I recently plugged in my PS2 to my PC monitor (21' CRT) thru a convertor. An immediate thingI noticed, as compared to my TV, was far less jaggies and an apparent increase in resolution. It was particularly noticeable when I put in Gran Turismo 4 (a game of 1040i capability), and as if by magic, the jaggies had all but disappeared and curves looked like almost perfect curves instead of the connect-the-dots arcs I am used to.

Is my inncoent, three year old monitor acting as an HD display?

Your monitor is capable of a higher resolution and refresf rate than yout television. The television res will be 800x600 usually so the increase in resolution is what you are seeing.
