To anyone who can help me:

Hi! I am a new user of geekstogo. At first, I was doubtful in signing up with an account, but after seeing the repeated friendly assitance everyone receives, I was hoping to be apart of the community.

I'm a new user to Hijack, and l2mfix, so I don't know much about logs, but recently my computer has been infected with Winfixer2005, and Trafficsurf.

I am normally aware of everything going on in my computer, and I usually know exactly what time I acquire the virus/ware. Recently, I left my computer on as I started to attend college, and as I came home, when I open up IE, the pop ups from Winfixer and Trafficsurf came out instantly, as I browsed my favorites links. Not only that, they show up even when I load up my home page on xanga.

At first, I ran SE and got rid of 40 objects, and went to Trend Micro, that didn't detect anything wrong. Second, I located the .pf file for Winfixer and deleted the two registered on my computer. However, it was too late. The spyware somehow installed itself on my computer, (Even after my repeated attempts of clicking no during the license agreement), and would reload everytime I restarted my computer.

I had a flash of ephinany and decided to go through all my .pf files and isolate all of the ones created on that day, or the previous day, deleting any that I was unfamiliar with. I ended up deleting 3 Rundll prefetch files and several other entries.

When I restart - still was there. So I ended up running System Recovery from 2 Days back. It worked.... only until I returned home again. AGAIN, I left my computer on as I attended school, and AGAIN these spyware came back up. I am 100% positive no one touches my computer while I am gone, and I only leave aim, trillian, and Msn on in the background.

I will post my l2mfix log. Please, if anyone could me (newbie with l2mfix and Hijack), I would greatly appreciate it. I saw some very happy people with their problems fixed and I hope to accompany them in the road of repair.

Thanks Admistrators!

- Tom Ray

Please download VundoFix.zip to your desktop.
  • Double-click VundoFix.zip and extract it to your C:\ directory.
  • Copy the instructions below and paste them into Notepad for reference.
    • All other windows need to be closed while doing this fix!
  • Navigate to the new folder C:\VundoFix
  • Double click on KillVundo.bat
    • When it starts running it will tell you that you need an active internet connection then ask you to press any key once you do.
  • Please press any key to continue.
  • Wait for HiJackThis to open.
  • When HiJackThis opens, click Do a system scan only. Place a check next to the following items, if found:

    O2 - BHO: MSEvents Object - {827DC836-DD9F-4A68-A602-5812EB50A834} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\gebcc.dll
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: gebcc - C:\WINDOWS\System32\gebcc.dll

  • Once they all have a check next to them, click the FIX CHECKED button, then close HiJackThis.
You will once again be prompted to press any key. Upon doing so this time you will receive a "Blue Screen Of Death". Don't worry, this is normal! Let the computer reboot. If it doesn't boot straight to windows, manually turn the computer off and then back on.

Once the computer is rebooted post a new HiJackThis log as well as the contents of vundofix.txt which can be found in this folder: C:\VundoFix

Thanks will do. Its running right now. All of my processes have been killed.

Second, I forgot to make one thing clear. I don't think WinFixer is actually installed on my computer. Instead, some other spyware, is linking me to it and generating pop ups so that I download it atm. The first time, I did have it installed, but after systems recovery/rollback, it got dispersed, but it is showing up again.

Alright. I'll let you know when I get both logs.

Edit:: It says cannot find c:\windows\dnsurl.dll
File not found: c:\windows\dnsurl.dll
The system cannot find the file xfind.txt
The system cannot find the file xfind.txt

//not sure if that's a good thing or not. Just letting you know before I reboot.

Edit:: Found Both strings. Will check and fix. Restarting soon.

Great job, it appears your computer is clean :tazz:

Ensure you rehide your “hidden files and folders” back to the way they were.

Now that your system is Malware Free, it is important to reset your system Restore. Click Here to learn how to.

I recommend that you Defrag your computer before setting your Restore points:

Go to start>all programs>accessories>system tools>Disk Defragmentor Make sure it set to the proper drive (default should be your main driver) and click on defragment

Might I suggest the following Free Spyware programs, if you don't already have them, for added security, you can download them at the following links. These programs work great for detection:

Ad-aware SE
Spybot S&D
Microsoft Anti-Spyware

If you are unhappy with your current antivirus and want to replace it or if you dont already have one, I suggest one of these free programs:
*Note - do not use more than one anti-virus program as it will more than likely cause conflict.

AVG
Avast
AntiVir

The following free programs are great for prevention:

SpywareBlaster 3.4
Spywareguard
IE/Spyad

A Firewall is a must! Here are 3 good free versions:
(do not have more than one firewall running on your system)

Sygate
Kerio
ZoneLabs

There are other options other than Internet Explorer for a browser, which some say have better security. Two of them are:

Firefox
Opera

If you decide to keep Internet Explorer, This site is a great source for tightening up security on It's settings.

Make sure that you keep your Operating System and IE updated with the latest Critical Security Updates from Microsoft...they usually come out once a month, on the 2nd Tuesday of each month.

Included in those updates is Windows XP Service Pack 2. Click Here
Since you're junkware free, the time to get it is NOW. Service Pack 2 is a MAJOR upgrade for XP. It adds numerous security and software patches, as well as new features and functionality. You will also be adding another layer of protection against future threats.

Be sure and give the Temp folders a cleaning out now and then as well, Make sure after you clean your Temp files to empty out your Recycle bin as well.
For ease use the following program:

Cleanup
Run "Cleanup" and when it has finished, Reboot

To help prevent future spyware installations/infections, please read the Anti-Spyware Tutorial and use the tools provided. Also read How I got Infected

Thanks. I have all three now. My friend suggested the Microsoft one earlier.

A new spyware seems to have popped up.. err.. it's actually a pop up.

The contents of the page are that the the title displays IE - Microsoft Internet Explorer.

The web address is : http://70.86.58.61/addating.ht.., I'll leave it like that so no one accidentally links to it.

The contents display "adultfriendfinder," and it has various ads all over the page.

Besides that.. I don't know how that got there. My comptuer has been going haywire lately.

I'll try to follow the steps you gave me, Thanks.

Edit:: Also I don't have enough free space to run Disk Defrag. I only have 8% while it requires 15%, should I run it anyways?

Edit:: Also, I can't run SP 2 for my computer for some reason... The spyware from previous encounters have rendered some abilities for Service Pack 2 on my computer nonnegotiable to me as the user. One - I cannot remove the pop up blocker and it disables some sites. Also my trillian isn't compatiable in checking my hotmail with the New Update. Other than that, thanks a lot! If you could, please give me any information you know about the Adultfinder pop up and how I can dismantle it.

Thank you,

Tom

Lets go hunting! :tazz:

The Temp folders should be cleaned out periodically as installation programs and hijack programs leave a lot of junk there. Download CleanUp! (Alternate Link if the main link does not work) and install it. Please Do not run yet.

Please download ewido security suite it is a trial version of the program.
  • Install ewido security suite
  • When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
  • Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop double-click it.
  • The program will now go to the main screen
You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
  • On the left hand side of the main screen click update
  • Then click on Start Update
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update ewido.
ewido manual updates

Reboot into safe mode.

Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Run CleanUp! and click on CleanUp! button. When it asks you if you want to logoff, click on Yes.

Open up and run Ewido:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • During the scan when it ask if you want to clean the first file, put a check in the lower left corner of the box that says "Perform action on all infections" then choose clean and click OK
  • When the scan is finished, look at the bottom of the screen and click the Save report button.
  • Save the report to your desktop
Close Ewido

Reboot into normal mode and please run this online virus scan: ActiveScan - Save the results from the scan!

Please post the Active scan log, Ewido Log and a fresh HiJackThis log. Let me know how your computer is running.

Ahh.. geeze man. You're too fast. Lol... Aw.. I'm already really tired lol. Okay lets see.. Hrmm.. I'll see if I can do all the rest soon. Man.. You must get tired from doing this all day. I see you online all the time.

I just wanted to say thanks though. You don't know how much this means for people like me. Gosh.. I hated Online Technical Assistance, but finally, someone knows what they're doing and does it efficiently and effectively.

You have my gratitude lol. =)

Second.. I clean up my temp folder all the time, yup yup... lets see what else. Oh.. yeah, argh. I hate going in safe mode, and I don't like active guards (which is good since you told me to uncheck those.)

Is the Trial version extendable? I mean.. if I have problems later on.. I would like to use it again. I hope the trial part is only for the Active guard and not detection.

I could probably find a way around it, but I don't wish to do things illeagly anymore lol.

Thanks for the help. I'll do all i can tonight and post up the logs. ^_^
