I've done most steps and was finally able to get some functionality back, although the icon for Internet Explorer was removed from my desktop and now when I try to even run explorer, I get a popup from AVG saying there's a virus detected. No matter what I press, I'm left with no Internet Explorer. I'm posting this from Firefox.

The two main problems seem to be 'se.dll. and 'idrhcxty.exe' They are both in the AVG vault in MANY places, but ares till problematic to my system. I would also like to get back my Internet Explorer icon if at all possible.

Hi tpwinn and welcome to the Geeks to Go Forums.

My name is Trevuren and I will be helping you with your log.

1. Go to Geeks to Go
. Click on My Controls at the top right hand corner of the window. (make sure you have signed in first)
. In the left hand column, click "View Topics"
. If you click on the title of your post, you will be taken there

2. Also, while at the My Controls page, check the box to the right of your post and then scroll down.
.Where it says "unsubscribe" click the pull-down menu and select "immediate email notification"

3. You have a version of the About:Blank infection.

1. Download CWShredder

If you are using anything other than Windows xp you may need a zip program.
Please download the evaluation version of
Winzip.

2. Download SpSeHjfix.zip to the desktop.
  • Then right click on the desktop and select new >folder, name it spfix
  • Unzip SpSeHjfix.zip into the new folder.
3. Disconnect from the net and Close ALL OPEN PROGRAMS.
  • Run 'SpSeHjfix'. and click on "Start Disinfection".
  • When it's finished it will reboot your machine to finish the cleaning process.
  • The tool creates a log of the fix which will appear in the folder.
If it doesn't find any of the SE files or any hidden reinstallers it will say system clean and not go on to next stage.

4. Once it is finished, run CWShredder - Hit The FIX button!

5. Reboot and post a new HJT log and the log that was created by 'SpSeHjfix'.

Warning Note: On a few occasions it has been reported that after using the SPSEHjfix you cannot open Internet Explorer. To fix this, go into Control Panel >Internet Options >Programs & press reset web settings, then you can set your home page to what you want on the general tab.

Regards,

Trevuren

Your log is starting to look pretty good but I do have some reservations and will await your response before continuing:

1. Do you really need the program "LogMeIn". It uses up a lot of resources and requirestotal accessability to the net. If not I recommend you uninstall it through Add/Remove programs, then DELETE the folder using Windows Explorer and Reboot.

2. Then post a fresh HJT log.

3. The second item is a program called "Image Release" which is running as an Added Service (023) item. Do you know anything about this program?

Hi Trevuren,

I know about both of these programs and they are both kind of necessary.

LogMeIn is the service for the remote control software I use to connect to the computer when I am away.

The ImageRelease is a program used to ftp files.

If those are the only issues left, then I think we are clean as far as mal/spyware.

One last question. Do you know how to restore the Internet Explorer icon to the desktop?

Thanks a ton for all your help. I was at a standstill on those last few buggers.

1. Press (Windows Key + E)

2. In the left hand pane, navigate to C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer and click on that folder

3. Locate the "E" "iexplore.exe icon. and right click on it.

4. Chose Send to>>Desktop as Shortcut. And its done.
========================================

Congratulations, your log shows that your SYSTEM IS CLEAN

There are a few things you must do once you are completely clean:

1. Re-hide your System Files and Folders to prevent any future accidents.

2. Download the .exe format of Cleanup by Steven Gould from :HERE
  • A window will open and choose SAVE, then DESKTOP as the destination.
  • On your Desktop, click on Cleanup40.exe icon.
  • Then, click RUN and place a checkmark beside "I Agree"
  • Then click NEXT followed by START and OK.
  • A window will appear with many choices, keep all the defaults as set when the Slide Bar to the left is set to Standard Quality.
  • Click OK
  • Finally click "CleanUp"
The program with probably ask you to reboot. If it doesn't, then REBOOT your system yourself.

3. Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files from the backup that Windows makes as no program is able to clean those files:

TO DISABLE SYSTEM RESTORE
  • Right-click "My Computer", and then left click "Properties".
  • Left click on "System Restore Tab"
  • Check box beside "Turn Off System Restore"
  • Left click on "Apply"
TO ENABLE SYSTEM RESTORE
  • Remove check mark from "Turn Off System Restore"
  • Click on "Apply"
Here are some tips to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future:

Make sure you keep your Windows OS current by visiting Windows update
regularly to download and install any critical updates and service packs. With out these you are leaving the backdoor open.

I strongly recommend installing the following applications:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
To protect yourself further:
  • Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
And also see TonyKlein's good advice
So how did I get infected in the first place? (My Favorite)

Trevuren

That's great news, except I've encountered a problem during this last phase and I still have one unresolved issue from before.

1.
After using cleaner, my Internet Explorer is wacked out. I have none of the drop down menus )File, Tools, etc) and things are rearranged on the toolbars.

2.
I still have the message that my security settings are preventing ActiveX controls when I know for a fact I have all the proper settings. This is preventing me from updating via Windows update.

If we can get these last 2, I think we're in the clear.

Thanks again for all your help.

First try this:

Is your desktop background hijacked also then? If it is, then do this also:

Right click on http://www.greyknigh...pairDesktop.reg and download that file. Double click on it and click on Yes when it asks you if you want to merge it into the registry. Once that's done, restart your computer.

Login as usual and now right click on your Desktop and go to Properties. Next go to Desktop tab->Customize Desktop button->Web tab. Uncheck everything listed there. Then delete all the entries listed except for 'My Current Home Page'. Click OK and OK.
