I have wasted two days trying to remove WinFixer from my computer. I have used AdAware, Trend Micro AntiSpyware, XoftSpy and Spybot Search & Destroy. They all locate and supposedly delete this Trojan, however, it will not go away. I’ve read a few of the posts on this and since I haven’t a clue what any of it means, here is a copy of my HijackThis log. Hope you can help and thanks in advance.

Please download VundoFix.zip to your desktop.
  • Double-click VundoFix.zip and extract it to your C:\ directory.
  • Copy the instructions below and paste them into Notepad for reference.
    • All other windows need to be closed while doing this fix!
  • Navigate to the new folder C:\VundoFix
  • Double click on KillVundo.bat
    • When it starts running it will tell you that you need an active internet connection then ask you to press any key once you do.
  • Please press any key to continue.
  • Wait for HiJackThis to open.
  • When HiJackThis opens, click Do a system scan only. Place a check next to the following items, if found:

    O2 - BHO: MSEvents Object - {827DC836-DD9F-4A68-A602-5812EB50A834} - C:\WINNT\Cursors\tcpeula.dll
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: tcpeula - C:\WINNT\Cursors\tcpeula.dll

  • Once they all have a check next to them, click the FIX CHECKED button, then close HiJackThis.
You will once again be prompted to press any key. Upon doing so this time you will receive a "Blue Screen Of Death". Don't worry, this is normal! Let the computer reboot. If it doesn't boot straight to windows, manually turn the computer off and then back on.

Once the computer reboots, please visit Panda and do an online scan. Save the scan report.

Post a new HiJackThis log as well as the contents of vundofix.txt which can be found in this folder: C:\VundoFix and the Panda scan report here

Panda also shut down part way through the scan for me also. Is there something else I should be doing?

:tazz: Can someone help me understand whether or not my system is now clear of WinFixer 2005? I followed the directions provided by tampabelle (thanks a million, tampabelle), but don't know if there are further steps I should be taking. Since I'm pretty much a novice at this, I really need your help!

Hi Gopi,

Since I have started working on your log, nobody else will step in to minimise confusion.

The Hijack This log you have posted in your previous reply is badly formatted.

Please run Hijack This and click on scan. Once the scan is complete. Click on Save log. The log will be saved and will also open in Notepad. In the toolbar of Notepad, click on Format. If the item "Wordwrap" is checked then uncheck it. Now copy and paste the entire text in your reply.

Thanks, Tampabelle. As I was reading through other posts today I came to realize the Herculean job you guys are doing and the confusion that could result if more than one person attempted to respond to my post.

Here's my new HJT log. Sorry about the previous confusion.

Tampabelle,

:tazz: Thanks a million!!!

I’m not aware of any particular issues with my PC, but am certainly open to the dusting and brooming. Sounds like it could actually be fun! :) Just let me know what I need to do.

I got this computer last September and as you may have noticed, I never updated my Microsoft patches. I’d heard so many horror stories from others who’d done the patches that it scared me. Undoubtedly, that left my PC open to all sorts of malicious little bugs. I’ll be sure to take care of the updates this evening. In the meantime, just let me know what else I need to do and I’ll get on it right away.

Again, a really BIG thanks!

Let us clean up your PC a little bit. Regarding SP2, if you try to install it on an infected PC, chances are that the PC would crash. The reason is that a lot of infections directly try and prevent the installation of SP2.

Delete the following programs and the associated folders, which you downloaded during the cleaning up process -

Vundofix.exe
Vundofix folder

Run Hijack This and click on scan. The following items need to be fixed -

Close all windows other than Hijack This. Check the boxes next to above items and click on Fix checked.

This will not delete the programs from your PC. This will only disable the programs from running at Start up and result in a faster PC. You can always run the programs manually by using the respective exe files or the shortcuts.

After this, please visit Windows security and critical updates and get all the updates and patches and install them on your PC.

Reboot the PC and post a fresh HJT log.

Please bear with me on this . . . just to clarify before I do anything:

- is the Vundofix.exe file the zip file I placed on my desktop?
- should I just click on the icons and delete?

And lastly, do I need to empty my Recycle Bin after that and should I also empty the my Notron Protected Files?

Hi Gopi,

CONGRATULATIONS !!!!!!!!!!! Your PC is clean now :tazz:

I would recommend the following steps to keep your PC clean (especially Step 8 now that your PC is clean) –

PREVENTIVE MEASURES FOR FUTURE

Operating System
1. Keep the Windows and Internet Explorer updated with the latest fixes. These fixes are available free from Microsoft. Click on Tools in the IE menu bar and then on Windows update. You can also use the following links

Windows security and critical updates
Internet Explorer security and critical updates

Also ensure that automatic updates are enabled for faster updation of the system.
(Right click on My Computer on your desktop, properties and Automatic Updates tab.

Anti-Virus Software
2. Keep your Anti-virus program updated with the latest definitions. Some of the common anti-virus programs in use are :

Norton Anti-Virus
McAfee Anti-Virus
AVG Anti-Virus --- freeware
Avast Home Edition --- freeware

Use only one anti-virus program as multiple such programs can create conflicts between themselves and severely hamper the performance of your PC.

Firewall
3. You should also have a good firewall. Here are 3 free ones available for personal use:
Sygate Personal Firewall, Kerio Personal Firewall, ZoneAlarm

Internet Browsers
4. Have robust explorer settings. It is preferable to use an internet browser other that IE as most of the malware is targetted at IE. In case you prefer to use IE, then download a list of innocent looking but harmful websites from IE-Spyad and install it on ur PC. IE-SPYAD puts over 5000 sites in your internet explorer's restricted zone, so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't really innocent at all.

Some alternate browsers I suggest are Firefox Mozilla Browser and Opera

Ensure that Security level, irrespective of whichever browser you use, is set at Medium or higher, restrict the usage of cookies and activeX components.

Spyware Protection
5. Have a wall of protection against spyware / adware by installing SpywareBlaster and SpywareGuard.

SpywareBlaster and SpywareGuard are by JavaCool and both are free programs.
SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed and consumes no system resources.
SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation and browser hijack attempts. Both have free ongoing updates.

Spyware Removers
6. Install programs for scanning for malware and uninstalling them. Two of the best programs, both are freeware, are :

Spybot Search & Destroy - A powerful tool which can search and annhilate nasties that make it onto your system. Now with an Immunize section that will help prevent future infections.

AdAware SE Personal Edition - Another very powerful tool which searches and kills nasties that infect your system. AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy compliment each other very well.

Regular Maintenance of PC
7. Finally, invest some time for regular maintenance of your PC. Delete the temporary Internet files, temporary files, cookies etc. Click on Start button, Programs, Accessories, System Tools and run the program Disk Cleanup. Follow the instructions.

An alternate freeware software which can be used is CleanUp.

Keep your Registry clean. My favourite software is Registry First Aid. This is not a freeware but a trial version can be downloaded.

System Restore Points
8. Since your PC is currently clean, create a system restore point. A system restore would enable you to revert to the settings on the PC when the restore point was created. It is also a good idea to flush all earlier system restore points which may be containing infected files.

A. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

B. Restart your computer.

C. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

System Restore will now be active again.

Go ahead and enjoy a clean PC !!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have printed and saved your instructions, and will take the appropriate steps to protect my PC from future invasion!

Your last set of instructions, i.e., "On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties. Click the System Restore tab. . ." were a little confusing.

The desktop My Computer icon is a shortcut and didn't have a System Restore tab. However, I clicked Start then did a right click on My Computer and was able to complete the rest of your directions.

Thank you very much for your incredible assistance!
