Close HijackThis.

• Copy the instructions below and paste them into Notepad for reference.
  • All other windows need to be closed while doing this fix!
• Navigate to the new folder C:\VundoFix

  • When it starts running it will tell you that you need an active internet connection then ask you to press any key once you do.
• Please press any key to continue.
• Wait for HiJackThis to open.

Once the computer is rebooted:

Make sure all hidden files are showing:* Click Start.
* Open My Computer.
* Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
* Select the View Tab.
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
* Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm.
* Click OK.
Open Windows Explorer.
Move to this folder:
C:\WINDOWS\System
Remove all files named:
sarniw

Please post a new HiJackThis log as well as the contents of vundofix.txt which can be found in this folder: C:\VundoFix

Thank you so much for your help, g2i2r4.
I had some trouble with the instructions:

1) Winfixer 2005 didn't appear in the list from HijackThis
2) Mywaysearch didn't appear in the list either
3) After starting VundoFix.bat I didn't get the message you mentioned. I got a message to hit ENTER to accept the conditions and then a message asking me to enter the first filepath provided by support.
4) HijackThis didn't open by itself so i started it
5) I deleted the entries you listed (except for: O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [KernelFaultCheck] %systemroot%\system32\dumprep 0 -k, because it wasn't in the list)
6) I deleted all sarniw files but after a few seconds from deleting the file sarniw.ini it reappeared. If I just renamed it, it reappeared again.

I also see a winras.dll in c:\windows\system, should I delete it as well?

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).
Set the program up as follows:
Click "Options..."
Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):

• Empty Recycle Bins
• Delete Cookies
• Delete Prefetch files
• Cleanup! All Users

Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.

It may ask you to reboot at the end, click NO.

Then, please run this online virus scan: ActiveScan

Copy the results of the ActiveScan and paste them here along with a new HiJackThis log and the vundofix.txt file from the vundofix folder into this topic.

Ah! This went better, thank you (results below).

One thing that worried me was that before starting this process today (new today), with the first reboot, I got a blue screen with a fatal error (before running Vundofix) and the machine never shut down. it stayed there so I had to push and hold the power button to make it shut down. I know I should expect a blue screen after forcing the reboot and I did get the same screen when forcing the reboot but again it never rebooted.

Everything else went well. The first entry on HijackThis wasn't there but the second was. I also didn't get multiple messages from McAffee telling me it couldn't remove winras.dll after rebooting, which is really good!

All problems are gone! The reboot problem: GONE, the long time to close the browser window: GONE, the adware windows opening from nowhere: GONE, the long time to shut down, GONE!

Please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

• Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and re-enable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.
  
  You can find instructions on how to enable and re-enable system restore here:

  Re-enable system restore with the instructions from the tutorial above
  
  
• Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
  • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
  • Click once on the Security tab
  • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
  • Click once on the Custom Level button.
    
    • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
    • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
    • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
    • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
    • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
    • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
    • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
    • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
  • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
• Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

• Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
  
  
• Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

• Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer always has the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
  
  
• Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & Hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with this program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.

• Install Ad-Aware – Download and install Ad-Aware. You should also scan your computer with this program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.

• Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will add a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

• Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.
