My brother's computer had Aurora/Nail.exe on it. I followed this post's procedures to get rid of it.

I'm just not sure if it's gone. The Active Scan I ran after doing everything still pops up a few items, one (A Better Internet) looks like Aurora. After I saw this I ran another HJT and the log is below. Can anybody give me a thumbs up (or down)? Thank you.

Here's the Active Scan log..............

Hello and welcome!

Not much left there.

Delete the following folders/files using Windows Explorer..

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\defaulttxt.dat
C:\PROGRAM FILES\Lycos
C:\DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS\BRETT.NEANDERTAL\FAVORITES\1111
C:\1.exe

After that empty recycle bin..

Next do this..
  • Please go to Jotti's malware scan
  • Copy and paste the following file path into the "File to upload & scan" box on the top of the page:
    • C:\Documents and Settings\Brett.NEANDERTAL\Desktop\Desktop\Buying and Selling Your Home Kit.exe
  • Click on the submit button
  • Please post the results in your next reply, along with a fresh HiJackThis log.

I had already deleted those two items. :tazz:

The system seems to be running great. I've run AVG Free and it found nothing. I've also run Microsoft AntiSpyware and it came up clean, also.

The only odd thing I've noticed is that at startup (about the time AIM loads) a "Run Time Error" occurs. It asks if you want to debug. I'll try reinstalling AIM and Microsoft Instant Messenger and see what happens with those errors.

Thanks!

Please RIGHT-CLICK HERE to download Silent Runner's.
  • Save it to the desktop.
  • Run Silent Runner's by doubleclicking the "Silent Runners" icon on your desktop.
  • You will see a text file appear on the desktop - it's not done, let it run (it won't appear to be doing anything!)
  • Once you receive the prompt All Done!, open the text file on the desktop, copy that entire log, and paste it here.
*NOTE* If you receive any warning message about scripts, please choose to allow the script to run.

I removed AIM and MSN Messenger from his computer. The "Run Time Error" didn't show up after I rebooted. :)

I'll reinstall both of those from newly downloaded sources. (I'll scan both with AVG before opening. :))

The computer seems fine now. :) Thank you so much for your help. :tazz:

You're welcome, it's great to help! :tazz:

Here's some tips for future to prevent spyware;

Detect and Remove Programs:
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
Prevention Programs:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed. (My favourite)
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
Other necessary Programs:
  • AntiVirus Program <= An AntiVirus program is a must! Whether it is a free version like AVG or Anti-Vir, or a shareware version like Norton or Kaspersky, this is a must have.
  • Firewall <= A firewall is definatley a must have. Two good free versions are Sygate and ZoneLabs.
  • More Secure Browser <= Internet Explorer is not the most secure and best browser. There are safer and better alternatives available. I recommend Firefox.
And also see TonyKlein's good advice;
So how did I get infected in the first place? (My favourite)
