:) ARGHH!!!!!!!!! Now when I reboot into safe mode, my desktop will not load. My user name comes up, I double click on it and then a black screen comes, then a box which asks if I want to continue with safe mode, I click yes and the box disappears and NOTHING HAPPENS!! Any idea what causes this - completely new problem. WHen I go back to normal mode, everything is fine. :tazz:

Safe mode still not working - tried 3 times. How do I know if there are any Vundo things left. I deleted off the desktop and emptied recycle bin, also checked C drive and nothing vundo related appears. Any other ways I should check??

Thanx

Try it this way:

1. Click Start, click Run, type msconfig in the Open box, and then click OK.

2. On the General tab, click Selective Startup, and then clear the Process System.ini File, Process WIn.ini File, and Load Startup Items check boxes. You cannot clear the Use Original Boot.ini check box.

3. On the Services tab, select the Hide All Microsoft Services check box, and then click Disable All.

4. Click OK, and then click Restart to restart your computer.

5. After Windows starts, determine whether the symptoms still occur.

Note Look closely at the General tab to make sure that the check boxes that you cleared are still cleared. Continue to step 6 if none of the check boxes are selected. If the Load System Services check box is the only disabled check box, your computer is not clean-booted. If additional check boxes are disabled and the issue is not resolved, you may require help from the manufacturer of the program that places a check mark back in Msconfig.

If none of the check boxes are selected, and the issue is not resolved, you may have to repeat steps 1 through 5, but you may also have to clear the Load System Services check box on the General tab. This temporarily disables Microsoft services (such as, Networking, Plug and Play, Event Logging, and Error Reporting) and permanently deletes all restore points for the System Restore utility. Do not do this if you want to retain your restore points for System Restore or if you must use a Microsoft service to test the issue.

6. Click Start, click Run, type msconfig in the Open box, and then click OK.

7. On the General tab, select the Process System.ini File check box, click OK, and then click Restart to restart the computer. If the issue continues, the issue is with an entry in your System.ini file. If the issue does not continue, repeat this step for the Process Win.ini File, Load Startup Items, and Load System Services check boxes until the issue occurs. After the issue occurs, the last item that you selected is the item where the issue is occurring.

Note Microsoft strongly recommends that you do not use System Configuration Utility to modify the Boot.ini file on your computer without the direction of a Microsoft support engineer. Doing so may make your computer unusable.

can you do this for me please:

Go to start then run. Copy and paste this in:

regedit /e c:\safeboot.txt "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SafeBoot"

No open My computer, then Cdrive.

In there you will see a file called safeboot.txt, please copy and paste that on to this post.

Thanks,

Looks as if the problems is with the system.ini - that's what I get from using the diagnostics you provided.

Thanks

Please download and unzip RegSearch to your desktop.

Open the RegSearch folder and double click RegSearch.vbs. Allow it to run.
Note: if your Antivirus or another program prompts about running a script file, allow the script to run.

copy and paste this in: vds then hit "ok"

RegSearch will "disappear" but it is actually searching the registry for that entry.

Copy and paste what it finds into a Notepad file.

Launch Notepad, and copy/paste the box below into a new text file. Save it as safefix.reg (make sure that Save as Type is set at "All Files") on your Desktop. Ensure there is no space at or above REGEDIT 4.

Hey hey it worked - safe mode is workin fine again. You are great :tazz:

While I was online tonigh, my McAfee picked up this runftp.dll file that we have been trying to defeat and wanted to delete it and I think it was successful. I ran another Hijackthis log to see if the system looks clean.

See what you think:

Hi debbie,

everything looks great.

I only need you to fix that 020 line in Hijackthis.

O20 - Winlogon Notify: runftp - C:\WINDOWS\Help\starter\runftp.dll (file missing)

I also wonder if you mind doing something for me. What we think happened is that last reg fix I gave you had a key in it. we believe that it might have been corrupted. WOuld you mind putting that key back in so we can see if it was indeed a corrupted key? (in all actuality we would be putting an uncorrupted key in)

Launch Notepad, and copy/paste the box below into a new text file. Save it as safe2.reg (make sure that Save as Type is set at "All Files") on your Desktop. Ensure there is no space at or above REGEDIT 4.

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SafeBoot\Minimal\vds]
@="Service"

Locate safe2.reg on your Desktop and double-click on it. You will receive a prompt similar to: "Do you wish to merge the information into the registry?". Answer "Yes" and wait for a message to appear similar to "Merged Successfully".

reboot into safe mode please

if successful, reboot into normal. then reboot into safe again to make sure.

Let me know please

Thanks,

:tazz:

Thanks for doing that :)

Great job, it appears your computer is clean :tazz:

Ensure you rehide your “hidden files and folders” back to the way they were.

Now that your system is Malware Free, it is important to reset your system Restore. Click Here to learn how to.

I recommend that you Defrag your computer before setting your Restore points:

Go to start>all programs>accessories>system tools>Disk Defragmentor Make sure it set to the proper drive (default should be your main driver) and click on defragment

Might I suggest the following Free Spyware programs, if you don't already have them, for added security, you can download them at the following links. These programs work great for detection:

Ad-aware SE
Spybot S&D
Microsoft Anti-Spyware

If you are unhappy with your current antivirus and want to replace it or if you dont already have one, I suggest one of these free programs:
*Note - do not use more than one anti-virus program as it will more than likely cause conflict.

AVG
Avast
AntiVir

The following free programs are great for prevention:

SpywareBlaster 3.4
Spywareguard
IE/Spyad

A Firewall is a must! Here are 3 good free versions:
(do not have more than one firewall running on your system)

Sygate
Kerio
ZoneLabs

There are other options other than Internet Explorer for a browser, which some say have better security. Two of them are:

Firefox
Opera

If you decide to keep Internet Explorer, This site is a great source for tightening up security on It's settings.

Make sure that you keep your Operating System and IE updated with the latest Critical Security Updates from Microsoft...they usually come out once a month, on the 2nd Tuesday of each month.

Be sure and give the Temp folders a cleaning out now and then as well, Make sure after you clean your Temp files to empty out your Recycle bin as well.
For ease use the following program:

Cleanup
Run "Cleanup" and when it has finished, Reboot

To help prevent future spyware installations/infections, please read the Anti-Spyware Tutorial and use the tools provided. Also read How I got Infected
