No, not that I recall. Should I try and run it again?

Sorry for not responding more quickly, but I do not seem to be getting an e-mail notification of any of your replies.

Hi,

You have 2 infections - Nail and epolvy trojan.

Epolvy changes the file name of the file at every reboot of the PC. So chances are that it may have changed the file name since the last boot.

The infection is recognized by this line -

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [xfhrozd] C:\WINDOWS\System32\jubqjxs.exe r

1. Starts with O4 - HKLM\..\Run:
2. Name in the barckets - [xfhrozd] - is a random name
3. The file referenced - jubqjxs.exe - is a random file name and ends in .exe
4. The line itself ends with the letter - r

You can pick this file name and proceed with the fix or you can post a fresh HJT log and not reboot the PC till I give you a fix (I will be around for most of the day).

  • Run apt.exe and search in the window for C:\WINDOWS\System32\jubqjxs.exe.
  • Open your C:\Windows\system32 folder and search for jubqjxs.exe.
Don't delete it yet, just leave the system32 folder open so you can see the bad file.
  • In APT again, Select C:\WINDOWS\System32\jubqjxs.exe and Click Kill3
  • Then immediately delete jubqjxs.exe from your system32 folder.
Close APT.

Reboot the PC in Safe Mode.

Once in Safe Mode, please double-click on nailfix.exe.
Click "Next" in the setup, then make sure "Run Nailfix" is checked and click "Finish".
Your desktop and icons will disappear and reappear, and a window should open and close very quickly --- this is normal.

Now scan with HJT and place a checkmark next to each of the following items:

F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\Nail.exe

Close all open windows except for HJT, then click the Fix Checked button. Close HJT.

Finally, restart your computer back into Normal Mode and please post a new HJT log

Sorry for the tardy reply - I was out of town all day until now.

You were dead on about the random file name! It had changed again, but it was pretty easy to spot, so I followed your directions using the new random name. When I rebooted into Safe Mode, it still showed up on my HiJack This log, but that may have been because I failed to empty the recycle bin. So I placed a check mark next to it, and the Nail entry, and fixed both, and then emptied recycle bin. I dont see either now on this fresh Hijack This log. I do, however, see one of those "about: blank" things. Thanks so much for your help, and hopefully we will be infection-free in short order!!

I thought I should add - Microsoft Antispyware for quite some time (week, week and a half) has been picking up this AproposMedia (Browser Modifier). Thanks again for your help!

Run Hijack This and click on scan. The following items need to be fixed -

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = about:blank

Close all windows other than Hijack This. Check the boxes next to above items and click on Fix checked.

Reboot the PC in Safe Mode.

Run Ewido and do a full system scan. Save the scan report.

Reboot the PC in Normal Mode.

Post back the Ewido scan report and a fresh HJT log

None that I know of, but what do I know!? I have not run a Microsoft scan to see if that AproposMedia (BRowser Modifier) shows up, and that ASCRM.exe (dont know if that is exactly it, its in one of my earlier posts) I think keeps showing up when I try to restart or shut down (i.e., failed to initialize b/c windows station shutting down), but I think we may be good to go.

Thanks for your help - you have been absolutely great!

Can you click on Start ---> Settings ---> Control panel.

Double click on Administrative Tools and then on Computer Management.

Click on System Tools ---> Event Viewer ---> System.

Check for the error related to this - ASCRM.exe. Let me know what it says !!!!!
If there are more than one instances of such messages (you get them while shutting down the PC, so check for that as the common factor), then let me know if they all say the same for the last couple of days !!!

Also check for the same errors / issues in under Applications.

OK - I ran all the scanning programs I have on the computer: Ad-Aware, Spybot, and Ewido all came up empty. Norton picked up something in the Microsoft Antispyware quarantine, and also C:/WINDOWS/weejvj.exe, which I manually deleted (it was described as Adware.Aurora). Microsoft Antispyware picked up that Apropos thing again. Here is the Microsoft scan report:

Spyware Scan Details

End Date: 9/5/2005 10:54:57 AM

I dont know if it is good or bad or harmless, but the lists on both System and Application seemed fairly lengthy. One that appeared somewhat frequently on Application was

Windows cannot unload your classes registry file - it is still in use by other applications or services. The file will be unloaded when it is no longer in use.

It looks like your help has resulted in the elimination of everything malicious, save maybe for that dreaded Apropos, and I thank you a million for that!

Hi,

Lets get rid of the Apropos thing.

Copy the part in bold below into notepad and save it as fix.reg
Save as type:All files (The first line in the file should be REGEDIT4)

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Aprps]

Double click on fix.reg and let it merge with your registry.

Please Download the following tools to assist us in removing this infection!
  • Download WinPFind
    • Right Click the Zip Folder and Select "Extract All"
    • Extract it somewhere you will remember like the Desktop
    • Dont do anything with it yet!
  • Download Track qoo
    • Save it somewhere you will remember like the Desktop
Reboot into Safe Mode
Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Doubleclick WinPFind.exe
  • Click "Start Scan"
  • It will scan the entire System, so please be patient!
  • Once the Scan is Complete
  • Go to the WinPFind folder
  • Locate WinPFind.txt
  • Place those results in the next post!
Reboot back to Normal Mode!

Double Click on "Track qoo.vbs"

Note - If you Antivirus has Script Blocking, you will get a Pop Up Windows asking you what to do. Allow this Entire Script to Run, its harmless!

Wait a few seconds and a notepad page will pop up, Copy & Paste those results and place them in the next post along with the results of WinPFind!

D** it! I was running my daily scans and Ewido came up with something new (it only picked up this one thing, so that's encouraging, right?) I tried to find it manually, but could not find it (maybe it actually cleaned it out?). I am so sorry to add another thing to this! Thanks again so much for your help!

Here is the Ewido report:

---------------------------------------------------------
ewido security suite - Scan report
---------------------------------------------------------

+ Created on: 7:18:11 PM, 9/6/2005
+ Report-Checksum: 9BB8EE4D

+ Scan result:

C:\Program Files\Microsoft AntiSpyware\Quarantine\E88CF020-DB14-4DF4-B291-C79813\A4774711-09B7-4833-A256-A73367 -> Trojan.Agent.db : Cleaned with backup
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\sav2.exe -> TrojanDownloader.Apropo.aj : Cleaned with backup

::Report End

Now on to the steps I took in accordance with your instructions. Before I give the logs, though, I should point out that I copied the info for fix.reg exactly as you put it, meaning that "-" sign before "HKEY" I inserted in there:

Here is the WinPFind log (a lot of this stuff I feel like we already dealt with!):

WARNING: not all files found by this scanner are bad. Consult with a knowledgable person before proceeding.

If you see a message in the titlebar saying "Not responding..." you can ignore it. Windows somethimes displays this message due to the high volume of disk I/O. As long as the hard disk light is flashing, the program is still working properly.

It is difficult to explain what I saw and how I detect it !!! Its almost like asking your doctor what he saw in the lab reports !!!

Download Pocket KillBox from here. There is a Direct Download and a description of what the Program does inside this link.

Please open Notepad, and copy/paste the code in the box below into a new text file. Save it as KillQoo.reg (set Filetype to "All Files") and save it on your Desktop.

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\*\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers\qgmtnkny]

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\policies\Explorer\Run]
"yayqv"=-
"yayqv.exe"=-

Open Pocket Killbox and Copy & Paste the entries below into the "Full Path of File to Delete"

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\mc-110-12-0000079.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\yayqv.exe

As you Paste each entry into Killbox, place a tick by any of these Selections available

"Delete on Reboot"
"Unregister .dll before Deleting"

Click the Red Circle with the White X in the Middle to Delete!

Restart in Safe Mode and Run those files through Killbox once more to be sure nothing survived.

This time place a tick by any of these selections available

"Standard File Kill"
"End Explorer Shell while Killing File"
"Unregister .dll before Deleting"

Now Locate and DoubleClick KillQoo.reg-> Allow it to merge into the Registry!

Restart back in Normal Mode and Post a fresh HijackThis log!
