Hello Chris and welcome to Geeks to Go

As an introduction, please note that I am not Superhuman, I do not know everything, but what I do know has taken me years to learn. I am happy to pass on this information to you, but please bear in mind that I am also fallible.

Please note that you should have Administrator rights to perform the fixes. Also note that multiple identity PC’s (family PC’s) present a different problem; please tell me if your PC has more than one individual’s setting.

Before we get underway, you may wish to print these instructions for easy reference during the fix, although please be aware that many of the required URLs are hyperlinks in the red names shown on your screen. Part of the fix may require you to be in Safe Mode, which will not allow you to access the internet, or my instructions!

You have quite a mixture of malware and Trojans that need to be eradicated. We have to deal with Qoologic first of all before tackling Aurora, so it will take a few posts minimum. Let’s see what we can do with the first sweep which will be a general tidy-up and a Qoologic ID task. Could I ask you not to choose italic as a font preference, it just makes the logs difficult to read, and believe they’re already tough enough.

The other thing I noticed in your log was that although you have startup files pointing to Norton Antivirus for updates, I can not see any running process. Have you lost or deleted the programme? If so, please download AVG as a replacement, I’ll include it’s URL in the downloads.

To start please download the following programmes, we will run them later. Please save them to a place that you will remember, I suggest the Desktop:

AVG ANTIVIRUS FREE EDITION
Killbox by Option^Explicit
CCleaner
Ewido Security Suite
Revised Nailfix Utility
Ad-Aware
Fix ABI

Click start on Fix ABI and let the tool scan and delete the ABI infection.

Go to Start>Run and type Services.msc then hit OK
Scroll down and find these services:

System Startup Service (SvcProc)
Command Service (cmdService)

When you find them, double-click on each. In the next window that opens, click the Stop button, then click on Properties and under the General Tab, change the Startup Type to Disabled. Now hit Apply and then OK.

Run HiJackThis. Click on None of the above, just start the program. Now, click on the Config button (bottom right), then click on Misc Tools, then click on Delete an NT Service a window will pop up. Enter this item into that field (copy and paste):

SvcProc
cmdService

Click OK.

It should pull up information about the service, when it asks if you want to reboot now click YES

Install Ewido Security Suite.
  • Install Ewido security suite
  • When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck..
    • Install background guard
    • Install scan via context menu
    • You will need to update Ewido to the latest definition files.
    • On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
    • Then click on Start Update.
  • The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
(the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update Ewido.
Ewido manual updates
Do NOT run a scan yet.

Please install Revised Nailfix Utility , unzip it to the desktop but please do NOT run it yet.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

For additional help in booting into Safe Mode, see the following site:

Safe Mode

Once in Safe Mode, please double-click on nailfix.exe.
Click "Next" in the setup, then make sure "Run Nailfix" is checked and click "Finish".
Your desktop and icons will disappear and reappear, and a window should open and close very quickly --- this is normal.

Launch Ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop, double-click it.
  • The programme will now open to the main screen.
  • When you run Ewido for the first time, you will get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
Now that the updates have been installed do the following:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • NOTE: During some scans with Ewido it is finding cases of false positives.
    • You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
    • If Ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
    • DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
    • If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
  • Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
  • Click Save report.
  • Save the report .txt file to your desktop and include it in your reply.
Now close Ewido security suite.

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

*Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard".

*Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "Yes" at the reboot now prompt..

If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run TheKillbox, click download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try TheKillbox again.

Now we must hide the files we revealed earlier by reversing the process, this is an important safeguard to stop important system files being deleted by accident.

There is almost certainly bound to be some junk (leftover bits and pieces) on your system that is doing nothing but taking up space. I would recommend that you run CCleaner. Install it, update it, check the default setting in the left-hand pane, Analyze, Run Cleaner. You may be fairly surprised by how much it finds. Also click Issues then Scan for issues – fix selected issues

Download Find Q.zip to your desktop

Find Q.zip

Extract the files inside to C:\ That will create a folder called Find Q , open it and run the batch file find q.bat

It must be extracted to C:\ or it might not function correctly

This will generate a log file; please post the entire contents of the log file here for me to see.

Post back a fresh HijackThis log and I will take another look. (3 logs in total).

Thanks for the reply Phil.

I think Norton was not showing in my running processes due to the fact that my original HJT log was ran in safe mode. I guess Norton is disabled in safe mode?

This computer does have two profiles however the second is rarely used and should not present problems.

I should also note that your nailfix link did not work, however I found a working link from a similar topic and used that to get the program.

Logs are listed below.

Hello again Chris

I take your point on scanning in safe mode, it hides quite a lot of things. Please only scan with HJT in normal mode; I need to see everything.

Well I ran FindQ because I could see it in your log. Ewido says it deleted it OK, but you now have a new Qoologic file in your log. Nail is still there and the SvcProc is live without a file – weird! It then gets weirder by showing a VX2 infection and cleaning it, which it has not done in the past. It strike me that Ewido has undergone some changes in the past few days.

I am going to hit the Qoologic file in this sweep.

Go to Start>Run and type Services.msc then hit OK
Scroll down and find this service:

System Startup Service (SvcProc)

When you find it, double-click on it.

SvcProc

Click OK.

It should pull up information about the service, when it asks if you want to reboot now click YES

Download Process Explorer

Run Process Explorer and find the Process in the list of Processes.
Select the process and click Process > Suspend.

This is the process: C:\WINDOWS\system32\ogodmw.exe

Leave Process explorer running with the process suspended.

Please open Killbox by Option^Explicit.

*Extract the programme to your desktop and double-click on its folder, then double-click on Killbox.exe to start the programme.
*In the Killbox programme, select the Delete on Reboot option.
*Copy the file names below to the clipboard by highlighting them and pressing Control-C:

C:\WINDOWS\Nail.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\zirzzn.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ogodmw.exe

*Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard".

*Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "Yes" at the reboot now prompt.

After the reboot , open HJT and do a scan, then close all other programmes leaving only HijackThis running. Place a checkmark against the following:

F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\Nail.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [winsync] C:\WINDOWS\system32\zirzzn.exe reg_run
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [wwzdli] C:\WINDOWS\system32\ogodmw.exe r
O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {9E248641-0E24-4DDB-9A1F-705087832AD6} - (no file)
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Java - {9E248641-0E24-4DDB-9A1F-705087832AD6} - (no file)
O23 - Service: System Startup Service (SvcProc) - Unknown owner - c:\windows\SvcProc.exe (file missing)

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Hi.

I have followed the above instructions, however there is no running process called "C:\WINDOWS\system32\ogodmw.exe" so I am unable to suspend it.

Also when using the Killbox tool, I copied the processes listed and selected 'paste from clipboard' however only "C:\WINDOWS\system32\zirzzn.exe" was entered into the drop down menu. Is this normal?

All listed entries in HJT log were fixed apart from "O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [wwzdli] C:\WINDOWS\system32\ogodmw.exe" which was not present.

thanks
Chris

ps. I should also mention that upon rebooting and logging into Windows an error message appears stating that nail.exe cannot be found and asks for me to search for it if needed.

Chris

Thanks for that. You've had some problems, don't worry, I am used to them.

Please can I see a fresh HJT log?

Thanks

Hello again Chris

Despite what you are being told, the HJT is showing both Nail and Qoologic – that is weird! Let me get rid of the 023 entry and Nail and then find the root of this Qoologic.

Go to Start>Run and type Services.msc then hit OK
Scroll down and find this service:

System Startup Service (SvcProc)

When you find it, double-click on it.

SvcProc

Click OK.

It should pull up information about the service, when it asks if you want to reboot now click YES

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\Nail.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [mbumwbp] C:\WINDOWS\system32\qngwip.exe r
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [winsync] C:\WINDOWS\system32\zirzzn.exe reg_run
O23 - Service: System Startup Service (SvcProc) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\svcproc.exe

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked.

Please install Killbox by Option^Explicit.

*Extract the programme to your desktop and double-click on its folder, then double-click on Killbox.exe to start the programme.
*In the Killbox programme, select the Delete on Reboot option.
*Copy the file names below to the clipboard by highlighting them and pressing Control-C:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\qngwip.exe
C:\WINDOWS\Nail.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\zirzzn.exe
C:\WINDOWS\svcproc.exe

*Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard".

*Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "Yes" at the reboot now prompt..

If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run TheKillbox, click download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try TheKillbox again.

Download:WinPFind

Right Click the Zip Folder and Select "Extract All"

Don't use it yet!

Restart in Safe Mode

From the WinPFind folder-> Doubleclick WinPFind.exe and Click "Start Scan"

It will scan the entire System, so please be patient!

One you see "Scan Complete"-> a log (WinPFind.txt) will be automatically generated in the WinPFind folder.

Restart normally and post the contents of WinPFind.txt

Post back a fresh HijackThis log and I will take another look.

There was no entry 'O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [mbumwbp] C:\WINDOWS\system32\qngwip.exe r' in HJT and no program ' C:\WINDOWS\system32\qngwip.exe' found by Killbox. I'm guessing this program constantly changes it's name to evade the clean up and is now called 'yunzqq.exe' as in the new HJT log. Is this correct?

Yes you are quite correct. Each time your system boots it changes certain aspects of its name. This type of virus falls into two categories, Epolvy and Qoologic.

Download Process Explorer

Run Process Explorer and find the Process in the list of Processes.
Select the process and click Process > Suspend.

This is the process: C:\WINDOWS\system32\yunzqq.exe

Leave Process explorer running with the process suspended.

Please open Killbox by Option^Explicit.

*Extract the programme to your desktop and double-click on its folder, then double-click on Killbox.exe to start the programme.
*In the Killbox programme, select the Delete on Reboot option.
*Copy the file names below to the clipboard by highlighting them and pressing Control-C:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\yunzqq.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\zirzzn.exe
C:\WINDOWS\chwygldlwx.exe
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\kwrkk.dll
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\mc-110-12-0000079.exe
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\notnnko.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\wtavzi.exe r
C:\Documents and Settings\Chris Seagrave\Application Data\Sskcwrd.dll
C:\Documents and Settings\Chris Seagrave\Application Data\Sskknwrd.dll

*Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard".

*Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "Yes" at the reboot now prompt.

After the reboot , open HJT and do a scan, then close all other programmes leaving only HijackThis running. Place a checkmark against the following:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [winsync] C:\WINDOWS\system32\zirzzn.exe reg_run
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [gjugof] C:\WINDOWS\system32\yunzqq.exe r
O16 - DPF: {205FF73B-CA67-11D5-99DD-444553540013} (CInstall Class) - http://adserver.shar...ver/Install.cab

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Using WQindows Explorer, have a look for this : C:\WINDOWS\pocqZ It looks bad to me, but what is it? Just a folder? Any files inside it?

Can you also suspend this process and delete it whilst suspended as you did to the first file: C:\WINDOWS\system32\wtavzi.exe

If you do see it as a process and can suspend it, please delete it whilst suspended.

process wtavzi.exe was not present and C:\WINDOWS\pocqZ is a lone file of type 'file' and size 1KB.

I have completed all of the above however after a restart I have scanned using HJT out of curiosity and the O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [winsync] C:\WINDOWS\system32\zirzzn.exe reg_run entry is back in there.
