Hi,
Have followed your preparation info and ewido cleared out Psguard which no longer shows at all. All Ad-Aware, Spy-bot, MS Antispyware indicate clear.
Norton shows W32.desktophijack, C://Winnt/System32/wininet.dll infected but since ewido scan and fix does not regenerate PSGuard.
Please help to finish off the remaining problem/problems.

Download smitRem.exe and save the file to your desktop.
Double click on the file to extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

Next, please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:

• Restart your computer
• After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
• Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
• Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

Run Ewido:

• Click on scanner
• Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
• NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.
• You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
• If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
• DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
• If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
• When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
• Save the report to your desktop

Close Ewido

Next go to Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Web > Uncheck "Security Info" if present.

Reboot the PC and post a fresh HJT log alon with Ewido scan report and the smitfilex.txt log.

Hi There,

Followed your advice and wininet.dll has been replaced successfully, Norton scan now shows clear.

The report of scan by Ewido also shows clear and blank. Include short report on 'ShudderLTD' and reports you asked for, no Ewido as blank.

Scan with Spy-Bot still shows 10 No. registry entries designated Smitfraud-C,in the form

HKU\S-1-5-21-'Etc'\Software\MS\Windows\CurrentVersion\IE Settings\ZoneMap\Domains\www.niger.ru\*!=W=4

The other sites are :- bin.words.cc, crl.thawte.com, dl.ad-ware.cc, new.8ad.com, s13.remove.cc,
s2.kav.cc, terra.hcworld.com, tracking.allposters.com, www.6o9.com.

All these sites had been put into the Restricted Sites Zone as and when I found any reference to them while
trying to get my desktop back from total lockout by a combination of Trojan.DesktopHijack, Trojan.DesktopHijack.C
W32.DesktopHijack, Trojan.DesktopHijack.C plus Puper trojans and most probably others which I wasn't able to record.

I am not sure what theses entries remaing mean, advice would be appreciated and thank you for your time and consideration.

The entries found by Spybot must be false positives. Since you have placed them in the restricted zone, there is no problem with that. I will later give you a tool to better manage your restricted zone items.

ShudderLTD is related to PS Guard and smitfraud infection. The tool searches for the entries and removes them.


Your logs look clean !!!!

Hi,

That is splendid, think I have learnt my lesson from this exercise and will take these threats seriously now, the feeling when the screen goes black with the false messages displayed is not one I wish to repeat!

I am not aware of any other problems with the computer but any advice as to how to make sure it is optimised would be gratefully received.

Let us clean up your PC a little bit.

Delete the following programs and the associated folders, which you downloaded during the cleaning up process -

smitrem.exe


Uninstall Ewido as it is a trial product and the trial period will expire shortly. Conflicts can arise between multiple anti-virus programs and can severely hamper the performance of the PC.

After this, please visit Windows security and critical updates and get all the updates and patches and install them on your PC.

Reboot the PC and post a fresh HJT log.

Hi There,

Sorry for delay in responding, but all went ok with deleting Smitrem and Ewido and after over 4 hours of downloading and installing Windows updates and patches, everything appeared to be alright until attempting to go on internet to send log. Update had altered services file which was being blocked by Zone Alarm. Then intermitent 'out of Memory error, Line 90, Internet Explorer' but this doesn't appear to stop any process from running now.

I attach HJT log, and fervently hope that your analysis confirms that we have managed to beat the intruders!

Once again thanks for your guidance, and I hope that it has added to the knowledge base of problems and solutions which can help in answering others plea for help as positively.

I would recommend the following steps to keep your PC clean –

PREVENTIVE MEASURES FOR FUTURE

Operating System
1. Keep the Windows and Internet Explorer updated with the latest fixes. These fixes are available free from Microsoft. Click on Tools in the IE menu bar and then on Windows update. You can also use the following links

Windows security and critical updates
Internet Explorer security and critical updates

Also ensure that automatic updates are enabled for faster updation of the system.
(Right click on My Computer on your desktop, properties and Automatic Updates tab.


Anti-Virus Software
2. Keep your Anti-virus program updated with the latest definitions. Some of the common anti-virus programs in use are :

Norton Anti-Virus
McAfee Anti-Virus
AVG Anti-Virus --- freeware
Avast Home Edition --- freeware

Use only one anti-virus program as multiple such programs can create conflicts between themselves and severely hamper the performance of your PC.


Firewall
3. You should also have a good firewall. Here are 3 free ones available for personal use:
Sygate Personal Firewall, Kerio Personal Firewall, ZoneAlarm


Internet Browsers
4. Have robust explorer settings. It is preferable to use an internet browser other that IE as most of the malware is targetted at IE. In case you prefer to use IE, then download a list of innocent looking but harmful websites from IE-Spyad and install it on ur PC. IE-SPYAD puts over 5000 sites in your internet explorer's restricted zone, so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't really innocent at all.

Some alternate browsers I suggest are Firefox Mozilla Browser and Opera

Ensure that Security level, irrespective of whichever browser you use, is set at Medium or higher, restrict the usage of cookies and activeX components.


Spyware Protection
5. Have a wall of protection against spyware / adware by installing SpywareBlaster and SpywareGuard.

SpywareBlaster and SpywareGuard are by JavaCool and both are free programs.
SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed and consumes no system resources.
SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation and browser hijack attempts. Both have free ongoing updates.


Spyware Removers
6. Install programs for scanning for malware and uninstalling them. Two of the best programs, both are freeware, are :

Spybot Search & Destroy - A powerful tool which can search and annhilate nasties that make it onto your system. Now with an Immunize section that will help prevent future infections.

AdAware SE Personal Edition - Another very powerful tool which searches and kills nasties that infect your system. AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy compliment each other very well.


Regular Maintenance of PC
7. Finally, invest some time for regular maintenance of your PC. Delete the temporary Internet files, temporary files, cookies etc. Click on Start button, Programs, Accessories, System Tools and run the program Disk Cleanup. Follow the instructions.

An alternate freeware software which can be used is CleanUp.

Keep your Registry clean. My favourite software is Registry First Aid. This is not a freeware but a trial version can be downloaded.
