I've tried everything and can't seem to get rid of this one message from Norton - help!
Norton Antivirus has detected a virus on your computer. w32.desktophijack
This virus cannot be removed.

I just purchased and ran xoftspy thinking that this program would get rid of it. My internet has been running much faster since I ran this program, but I still get the virus error message when I restarted my machine.

Hi Trevuren, and thank you so much for helping me!

I saved the SP1 update and my desktop and tried to run it, it got to the "Performing Inventory" part and said:
The file c:\windows\system32\wininet.dll is open or in use by another application. Close all other applications and then click retry.

I closed everything else and hit retry, and it kept giving me the same error message. The only other option was to cancel.

• Run HijackThis
  
• Click SCAN and SAVE LOG. (a notepad window will open with the log in it when you click Save Log) (Ctrl-A to'select all', Ctrl-C to 'copy')
  
• POST the log into this thread using 'Add Reply' (Ctrl-V to 'paste')

Your system has an About:Blank infection as well as other less serious infections.

1. Download the stand alone version of CWShredder

• Save the program to your Desktop
• Click on the CWShredder icon, then on the RUN button
• Click on "Check for Updates"
• Once the program is updated, close it until needed. DO NOT USE IT NOW

2. If you do not have a zip program please download and install the evaluation version of Winzip.

3. Download SpSeHjfix.zip to the desktop.

• Then right click on the desktop and select new >folder, name it spfix.
  
• Unzip SpSeHjfix.zip into the new folder.

4. Disconnect from the net and Close ALL OPEN PROGRAMS.

5. Run 'SpSeHjfix'. and click on "Start Disinfection".

When it's finished it will reboot your machine to finish the cleaning process.
The tool creates a log of the fix which will appear in the folder.

If it doesn't find any of the SE files or any hidden reinstallers it will say system clean and not go on to next stage

6. Once it is finished run CWShredder - Hit The FIX button!

7. Reboot and post a new HJT log and the log that was created by 'SpSeHjfix'.

Warning Note: On a few occasions it has been reported that after using the SPSEHjfix you cannot open Internet Explorer. To fix this, go into Control Panel >Internet Options >Programs & press reset web settings, then you can set your home page to what you want on the general tab.

I ran it twice, and it didn't reboot my machine. Would it make any difference if I told you that I think my husband deleted the svc.host.exe file from our task manager a few weeks ago because he thought it had something to do with the virus? (Sorry I forgot to mention this before.) Every time I restart my machine it says it is looking for the svc.host.exe file, and then the windows installer comes up, and it can't find what its looking for either. I just click cancel and get on the internet. I got this computer used, and I don't use it for anything besides the internet. Do I have to buy Windows Office XP to get Excel on my computer?

Hi Trevuren! Yes, things are running much, much better. No more svchost.exe error when I start up my machine - but the pesky Norton virus warning is still there. Will this final cleanup get rid of the Norton message?

1. Please RIGHT-CLICK HERE to download Silent Runner's.

• Save it to the desktop.
• Run Silent Runner's by doubleclicking the "Silent Runners" icon on your desktop.
• You will see a text file appear on the desktop - it's not done, let it run (it won't appear to be doing anything!)
• Once you receive the prompt All Done!, open the text file on the desktop, copy that entire log, and paste it into the thread.

*NOTE* If you receive any warning message about scripts, please choose to allow the script to run.

2. Pleasedownload RKFiles from HERE

• Unzip RKfiles.zip to the desktop
• Double-click RKFiles.bat to run it. It may take a while.
• When it is finished a window should appear with a log.

3. Please copy the contents of the log and paste them here

• Note: the log with be saved at c:\log.txt
