Well, about a two weeks ago, my Father installed Norton Anti-Virus 2005 on the comp. All seemed good, until the computer started to slow down terribly. It's your 2.8GHz 512MB DDRRAM computer with Comcast's Broadband internet service. I have the Google toolbar and use it for all of my searches, but that didn't want to work. It didn't want to work after it took 7 minutes to open up Internet Explorer that is. I proceeded to go to Google's home page, but that took more than 10 minutes. I don't know how long it took because I gave up waiting after 10. Of course by this time, I've lost my patience and just given up on the [bleep] thing and proceed to hook up my 700MHz AMD K-7 with 256MB SDRAM. Sure enough, it was running a lot quicker. Before I unplugged the other one, I checked the processes and found realsched.exe to be running at 99. I quickly closed that, and then another process iosdt.exe was soon running at 99. I closed that and then the System Idle Process sprang right up and I couldn't close that at all. I found this website on the other comp and noticed how someone said something about svchost.exe. I found that I had 7 of those running! 7! of the same program! I closed those and soon after the computer just rebooted without warning. I loaded it back up and searched svchost.exe and found 3 files. I was able to delete two of them but one was left at C:\windows\system32 and it was protected. Deleting the first two helped tremendously, but my comp is still not up to par. Currently, the 99 CPU usage switches between System Idle Process and ccApp.exe which is Norton Anti-Virus. Another thing with Norton is that occasionally the pop-up notification of rules being set comes up. For what rules I would like to know, but perhaps there is a backdoor that can't be picked up??? I have no idea. My Father called Microsoft and HP and both of them said to restore. I hate doing that because that's the easy way to get out of a learning experience. If you can help at all, please do!

Just stay calm. svchost.exe is a valid windows file needed to run your services. System Idle Process @ 99% is great news. That means that the resources that you are not using are being used for idling. That means nothing is using up the resources that shouldn't be.

Go to control panel, add/remove programs and uninstall any of the following:

TV Media
Windows Adcontrol
NewDotNet (new.net)
WebRebates
WhenU
180 Solutions
myway
mysearch
mywebsearch
viewpoint manager
viewpoint
wild tangent
weatherbug
gain
gator
gmt
wintools
any searchbar/toolbar besides google

Next start Hijack This and make sure all other windows are closed. Remove the following entries.

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://www.kpvnlsiso...XsyLKbtSs5.html
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://ie.redirect.h...lion&pf=desktop
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://ie.redirect.h...lion&pf=desktop
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://ie.redirect.h...lion&pf=desktop
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyOverride = localhost

There's more to remove but I'm hoping that by removing these you will be able to access the internet better with the infected machine because It will make it easier if you can access resources on the web rather than transfer files between computers. Reboot normally and post new log, I will then help you clean it up all the way.

This is a great site where you can download a zip file that shows all startup
process and if you need them or not.
