Hey guys,
I'm at my wits end here, I've tried about 6 different methods for getting rid of about:blank I've read on this and other forums, but it keeps coming back. I don't seem to have a lot of the hijack this items people keep saying I should delete, nor do I have a lot of the hidden .dll files I've heard I should delete, so I need some help or I guess I'll just have to scrap this puppy and reformat the hard drive.

I've used adaware, spyboy, hijack this, spyware blaster, reglite.exe, cwschredder, cleanup and window washer, but I can never seem to generate the results people say these programs should produce in order to delete the needed items...here is my hijack this log: I've tried deleting a bunch of this stuff, but it just keeps coming back....can anyone help me?

Hey, Thanks!

Ok, here's the rundown...

Step 1: didn't find anything wrong
Step 2: Obtained and ran program
Step 3: Obtained and installed ok
Step 4: Ran Hijack This: items 3-6 on the list were not present, but clicked and deleted items 1,2,7,8,9,10,11,12.

Rebooted, and IE went to normal home page...still got a pop-up for ifriends, but hey, it's still 99% better, I did notice that a few sex sites had been added to the bookmarks since I last looked at it (after the bookmark for this forum, which was the last thing I manually bookmarked)....I'm wondering, could this be related to about:blank or is it a seperate issue?

But anyway, here's the new log, gracias!

Did you run Abou: Buster as well?

I still see one problem left:
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {85B31A6E-2E40-52CF-704D-A427D8484CF4} - C:\WINDOWS\javade.dll

Fix that one with all IE windows closed.

Then download Ad-Aware at lavasoft.usa.com
After installing AAW, and before running the program, update by using the Globe icon.
Shut down and restart Ad-Aware.
Now press "Scan Now", "Select drives\folders to scan" and select the active partition (usually C: ), then 'next', and let Ad-Aware scan your drives.
It will find a number of "bad" files and registry keys. Click 'Next' again.
Rightclick in that pane and choose "select all" and click 'next'.
It will ask you whether you'd like to remove all checked items. Click OK.
Finally, close Ad-Aware, and reboot.
Make sure the option to check your favorites is checkmarked as well.
The unknown ones were very likely a effect of this infection.

Regards,

Pieter

Yeah, I ran buster....that "javade.dll" item wasn't mentioned in the list of things you said to delete....so I ran hijack this again, and most of the items were back...and the about:blank problem came back after a few minutes.

The 3 sex sites that automatically bookmark themselves did it again when I opened IE: the sites are bookmarked as:

1. Only Sex
2. Search the web
3. 7 days of free porn

Just a side note, I've heard rumors that Adaware is itself filled with spyware and trojans, is this true?

Here's my latest log

Instead of listening to false rumours you should have kept Windows and IE uptodate. None of this would have happened. wink.gif

Download CWShredder from http://www.intermute...r_download.html

Reboot into safe mode

and run in this following order:
About: Buster
CWShredder
AdAware

Then run HijackThis and fix weverything that is left of these:
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\ehqke.dll/sp.html#28129
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\ehqke.dll/sp.html#28129
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = about:blank
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\ehqke.dll/sp.html#28129
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\ehqke.dll/sp.html#28129
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\ehqke.dll/sp.html#28129
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\ehqke.dll/sp.html#28129
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\ehqke.dll/sp.html#28129
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {629677B4-0CD0-BF9C-EB4D-A30FECDBC8D6} - C:\WINDOWS\atlik32.dll

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [d3tw32.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\d3tw32.exe

Then boot normally.

If it returns again after this, download and unzip http://computercops....rijn/adsspy.zip
Run it and post the log it makes.

Thanks for the info, will try this and repost log...

just for the record, I've been using Adaware for a year now, it was just something someone mentioned to me today and I wanted to float it out there and see what you thought....

A lot of the anti-spyware programs out there SAY they're free,a nd will let you waste time downloading them and scanning, then ask you to pay before it fixes the problems (i.e. SpyKiller), so the possibility that a program to get rid of spyware would hide spyware in it didn't seem like too far-fetched a possibility...

anyway, I'll let you know what happens, thanks for your patience!

ok, I did everything you said, but it came back...this is what happens

After I run all this stuff, when I reboot normally, I open IE and everything looks fine, (except those bookmarks are back) and I get a popup. So I close the popup, and then after that, if I close IE and reopen, or refresh or hit Home, about:blank reappears.

I ran that other program, here's what came up:
C:\WINDOWS\cdplayer.ini : aomhf (7305 bytes)
C:\WINDOWS\cdplayer.ini : ghkbx (10752 bytes)
C:\WINDOWS\cdplayer.ini : hzpes (98304 bytes)

C:\WINDOWS\WMSysPrx(3).prx : cfodz (98304 bytes)

and here's the new and unimproved hijack this log

First run AdsSpy again.

After the scan have it remove these streams:

C:\WINDOWS\cdplayer.ini : ghkbx (10752 bytes)
C:\WINDOWS\cdplayer.ini : hzpes (98304 bytes)

C:\WINDOWS\KB835732.log : ebmuh (29696 bytes)
C:\WINDOWS\msgsocm.log : yxakk (10752 bytes)

C:\WINDOWS\regopt.log : hbaax (10752 bytes)
C:\WINDOWS\Rhododendron.bmp : uqkgz (10752 bytes)
C:\WINDOWS\SchedLgU.Txt : mjvtb (29696 bytes)

C:\WINDOWS\SWWATER.INI : etdhv (29696 bytes)
C:\WINDOWS\uninst.exe : swrsn (3347 bytes)

Just have to find what it is.

Can you post another AdSSpy log as well?

oh, almost forgot, here's the updated adspy log...

C:\WINDOWS\control.ini : lqprb (3347 bytes)
C:\WINDOWS\MININU.LOG : bhcha (29696 bytes)
C:\WINDOWS\msoffice.ini : txtdu (3347 bytes)
C:\WINDOWS\ODBCINST.INI : ikapv (3347 bytes)
C:\WINDOWS\PowerReg.dat : rdsuo (29696 bytes)
C:\WINDOWS\vb.ini : adzps (98304 bytes)
C:\WINDOWS\vmmreg32.dll : wijvd (98304 bytes)
C:\WINDOWS\WINCROSS.INI : hjmgz (10752 bytes)
C:\WINDOWS\WindowsUpdate.log : wgfsl (10752 bytes)
C:\WINDOWS\WMSysPrx(2).prx : cfodz (98304 bytes)
C:\WINDOWS\WMSysPrx(3).prx : cfodz (98304 bytes)
C:\WINDOWS\WMSysPrx.prx : cfodz (98304 bytes)

if I'm getting the feel for this (and I think I am)...I'm guessing that lines 1 and 6 are not supposed to be there?

In this case, size does matter. wink.gif

Maybe I was too carefull.
I'd like to try something.

Can you run About:Buster a few times. Stop after the first time it doesn't find anything anymore.
Then run AdsSpy and post that log again.

I'll ceheck back after I walked the dogs (half an hour)
After that it'll have to wait till tomorrow.
I had an allnighter yesterday and I'm too old for two in a row. wink.gif

Pieter
