I caught a case of the blues while online. I have searched enough of your website's postings to clean up my Hijack file (at least to the best of my ability) by using all of the tools listed in the, "start here" section. CWShredder finds nothing, AboutBuster doesn't do much either and spyware blaster seemed to cause things to get worse. Go figure. Anyway, I have a shareware program that informs me when a program is trying to register and 'executable', and I just keep clicking "NO" when the various programs try. I got 'rid' of ATLOX32.exe by switching to safe mode, searching for it and deleting, but if I click on Internet Explorer, I will get a new virus and have to start all over to get rid of that one. Please helppppppppp! Please also suggest some means of protecting myself from this happening again.

Thanks

:tazz:

Here is a copy of a Hijack log that I just created.

Hi Sam...as far as I know, the problem still exists. I have deleted the IE shortcut from our desktop so we won't accidentally click on it and create further problems. Here is my latest Hijack log. Right before I created the log, I used CleanUP! I didn't mention in my original post that the true hijacking is an About:none page that pops up (am I saying that right?) Using MS Outlook doesn't seem to create any problems. I would love to get this computer cleaned up and running smooth again...I appreciate all your help!!

Here's the log:

Before proceeding with these steps I see you are controlling your startup items with msconfig. Please run msconfig and enable all startup items. Do not reboot yet when it asks you to. Follow these instructions.

We are going to need some tools to remove this infection. Please download, install, and update any of these programs that you don't already have. Do not run any of them yet.
Next I want you to make sure that you can VIEW ALL HIDDEN FILES.

If you have problems with any of these steps make a note of the problem and then continue on to the next step. Let me know of any problems in your next reply. Much of this fix has to be performed in Safe Mode where you won't be able to access the Internet.

Please print out these instructions.

Please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
* if you have trouble getting into Safe mode go here for more info.

=============

Once in Safe mode follow these steps:
  • Run Hijackthis again, click scan, and Put a checkmark next to each of these. Then close all other windows--you should only see HijackThis on your Desktop--and click the Fix Checked button.

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
    O2 - BHO: Class - {07146AF0-7FF5-EAB9-8DF4-A761A47B6EC0} - C:\WINDOWS\MFCDA.DLL
    O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [WINHP32.EXE] C:\WINDOWS\WINHP32.EXE /s

  • Next run CWShredder, making sure to click "Fix".

  • Double click AboutBuster.exe that you downloaded earlier. Click OK, click Start, then click OK. This will scan your computer for the bad files and delete them. Save the report(copy and paste into notepad or wordpad and save as a .txt file) and post a copy back here when you are done with all the steps.

  • Delete these files(do not be concerned if they don't exist):

    C:\WINDOWS\MFCDA.DLL
    C:\WINDOWS\WINHP32.EXE

  • Finally run a full scan with Adaware.

  • Reboot your computer to go back to normal mode and post a new hijackthis log and the log from About Buster.

Hi Sam,

Ok...I am pretty sure I did everything correct. In your instructions though, after doing to Adaware scan, you didn't list to fix, I did it anyway, hope that's what I was supposed to do.

CWShredder didn't find anything, but Adaware seems to find CoolWeb stuff. Go figure. MFCDA.dll wasn't on the computer, but WinHp32 was. Anyway, I haven't tried IE, and won't until you say it should be OK to. I enabled EVERYTYHING on my startup, and now I have tons of stuff loading when I turn the computer on...one thing at a time though.

Here are the new logs:

It's looking pretty good. :tazz:

Fix this line with Hijackthis.

O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [MOSearch] C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\SYSTEM\MOSEARCH\BIN\MOSEARCH.EXE

Then delete this directory.

C:\PROGRAM FILES\COMMON FILES\SYSTEM\MOSEARCH

You can fix these lines with Hijackthis to control these unnecessary startup items, or you can do it through msconfig.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ViewMgr] C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Manager\ViewMgr.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WorksFUD] C:\Program Files\Microsoft Works\wkfud.exe

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [AIM] C:\PROGRAM FILES\AIM95\aim.exe -cnetwait.odl
O4 - Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\OSA.EXE

Go ahead and use IE. Do a little surfing around with it and see how it goes. Let me know of any problems that you are still having.

Glad you think things are looking good! One question though...before I try going onto IE, is there a way to set a computer 'waypoint' so that if things get messed up, I can revert back to those settings? Also, do you have any suggestions on how to protect the computer now that it is 'clean'. I am paranoid now. =)

Thanks!

That would be system restore. But before you set a system restore point you will want to flush out all the old(and infected) restore files.

Flush your system restore, this will delete any restore points that you have but it will also make sure that any malware hiding in system restore will be booted off.

Turn off System Restore:
  • On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
  • Click Properties.
  • Click the System Restore tab.
  • Check Turn off System Restore.
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.
Restart your computer, turn it back on and create a restore point.

Create a restore point:
  • Click Start and point to All Programs.
  • Mouse over Accessories, then System Tools, and select System Restore.
  • In the System Restore wizard, select the box next the text labeled "Create a
restore point" and click the Next button.
  • Type a description for your new restore point. Something like "After
cleanup". Click Create and you're done.

Ummmm....I don't know why, but I right clicked on My Computer/Properties, but there is no System Restore tab (I am using Windows ME). I tried searching for it, but didn't find it. Any ideas?

Try this...

1. Click Start, Settings, and then click Control Panel.
2. Double-click the System icon. The System Properties dialog box appears.

NOTE: If the System icon is not visible, click "View all Control Panel options" to display it.

3. Click the Performance tab, and then click File System.
4. Click the Troubleshooting tab, and then check Disable System Restore.
5. Click OK. Click Yes, when you are prompted to restart Windows.

This will flush out any infected data in your system restore files.

To enable Windows Me System Restore:

1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
2. Double-click System, and then click the Performance tab.
3. Click File System, and then click the Troubleshooting tab.
4. Uncheck Disable System Restore.
5. Click OK. Click Yes, when you are prompted to restart Windows.
