That error message usually signifies that the fix is being run from an account other than that of Administrator.

If that is the case, please log out of your current account and log back in as administrator and rerun the fix. It should work.

I'm about done too...

I downloaded process explorer from sysinternals. It told me that imgtask.dll was being used by explorer. So I killed explorer and ran vundofix from task manager

1. Directly from the developer of the VUNDO FIX,

The new version does not need to download strings.

Delete all vundo fix files folders and zip's and exe's then have the user go through the instructions again

2. So that means exactly what it says. DELETE all Vundo files, exes, zip,z folders on your machine because they are the old version or that is the one you are running.

3. Reboot your system.

4. Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order in which they are mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.

1. Download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.

• Double-click VundoFix.exe.
• After the files are extracted, please reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode then hit enter.
• Once in safe mode open the VundoFix folder and doubleclick on KillVundo.bat
• Please type the following file path (make sure to enter it exactly as below!):

• Press Enter, then press the F6 key, then press Enter one more time to continue with the fix.
• The fix will run then HijackThis will open.

• Pressing any key will cause a "Blue Screen of Death" this is normal, do not worry!
• Once your machine reboots please continue with the instructions below.

2. Download and install CleanUp!

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).

Set the program up as follows:

• Click "Options..."
• Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
• Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):
  • Empty Recycle Bins
  • Delete Cookies
  • Delete Prefetch files
  • Cleanup! All Users
• Click OK
• Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.

It may ask you to reboot at the end, click NO.

3. Then, please run this online virus scan: ActiveScan

4. Copy the results of the ActiveScan and paste them here along with a new HiJackThis log and the vundofix.txt file from the vundofix folder into this topic.

Unfortunately, the results are the same, with an alarming new twist. Now the explorer in safe mode won't stay up. I get the warning dialog but it closes (or more accurately I suppose, crashes) after a few seconds. On Saturday I was having the same problem but after a couple of tries explorer ran. This time around it won't launch and stay up. It works fine in normal mode.

I cleaned up all old versions of vundofix and associated files, downloaded it again, and ran through the sequence again (launcing from task manager\run) with the same results. It cannot delete imgtask.dll because the system thinks it is in use, although I can't find a process that has it loaded. Hijackthis doesn't remove it either.

I've already invested a huge amount of effort on this task (as have you which I very much appreciate) but something else needs to be done. I'm on the verge of reinstalling the OS. I'd appreciate advice on steps to take that are short of that. I'm running Windows CP Pro from Dell, and I do have the OS reinstallation CD that came with the machine.
