I could do any of this stuff w/o your help. On to the logs!
