so I didn't know if this counted as "not finding anything", so I stopped after 5 and ran adspy, here's the log:

This doesn't fit:

About:buster says
No ADS found on system

Try it like this. Bring up TaskManager and kill this process first:
C:\WINDOWS\winbx.exe
Then kill every instance of
C:\WINDOWS\adddz32.exe

Then have AdsSpy remove
C:\WINDOWS\WINCROSS.INI : hjmgz (10752 bytes)
C:\WINDOWS\WindowsUpdate.log : wgfsl (10752 bytes)

Then fix these lines in HijackThis:
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {CAC07790-0078-A300-8F5F-4A6A5ED1010B} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\addnp.dll

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [winbx.exe] C:\WINDOWS\winbx.exe

Plus all the Hijacked r1's that have surfaced by then.

Then reboot and let us know.

Regards,

Pieter

hey,
hope the weekend treated you well....I managed to avoid nightmares of about:blank....I followed the instructions you posted on Fri, and when I rebooted, I was able to go to about three websites before a pop up appeared and reset everything to about:blank.....it always seems to be a popup with the name "only the best"....so I ran buster and adspy again, here are the logs this time...

Let me know the results.

just a side note, I installed Firefox, and I no longer get the popup or the about:blank....I'm assuming this is because it takes advantage of a hole in IE....so I guess that will solve the problem in the short term, but I'd still like to get rid of it anyway.

Hmm the Win32.Agent means it really is CWS.

Can you rerun About:Buster a few times until it says you are clean.

Check the items listed below in HijackThis, close all windows except HijackThis and click Fix checked:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\qhqst.dll/sp.html#28129
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\qhqst.dll/sp.html#28129
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\qhqst.dll/sp.html#28129
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\qhqst.dll/sp.html#28129
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {28788014-A45C-118B-A96E-A6516BFCAB86} - C:\WINDOWS\javasz32.dll

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [winbx.exe] C:\WINDOWS\winbx.exe

Then reboot.

Your assumption about Firefox is correct. You are still infected but FireFox is not affected.

It gives us one advantage though. You dont have to open IE to come back here and post the results. :tazz:

Pieter

I did a search for adddz32.exe, and found two files in the system w/ those letters...

one was adddz32.exe, a hidden file in the windows folder,
the other was ADDDZ32.EXE-33FD84AA.pf, located in the windows/prefetch folder

I was thinking I should delete them, but I figured I should check in first

We seem to have gotten rid of winbx.exe

Delete these ADS's

C:\WINDOWS\javabd32.dll : jvtnz (10752 bytes)
C:\WINDOWS\WINCROSS.INI : hjmgz (10752 bytes)

Then fix:
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {039B7C13-F237-757B-D633-29FC992B6EB7} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\javasp32.dll

Reboot and look for:
javasp32.dat

delete if it exists

Regards,

Pieter

look for javasp32.dat where? In one of these utilities, or do you want me to do a search for it?

look for javasp32.dat where?

Just, be sure you're able to view hidden files, and search for it on your hard drive(s).
