Hi! Thanks for your help.

I started with the WInfix, Aurua mess and I did all the steps in the read first section except down load the Trojan Horse software because there is a warning not to download two virus detection programs. So, I have just the Ewido Security Suite installed.

It ran and took out a lot of stuff. But now I still receive pop up ads and little message boxes.
Help...
I have listed my Ewido report first and it is followed by my HiJack this log.

Again thanks so much for you help!!!!

Hi Anthroanne and welcome to GeeksToGo! My name is Excal and I will be helping you.

I can see that you have some malware issues. This maybe a few step process in removing it. I encourage you to stick with it and follow my directions as closely as possible so as to avoid complicating the problem further.

DOWNLOAD PROGRAMS

Download and install CleanUp! Here
*NOTE* Cleanup deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders and does not make backups.

We will use this program later.

THE FIX

Please read this post completely, it may make it easier for you if you copy and paste this post to a new text document or print it for reference later.

1. Click this link to be sure you can view hidden files.

2. Ensure you are NOT connected to the internet.

3. Reboot into safe mode.

Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

4. Go to Start->Run and type in services.msc and hit OK. Then look for Windows Overlay Components and double click on it. Click on the Stop button and under Startup type, choose Disabled.

5. Open up and run Ewido:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • During the scan when it ask if you want to clean the first file, put a check in the lower left corner of the box that says "Perform action on all infections" then choose clean and click OK
  • When the scan is finished, look at the bottom of the screen and click the Save report button.
  • Save the report to your desktop
Close Ewido

6. Close all browsers, windows and unneeded programs.

7. Open HiJack and do a scan.

8. Put a Check next to the following items:

Dear Excal, Thanks!

I had to exit explorer and re-run eqin virus software again because I couldn't log back on this site to see your answer. I do have another saved log from that scan - it removed 5 items. Did you want to see that now?

Also, I have cable modem. I will have to unplug my modem box to do this - will that be ok?
Thanks Anne

So sorry Excal - I PM'd you - oops. I didn't mean to. Please forgive me!

I will be off line while I do your fix.

Thanks so much for your help. My apologies again. Mia Culpa!

Dear Excal -
Wow! What a job. Sure glad I had some Starbuck's before I started this!

Well, the computer seems ( :) ) ok, but I've only been on-line for a few minutes. Maybe you licked this one (with mighty sword?)! :tazz: (Sorry couldn't resist.. I know you get it ALL the time, right??)

OK here's the serious stuff. First the Active Scan. I didn't do anything - like send it to the "repairer", because I was afraid of deleting something I shouldn't. The fresh HiJack This scan follows.

(oh, I also saved the off-line scans too, in case you need them - just let me know)

Oh, and I wasn't able to delete the 023- Service: Windows Overlay Components - Unknown owner- C:\WINDOWS\bgxwdte.exe because it wasn't there when I did the HJT scan. I think it might have been removed when I had to shut down last time and run the ewido.

Thanks again!

Hi,

Wow looks much better!!

Actually I haven't heard that in a long time :tazz: so it was funny...lol

Launch Notepad, and copy/paste the box below into a new text file. Save it as fixme.reg (make sure that Save as Type is set at "All Files") on your Desktop. Ensure there is no space at or above REGEDIT 4.

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\WINDOWS\CURRENTVERSION\INTERNET SETTINGS\ZONEMAP\DOMAINS\ARCHIVIOSEX.NET]

[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\WINDOWS\CURRENTVERSION\INTERNET SETTINGS\ZONEMAP\DOMAINS\SGRUNT.BIZ]

Locate fixme.reg on your Desktop and double-click on it. You will receive a prompt similar to: "Do you wish to merge the information into the registry?". Answer "Yes" and wait for a message to appear similar to "Merged Successfully".

Just a few random bad files and folders to clean up.

Please remove the following folders using Windows Explorer (if present):

C:\DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS\HP_ADMINISTRATOR\FAVORITES\1111
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\cache32dsrf4535dfs

  • Open HiJackThis
  • Click on the configure button on the bottom right
  • Click on the tab "Misc Tools"
  • Click on "Delete File on Reboot"
  • Navigate to this file - C:\WINDOWS\abiuninst.htm
  • Double click on that file.
  • HJT asks you if you want to reboot, now. Click "yes".
Post back when you finish and tell me how your computer is running :)

Hi Excal,
Well, I did as instructed and I did not receive any pop up ads and the strange 1111 folder on my favorite list has finally been removed. But, my computer booted up strangely.

The Windows Welcome screen seemed to hang and then I could see the little gif boxes for the bottom task bar show up while the Windows Welcome screen was still showing. Hmm. ideas?

Here is another HJT file for you -

huh? lol (slowly put the coffee down!!)

You can fix these, it just takes them out of startup and saves some resources :tazz:

open Hijackthis and do a scan. Please check off the following items:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [iTunesHelper] C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunesHelper.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Reminder] "C:\Windows\Creator\Remind_XP.exe"
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime

click FIX CHECKED then close Hijackthis

reboot

Thanks Excal!

The system is working wonderfully!

:tazz: No more coffee for me tonight.

Let me ask you this - when I was working in safe mode, I did see the service pac 2 displayed in white text on my screen. Does that mean I already have the Windows Service Pac 2 or is this something that pops up when you are in the safe mode? I ask because I read on the website that you guys recommend the service pac 2 when your computer is free of the this nasty bug.

Am I likely to encounter this again?

Thank you ... thank you... thank you!

Hey Anne :)

you do indeed have Service Pack 2! and its ok. We do recommend that you get it after you get cleaned, but you possible already had it and didn't realize it....lol

Are you going to encounter an infection again, possibly. These little buggers come out with new stuff everyday, so all of us who are fighting the good fight are usually a step behind. But you can prevent the most of it by watching where you are surfing, not opening attached files in emails, don't download programs you are unsure of and most of all keep all you program up to date! I would also suggest switching browsers to Firefox (beware of drinking coffee when surfing, could lead to bad descions!...:tazz:)

here are some more suggestions, if you have any questions, please ask :)

Great job, it appears your computer is clean :)

Ensure you rehide your “hidden files and folders” back to the way they were.

Now that your system is Malware Free, it is important to reset your system Restore. Click Here to learn how to.

I recommend that you Defrag your computer before setting your Restore points:

Go to start>all programs>accessories>system tools>Disk Defragmentor Make sure it set to the proper drive (default should be your main driver) and click on defragment

Might I suggest the following Free Spyware programs, if you don't already have them, for added security, you can download them at the following links. These programs work great for detection:

Ad-aware SE
Spybot S&D
Microsoft Anti-Spyware

If you are unhappy with your current antivirus and want to replace it or if you dont already have one, I suggest one of these free programs:
*Note - do not use more than one anti-virus program as it will more than likely cause conflict.

AVG
Avast
AntiVir

The following free programs are great for prevention:

SpywareBlaster 3.4
Spywareguard
IE/Spyad

A Firewall is a must! Here are 3 good free versions:
(do not have more than one firewall running on your system)

Sygate
Kerio
ZoneLabs

There are other options other than Internet Explorer for a browser, which some say have better security. Two of them are:

Firefox
Opera

If you decide to keep Internet Explorer, This site is a great source for tightening up security on It's settings.

Make sure that you keep your Operating System and IE updated with the latest Critical Security Updates from Microsoft...they usually come out once a month, on the 2nd Tuesday of each month.

Be sure and give the Temp folders a cleaning out now and then as well, Make sure after you clean your Temp files to empty out your Recycle bin as well.
For ease use the following program:

Cleanup
Run "Cleanup" and when it has finished, Reboot

To help prevent future spyware installations/infections, please read the Anti-Spyware Tutorial and use the tools provided. Also read How I got Infected

Thanks Excal!

Now that I'm clean I don't know what to do! (besides not drink any more coffee).

Thanks for all your good advise and have some additional questions.

I would like to change my web browser, but most all of the secure web site that I trade files with (yes... the dreaded file transfer) state that you must have Win Exp to operate effectively. Now whether that's true.. I don't know. In addition, I would like to keep my firewall up (have Norton now), but can't get on the internet with it on with my cable modem. So I have to keep it off while I am on-line and it prevents me from downloading the instruction files I need for my work. Now, I do put the firewall back up when I am done on the internet, but the damage has probalbly already been done. (?) I figure it at least stops anyone from putting files on my computer and telling it what to do while I'm off line. I hope this was a correct assumption. If there is a work around I'd love to try it.

And why am I trading these files? Ugh. Well, in my spare time while doing my dissertation research I am moonlighting as a secret shopper. This industry is totally on-line, which is nice, but means that I must upload all my reports and down load their instructions for each job that I do. Although they say their sites are "secure" it sure didn't stop this mess from putting false links in their questionnaire files on line.

I never accept a file from someone I don't know and would love to be able to scan the files before they are loaded, but don't know how or whether I have that capacity.

By the way, I should tell you of an interesting side effect of running the ewido. Everytime the alert sounded, my greyhound ran into the room and stared at my CPU. He was quite "verclemped" until I turned the sound off. But it was sure funny. Maybe a greyhound disclaimer should be provided? What do you think?

Best,
Anne

Changing you web browser does not mean you get rid of IE. You have to keep IE to get all your windows updates, which we both know are important. I am not sure if you HAVE to use IE, but you can always try firefox, and if it don't work, you can either uninstall it, or just use IE for work.

In addition, I would like to keep my firewall up (have Norton now), but can't get on the internet with it on with my cable modem. First let me say UGHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!! Now that I got that out....lol. Having you firewall off is very bad, as you probally know deep inside :). 2 things u can do. 1) contact norton and explain the situation and they might be able to give you some tweaks around it. 2) uninstall norton and go with a diffrent firewall. I would highly suggest contacting Norton first  If you firewall is off when you are on line, the bad guys will eventually get you :)

I never accept a file from someone I don't know and would love to be able to scan the files before they are loaded, but don't know how or whether I have that capacity.

You may have another coffee for doing this
On my antivirus (AVG free edition :)) i can download a file to my desktop, then right clikc on it, and it will give me the option to scan it. Make a document and put it on your dekstop and see if you have that option.

lol, thats comedy. When I am on yahoo, and someone "buzzes" me, its sounds like a door bell. Well my crazy dogs barks likeheck and runs to the door, everysingle time. The funny thing is I don't even have a door bell....lol

Ok Excal, duely chagrinned at my naivete with computers and my firewall. (hmm. boy my spelling has gotten atrostoish (vbg).

Do you think it will be ok for me to crash now (oh me - not my computer) for the night and complete your recommendations in the morning? Despite coffee - my eyes are dropping. Is there something I should do now before I go ?

Anne and Jinx the greyhound (who is already sleeping).
