I am aware that Automatic updates can cause this problem because more than one update want to install themselves at the same time. But how can you tell them that if they are already downloaded and waiting to auto-install?

Should I uninstall sp2 and install sp1a? :tazz:

Hi hodesworthe,

I can't see anything wrong in your log.
Can you describe what happens exactly if you try to reboot your computer from the Start button?

The screen just will blink, my icons will momentarily disappear, and then reappear. Any further actions I try to take after this say 'The application failed to initialize because Windows is shutting down.' I thought I might just need to wait longer, but one night I left it go all night, still nothing.

I also cannot install thirteen Windows Updates I downloaded recently and cannot figure out why. I went with a System Restore recently, and was having this problem before the Restore so I figured I'd start fresh. Sometime after Windows XP sp2 gets installed, the downloaded updates fail to install. No error code, just failed.

I have tried doing a manual install of each individual one to no avail as well.

Any ideas? :tazz: :)

Maybe a silly one, but worth a try, since it is an easy way out if it works.

Download and install
http://www.sysintern...ssExplorer.html

Close as many programs as possible
Start the program by doubleclicking procexp.exe

In the list of processes find:
Winlogon.exe and select it
Rightclick that line and select Suspend

Then scroll up and select smss.exe
Rightclick and select Kill Process Tree

Repeat that same for Services.exe

Now Windows will start a sequence to shutdown Windows.
You may have to choose "Resume" for Winlogon.exe if it doesn't reboot now.

I'm hoping it will install the pending updates once it reboots normally.
Let me know.

Regards,
