I've spent all day trying to rid a computer of an astounding assortment of spyware, malware, viruses, trojans, etc. I've run AdAware, Spybot, AVG, TrojanHunter, CleanUp!, and I've attempted to install Windows Updates but can't even do that much. (It seems like updates have not been done in some time, at least a few months.) I've also gone through the motions of removing a bunch of different spyware but continue to get many and continuous popups, requests to install software, etc. I also get the following error upon startup:

Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library
Runtime error!
Program: C:\Program Files\CMAPP\Client\cmappclient.exe
This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way. Please contact the application's support team for more information.

Additionally, neither Firefox nor Internet Explorer will open - I just get an error like so:

"firefox.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."

followed by the usual text about sending in an error report.

Any help would be much appreciated, both by myself and the non-profit org I'm trying to assist. Many thanks!

Hi jackatlinc and welcome to the Geeks to Go Forums.

My name is Trevuren and I will be helping you with your log.

1. Go to Geeks to Go
. Click on My Controls at the top right hand corner of the window. (make sure you have signed in first)
. In the left hand column, click "View Topics"
. If you click on the title of your post, you will be taken there

2. Also, while at the My Controls page, check the box to the right of your post and then scroll down.
.Where it says "unsubscribe" click the pull-down menu and select "immediate email notification"

3. We want to stop, disable and delete an added service (023)

A. To stop a service and set to 'disabled'
  • Go to Start > Run and type in Services.msc then click OK
  • Click the Extended tab.
  • Scroll down until you find the service.
    ===>Windows Overlay Components
  • Click once on the service to highlight it.
  • Click Stop
  • Right-Click on the service.
  • Click on 'Properties'
  • Select the 'General' tab
  • Click the Arrow-down tab on the right-hand side on the 'Start-up Type' box
  • From the drop-down menu, click on 'Disabled'
  • Click the 'Apply' tab, then click 'OK'
The service is now stopped and disabled.

B. We will now delete the service:

1. Open HJT

2. Click on Config>>Misc Tools>>Delete an NT Service

3. Copy/Paste Windows Overlay Components in the space provided and click OK

4. The program will ask you to REBOOT --- Accept

5. REBOOT into SAFE MODE

6. Using Windows Explorer, locate and DELETE the following file (if it still is present):

C:\WINDOWS\owwnkwb.exe

7. REBOOT back into Normal Mode

8. Finally, run HijackThis, click SCAN, produce a LOG and POST it in this thread for review.

Regards,

Trevuren

1. Please try to Uninstall Surfsidekick3 through your Add/Remove Programs, if you can.

2. Then Reboot your machine.

3. Post a fresh HJT log into this thread.

I did that, and the pop-ups seem to have chilled out - yay! Still can't open Firefox or Internet Explorer, though. I can get to the web by opening a Windows Explorer window and typing in a URL there.

Also, as an aside, every time I go to the geekstogo.com main website, I get this message: "Spybot-S&D has blocked the download of "Avenua A, Inc."!"

Here's my newest log:

You have the latest version of VX2.
  • Download L2mfix from one of these two locations:

    http://www.atribune....oads/l2mfix.exe
    http://www.downloads....org/l2mfix.exe

  • Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe.
  • Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then OPEN the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop.
  • Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #"1" for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing Enter.
  • This will scan your computer and it may appear as if nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, Notepad will open with a log.
  • Copy the contents of that log and paste it into this thread.
IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

Close any programs you have open since this step requires a reboot.
  • From the l2mfix folder on your desktop, double click l2mfix.bat and select option #2 for Run Fix by typing "2" and then pressing ENTER.
  • Then press any key to reboot your computer.
  • After a reboot, your desktop and icons will appear, then disappear (this is normal). L2mfix will continue to scan your computer.
  • When it's finished, Notepad will open with a log.
  • Copy the contents of that log and paste it back into this thread, along with a new hijackthis log.
IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other files in the l2mfix folder unless you are asked to do so!

Regards,

Trevuren

Followed these steps successfully. I tried opening Firefox and it worked! So did Internet Explorer, but neither actually connected to the internet. I then restarted, tried to open Firefox again, got the same error as I used to, and the computer randomly restarted. Now I'm back in and the pop-ups are back with a vengeance.

Two other problems that are happening upon startup:

I get an error message saying that AUPNS2.DLL cannot be found.
And I get the following C++ error:

Runtime Error!

Program: C:\Program Files\CMAPP\Client\cmappclient.exe

This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way. Please contact the application's support team for more information.

Here are my logs:

That worked exceptionally well. Did you see the trojans that were deleted? One of the dirtiest l2m logs yet!

One problem:

You forgot to send me a fresh HJT log.

Yeah - this computer is a member computer at a non-profit organization, people have been doing all sorts of crazy stuff on it! I've never seen a comp so bad (except the next one of theirs that I just started on...)

Here's the HJT log:

Please Download the following tools to assist us in removing this infection!
  • Download WinPFind
    • Right Click the Zip Folder and Select "Extract All"
    • Extract it somewhere you will remember like the Desktop
    • Dont do anything with it yet!
  • Download Trackgoo
    • Save it somewhere you will remember like the Desktop
Reboot into Safe Mode

Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Doubleclick WinPFind.exe
  • Click "Start Scan"
  • It will scan the entire System, so please be patient!
  • Once the Scan is Complete
  • Go to the WinPFind folder
  • Locate WinPFind.txt
  • Place those results in the next post!
Reboot back to Normal Mode!

Double Click on "Track qoo.vbs"

Note - If you Antivirus has Script Blocking, you will get a Pop Up Windows asking you what to do. Allow this Entire Script to Run, its harmless!

Wait a few seconds and a notepad page will pop up. Copy & Paste those results and place them in the next post along with the results of WinPFind!

Regards,

Trevuren

WinPFind:

WARNING: not all files found by this scanner are bad. Consult with a knowledgable person before proceeding.

If you see a message in the titlebar saying "Not responding..." you can ignore it. Windows somethimes displays this message due to the high volume of disk I/O. As long as the hard disk light is flashing, the program is still working properly.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order in which they are mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.

1. Download Pocket KillBox from here. There is a Direct Download and a description of what the Program does inside this link.

2. Please open Notepad, and copy/paste the code in the box below into a new text file. Save it as KillQoo.reg (set Filetype to "All Files") and save it on your Desktop. NOTE: The word REGEDIT4 is part of the text to be copied

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\*\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers\gmntfnqk]

[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{36954194-3dc6-4224-9a23-2343f33cc2a7}]

[HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\policies\Explorer\Run]
" jqgqsa.exe"=-

3. Open Pocket Killbox
  • Copy & Paste the entries below into the "Full Path of File to Delete"

    C:\WINDOWS\bwhqqzx.EXE
    C:\WINDOWS\system\jqgqsa.exe
    C:\Windows\System32\conres.cpl
    C:\\WINDOWS\\System32\\ksg4lg.exe
    C:\Documents and Settings\staff\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\drkp.exe
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\drkp.exe
    C:\Documents and Settings\staff\Application Data\Sskknwrd.dll

    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\Pop1A.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\rasdlg.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\supdate.dll

  • As you Paste each entry into Killbox, place a check beside any of these Selections available:
    • "Delete on Reboot"
    • "Unregister .dll before Deleting"
  • Click the Red Circle with the White X in the Middle to Delete!

  • REBOOT in Safe Mode and Run those files through Killbox once more to be sure nothing survived.

*This time place a checkmark by any of these selections available:
    • "Standard File Kill"
    • "End Explorer Shell while Killing File"
    • "Unregister .dll before Deleting"
4. Now Locate and DoubleClick KillQoo.reg-> Allow it to merge into the Registry!

5. Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [bwhqqzx] C:\WINDOWS\bwhqqzx.EXE
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [winsync] C:\WINDOWS\System32\ksg4lg.exe reg_run

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked.

6. REBOOT back in Normal Mode

7. Finally, run HijackThis, click SCAN, produce a LOG and POST it in this thread for review.

Regards,

Trevuren

I did this all successfully, except that I couldn't find this entry in HijackThis to fix it:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [bwhqqzx] C:\WINDOWS\bwhqqzx.EXE

Also, not sure if this is related, but I keep getting the following error upon startup:

RUNDLL
Error loading AUNPS2.DLL
The specified module could not be found.

Here's the new HijackThis log:
