WinFixer 2005 problems [RESOLVED]

Hi. Just new to the board, mostly a member out of necessity because I've got no clue how to fix my problem. (although now that I'm here I'm going to stay here because I had no idea what a handy resource was available! :tazz: )

My computer specifications (in case they're necessary) : Dell Inspiron 1150 laptop with Windows XP Home and a Pentium 4 processor, 19GB of free space ... anything else needed?

If anyone could help, that would be great.

Just as a forewarning, I'm not completely computer literate, only moderately. (So if you could put up with my stupid questions about simplistic things, I'd appreciate it)

Edit: And if it matters, I've got Service Pack 2, Norton SystemWorks, and Webroot Spy Sweeper running but I'm not sure if they did any good. Or if they even made it worse (if thats possible) or if I've made it worse (if its possible, then chances are I've probably gone and done that, sorry!)

You Must Read This Before Posting A Hijackthis Log

this will help you clean up to 70 percent of all problems by yourself. If at the end of the process you are still having difficulty--and you may not be-- then post a hijackthis log in THIS thread.

I'm having problems with the checking for updates for Ad-aware SE. I keep getting this message: "The definitions file could not be read, please update again." I've already tried 3 times. Any suggestions?

Hi Again.

I am (unfortunately) still suffering from popups originating from WinFixer 2005. The only difference being is that bar on top of the pop up (The one at the top that shows the name of the webpage, not sure what its exactly called) says something to tune of that theres now a problem with it showing up. But this only shows up about half the time, and theres still popups (Does that make any sense, its like the other steps have lessened its overall effect, but didn't actually eliminate the threat).

I've done everything up to the downloading of Hijack this.

Does that mean I should download Highjack this and run the software, and post my log up? If thats the case, I'll get to it later tonight.

I want to aplogize to you. I misread your post. :tazz:

after you finish this, can you please go to MSCONFIG and make sure everything is checked in the startup. Then reboot and post a fresh Hijackthis log.

Please download VundoFix.zip to your desktop.
  • Double-click VundoFix.zip and extract it to your C:\ directory.
  • Copy the instructions below and paste them into Notepad for reference.
    • All other windows need to be closed while doing this fix!
  • Navigate to the new folder C:\VundoFix
  • Double click on KillVundo.bat
    • When it starts running it will tell you that you need an active internet connection then ask you to press any key once you do.
  • Please press any key to continue.
  • Wait for HiJackThis to open.
  • When HiJackThis opens, click Do a system scan only. Place a check next to the following items, if found:
    O2 - BHO: MSEvents Object - {827DC836-DD9F-4A68-A602-5812EB50A834} - C:\WINDOWS\AppPatch\catcmd.dll
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: catcmd - C:\WINDOWS\AppPatch\catcmd.dll
  • Once they all have a check next to them, click the FIX CHECKED button, then close HiJackThis.
You will once again be prompted to press any key. Upon doing so this time you will receive a "Blue Screen Of Death". Don't worry, this is normal! Let the computer reboot. If it doesn't boot straight to windows, manually turn the computer off and then back on.

Once the computer is rebooted post a new HiJackThis log as well as the contents of vundofix.txt which can be found in this folder: C:\VundoFix

No worries. I appreciate all the help your giving me, and when I went back, I saw that my post could be seen as a bit misleading.

I'll do all the stuff you've asked but I've got a question about a security warning that keeps popping up from ewido.

(just copied the info about the warning)

Its popped up more than once and I'm curious as to why, since every time it does I press the clean option available. Any insight/advice?

EDIT: I did the VundoFix thing, and found and got rid of the different things you mentioned, but for some reason was unable to locate the text file to copy here. It isn't in the file, and I've done a computer search and it doesn't seem to be anywhere. Should I redo it again to post it? Or is it really not all that important?

Spysweeper

Please disable SpySweeper, as it may hinder the removal of some entries. You can re-enable it after you're clean.

To disable SpySweeper:

Open it click >Options over to the left then >Program Options >Uncheck "load at windows startup".
Over to the left click "shields" and uncheck all there.
Uncheck "home page shield".
Uncheck "automatically restore default without notification".

The Temp folders should be cleaned out periodically as installation programs and hijack programs leave a lot of junk there. Download CleanUp! (Alternate Link if the main link does not work) and install it.

open Hijackthis and do a scan. Please check off the following items:

Run CleanUp! and click on CleanUp! button. When it asks you if you want to logoff, click on Yes.

Reboot into normal mode and please run this online virus scan: ActiveScan - Save the results from the scan!

Please post the Active scan log and a fresh HiJackThis log. Let me know how your computer is running.

but I keep getting this message:

Reboot into safe mode.

Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

open Hijackthis and do a scan. Please check off the following items:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NI.UWFX5RS_0001_0808] "C:\Documents and Settings\Christina\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\GHCFOV47\WFXScanR[1].exe"
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NI.UWFX5LP_0001_0803] "C:\Documents and Settings\Christina\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\CVVZISX9\WFXScan[1].exe"

click FIX CHECKED then close Hijackthis

Run CleanUp! and click on CleanUp! button. When it asks you if you want to logoff, click on Yes.

Reboot into normal mode and please run this online virus scan: ActiveScan - Save the results from the scan!

Please post the Active scan log and a fresh HiJackThis log. Let me know how your computer is running.
