*Sigh* The problems never cease... help me, before I chuck this machine out a high window!

I just did a clean install of Windows 2000 Pro on a new HD. It seems the CD Drive now decides which cd's to read, and which ones to ignore.

I've tried various disc's... from software installation to audio. I've updated the drivers, and the Hardware Wiz tells me the device is working properly and has the latest driver.

It read my webcam software install disc just fine, as well as all of the work involved with installing Win2k. I copied some stuff onto CD from my other PC.. first time I loaded it in, the drive read it just fine. Now it won't. Game software.. no luck.

What could the problem be, aside from the drive is just toasted?

Thanks for any help you can give.

By the way, it's an ASUS CRW2410A drive.

If you reinstalled you should always reinstall your chipset drivers, get the latest version. Also, I presume you reinstalled the software that came with the drive?

As far as the chipset drivers, I do believe I have the latest version. The software that came with the drive is LONG gone.. the drive itself is a tad on the old side. I'll go out on the web and see what I can find.

I still find it very strange that it will read some cd's and not others. Is this a common problem?

There are several different cd formats, each requiring it's own software to read and write, so yes, certainly.

I downloaded the updater from the ASUS website for my drive... and it says there are no new firmware updates available for that product.

Not sure where to go now.

Thanks for your help, by the way. I hope we can get to the bottom of this!

I just found and downloaded the most recent firmware and bios versions from the ASUS site. However, they are .afs files, and are not recognized by my machine.

:tazz:
