Very, Very SLOW Win XP PC [RESOLVED]

Hi:

Running a Gateway 2.6 GHz desktop with WinXP Pro. I have recently noticed that the startup takes forever to load the same programs; closing an IE browser window or program is no longer quick but now the window or browser closes top to bottom, like a slowly closing window shade, revealing the desktop beneath. It takes forever to open any program when clicking on a desktop icon. Opening IE or Outlook Express takes a very long time. Mouse movements are normal. I have run msconfig and looked at Task Manager for running processes: I used Castlecops Startup list and additionally GOOGLed all programs and saw nothing weird. I have run updated antivirus defs with Norton 2005 scans, and have run Ad-Aware SE 1.06, Spybot S & D, Spyware Blaster, WinPatrol, Microsoft Antispyware Beta, Ewido, Cleanup!, and ran an online Panda Software scan and also ran Housecall. The system is clean. Attached is a Hijackthis log. What is the chance that my OS is corrupt?

Hi amstuart,

Yes, your log looks totally clean. If you ask me, Norton would be a more likely candidate for a culprit than your OS. I would start with disabling or even uninstalling Norton to see if that helps. It is known for causing slowdowns and other problems on some systems.
Also, you are using 3 different monitoring programs and that is a bit much. I would turn off at least one of MSAS, Winpatrol or Teatimer and among those my vote would go for Teatimer first, but your choice.

Thank you for taking the time to review my case, Armodeluxe.

Well, reassuring that the PC is "clean". I will begin to eliminate one or two monitoring systems. I knew about not having 2 competing antivirus programs (more is not better) but I didn't know that continuing to run the suggested suite of anti-malware programs might cause problems. I guess the suite of programs loaded at once are appropriate for diagnosing an issue but all are not then needed for maintaining/protecting a system.
