hmmmm odd
what about safe mode can you boot to that ?
rebbot the computer and hold down the ctrl key or keep tapping
F8 as soon as it starts to boot

safe mode does not give me windows-just blank blue screen with mouse arrow

ok at the c:> scanreg.exe /fix enter
it will run through a few screens then say registry repaired. Press enter then press ctrl + alt + delete keys together to reboot.

If this runs then after the reboot
try the regedit again. Has the screen changed?
I am sorry But I have to break for about 30mins - Dinner time

i tried the regedit again and got the same reults with=
L:system specifies the location of the system.data file.
R:user specifies the location of the user.data file
C FILENAME2 specifies the file to create the registry frm
etc

i don't think it is an upgrade because i remember reading something like clean w98 install would that be correct or some else

it tried to go into safe mode-it said safe mode in all four corners- then the usual message said windows is running in safe mode-pressed enter then strange in the two top corners the words safe mode remained and in the bottom two corners the words disapeared. [B]the mouse pointer is enlarged
