For a couple of weeks now, I've been getting various popups.

1) First a dialog box will popup (I'm looking at one right now), saying "Notice: If your computer has been running slower than usual, it may be infected with Adware or Spyware. Click OK to scan your computer now."

Regardless of whether I click OK or Cancel, a browser will then open with either Winfixer or Winantivirus 2005.

2) At other times, I will just get random other popups advertising for stuff like software, vacations, etc.

I went to the preliminary tests page, as directed above, and performed every step starting with CleanUp!, right on through to Spybot S&D. In the last few steps, where there are several options, I did the following: Trend Housecall online scan, and Trojan Hunter.

Afterwards, I ran Windows update, but already had all Criticals.

I currently have Norton SystemWorks 2004 with a recently lapsed subscription (2-3mths), and Norton Firewall. I've also been running Windows Firewall at the same time, apparently stupidly.

The popups seem to be advancing, and after doing all the above, they seem to have been rolled back to their earlier stage, when I was only getting type 1 from above.

During the scans, Spybot detected 59 BackWeb Lite instances. It did not flag these by default, but I deleted them anyway, after reading on several other forums that it was generally a good idea to do so. Also, Housecall deteced a Dloader.i virus, which it could not clean. I deleted this through Housecall.

This has been going on for about 2 weeks, and the ONLY software changes I can think of during that time are as follows: 1) I installed Google Earth, and 2) Limewire appears to have updated itself to a newer version (1.4.8, I believe).

I have just uninstalled Limewire, and restarted, and just now gotten type 1 popup from above.

Hi Sam, My name's Simon. Thanks for the help.
I followed your instructions above. If the new Hijackthis log shows I'm clean, do you have any idea where I might have gotten infected? Do either or the possibilities I mentioned earlier make sense?
And also, what should I do regarding my now-defunct Norton, and dual firewall?
I don't really have the money to get a new Norton subscription, so I was thinking AVG and Windows firewall alone. Any oppinions?

PS: After doing your fix, the shortcut to Internet Explorer that I had on my quicklaunch bar has dissapeared. Any reason for this?

I'm seeing a lot of Vundo infections showing up in the past week or so. I don't know for sure where it comes from, but I can tell you that running Limewire greatly increases your risk for infection.

If Norton is expired and you want to get rid of it, check out the free version of Zone Alarm. It's a very good firewall.

I'm not sure why you lost your IE shortcut. I've never heard of that happening as a result of a Vundo Fix. It's an easy fix. Click on the IE desktop icon and drag it down to your Quick Launch bar.

Windows firewall is minimal protection and it's better than nothing, but I do recommend a stronger firewall such as Zone Alarm, especially if you have a broadband connection.

Yes, that's right. Disable Windows firewall.

That's the thing about Norton, they share a lot of files. You should be able to get rid of all of them except the one that refers to Speed Disk. One way to find out for sure is to uninstall everything Norton, fix all of those lines with Hijackthis, and then just reinstall Norton Utilities.

Please run Panda Online Virus Scan

• Make sure it is set to clean automatically.
• There may be files that this scan will not remove.
• Please include that information in your next post.

Reboot and post a new hijackthis log and the info from your virus scan.

OK, below is my Pandascan log.

What I find interesting is that I ran it before I ever got help from you, and it didn't find the Vundo files. Now it has supposedly found them and fixed them, after I fixed them myself with your instructions.

However, I don't see anything there about system.exe, although I don't know if it would turn up under that name. Also, Zone Alarm has been keeping me from accessing the internet until I allowed "Spooler Subsystem." Is this a problem?

While system.exe didn't show up Panda did find a couple viruses. I'd like to see what turns up with Ewido.

Please download Ewido Security Suite it is a trial version of the program.

• Install ewido security suite
• When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
• Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop double-click it.
• The program will now go to the main screen

You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.

• On the left hand side of the main screen click update
• Then click on Start Update

The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update ewido.

Once the updates are installed do the following:

• Click on scanner
• Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
• While the scan is in progress you will be prompted to clean files, click OK
• When it asks if you want to clean the first file, put a check in the lower left corner of the box that says "Perform action on all infections" then choose clean and click OK.
• Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
• Click Save report.
• Save the report .txt file to your desktop.

Now close ewido security suite.


Reboot your computer and post a new hijackthis log and the log from Ewido.

It removed the following:

It also removed a bunch of cookies, which I didn't bother posting.

How should I proceed from here? Did it get the stuff that PandaScan was unable to fix?
