I have been infected with the Aurora virus for several weeks. After doing some research, I came across your site, which is wonderful. I followed your steps that you say to take before entering a post. Once I ran Trojan Hunter, the virus seems to be gone. I have rebooted once and run the computer for some time with no incident so far - we'll see if it holds up.

My question goes to your site's comments about more than one virus protection. Throughout this process, I have now ended up with Norton Internet Security, Spy Sweeper (already had those prior to incident), Microsoft Antivirus, Ewido, Ad-Aware SE, Spybot and Trojan Hunter. Which one(s) should I keep?

Also, please let me know if there is anything else that I need to do to, like post a Hijack This log, etc.

Microsoft decided to not remove some spyware that we ask users to delete. They seem to have made an agreement with this advertising company, so we'll leave Microsoft AntiSpyware up to the user. I say uninstall it.

Ewido is said to be compatible with many antivirus programs (Norton, McAfee, AVG, etc.), so you may keep that. It has a 14 day trial period and after that, it's free to keep. You may uninstall Trojan Hunter if you didn't pay for it already. Keep Spybot and Ad-aware as those two should be your main programs to remove spyware.

I recommend uninstalling it, but it's your decision. If you do uninstall it, get Grisoft AVG (antivirus) and ZoneAlarm (look for free download link) as your firewall program.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Go to My Computer->Tools->Folder Options->View tab:
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
* Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm and then click OK.

For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep).

Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode by hitting the F8 key repeatedly until a menu shows up (and choose Safe Mode from the list). In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work. Make sure to close any open browsers. Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any):

Delete the following Files/Folders (delete folders if no filename is specified) according to their directory (if none, just do a search for them) and delete them if they exist:

If you haven't done so already, run Ewido now that you are in safe mode. Save the log and post it here when you post the new HijackThis log.

Restart and run BOTH these scans:

Run an online virus scan at TrendMicro http://uk.trendmicro...call_launch.php. Just follow the instructions on the site to run the free online scan. If any viruses/trojans are detected, try to delete or clean them in that site. If any are not cleanable, copy and paste the infected files here. You may also use Panda ActiveScan at http://www.pandasoft...ucts/activescan. Post the log from the Panda scan here.

Restart and run a new HijackThis scan. Save the log file and post it here along with the Ewido log.

You have to be more clear on that. What is the filename? Desktop? It seems to be related to the Window Media Player update feature.

Delete this file:

C:\Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy\Dummies\dummy.cd_clint.dll

Turn off system restore by right clicking on My Computer and go to Properties->System Restore and check the box for Turn off System Restore. Click Apply and then OK. Restart your computer and uncheck the same box to enable System Restore.

Restart.

Your log is clean.

To help prevent future spyware installations/infections, please read the Anti-Spyware Tutorial and use the tools provided.

Are there any problems now? If not, you should be set to go.

Thanks for all of your help. The computer is working great now. The desktop file is a Notepad icon. When I click on it ,the following file occurs in a notepad window: [LocalizedFileNames]
Windows Media Player.lnk=@C:\WINDOWS\inf\unregmp2.exe,-4
If I try to delete it, I'm warned that it is a system file. I'm wondering is it something that is out of place? And if so, how do I get it back? Do I need it at all?
