I'm new here and hope you can help me.

I tried an upgrade of my motherboard and cpu and think that I might have bitten off more than I can chew! I bought an Athlon 64 3000+ cpu and an Albatron K8X800 motherboard. What a steep learning curve ...... things seem to be working ok (to a point), but the machine does not appear to be operating as fast as I imagined it might. I recently heard somewhere that I have to go into the bios and tell the system the speed of the front side bus. I am out of my depth here and hope that someone can tell me how I do that. I have loaded just the standard defaults in the bios.

Another problem with it is that when i instal windows, I don't get the option when I put the cd in, for it to boot from cd if I hit a key. It just goes straight in and starts booting. If I start the instal, when it gets to the part where the machine needs to reboot, it reboots but goes back to the start of the instalation. At that point, I go into the bios and tell it to boot from the hd and all is well. Any ideas, please?

Also, does it matter if my slowest cd drive is the master?

The default FSB speed of this motherboard should be 200mhz, it allows adjustment up to 300, but that's only for overclocking. 200mhz is the correct setting. The memory speed also needs to be matched to the speed of your memory, or just set it to auto.

Why do you think your system is too slow? Have you tried a benchmark like SiSoft Sandra? To download Click Here.

To change the boot order, enter BIOS and look at the advanced menu. There you should find options for boot order. You'll probably want floppy, cd-rom, hard disk in that order. Then if you have a bootable CD or floppy inserted your system will boot off it, if not it'll boot using the hard drive.

Ideally, you want your boot drive to be the fastest in your system. However, it won't affect performance much. The exception to this would be having drives on the same channel with different IDE speeds (i.e. ATA66, and ATA100). An IDE channel is only as fast as it's slowest component.
