hi!
i realy need alot of help... i cant do anything i cant see my desktop when in normal windows mode i have to run everything off taskmanager. any advice would be a help. thank for anything

We'll need to transport some files from the computer you are now using, to your infected computer.

Download smitRem.zip and save the file to your desktop.
Right click on the file and extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.
So you'll get a new folder called smitrem on your desktop.
I want you to put that folder on cd, floppy or usb-stick.

On your infected computer, boot again in safe mode and open your task manager again.
Now insert the cd, floppy or usb-stick where you saved the smitrem folder in your infected computer.

In your Task Manager, click 'applications' (first tab).
Click the New Task button.
Cick browse.

Now browse to the drive where your floppy, usb-stick or cd is present (could be A or D or E or F.. you'll see..)
Search for that smitrem folder.
Right click on the smitrem folder and choose: Copy

Now browse again via Task Manager to My Documents or Program Files.
Right click somewhere in there, right click and choose: Paste
Now open the smitrem folder you just copied and pasted and click the file: RunThis.bat
Then click open.
In the window where it says 'Create new task', click OK.

Normally, you'll have to drag the different windows you'll see to left or to right, because normally they will open on top of each other and you wont see the command window the tool starts that is under it.
You'll see a blue window now.
Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete.

When done, in Task Manager, click 'shut down' from the menu on top and click restart. Your computer will reboot now.
Reboot to normal mode and post a hijackthis log in your next reply.

thanks for the welcome
i already had smitrem and have run it manytimes but i did it again just in case... i am using the infected computer to do all of this.
when i get into safe mode i am able to see a desktop so i go into safe mode with networking to make it easy on me... but i run all the hjt and smitrem in normal mode. anyways i tryed the smitrem and it keeps telling me that a good copy of wininet.dll can not be found so it can not replace it even though i have downloaded a copy of it onto c:/ drive.

i belive i have found out why i have no desktop though. whenever i try to run windows explorer it says on a error window :


"Explorer.EXE-Application Error. The application failed to inisilize property (0xc0000005)"

thats what it says... and heres my HJT log^^

It sure looks like you are going to need that disc to restore some corrupted files. Check with the maker of your computer. In most cases they will send you a Windows disc if you request it.

In the meantime, let's try this:

On your keyboard hit the Windows button and R at the same time to bring the Run box.

Type in sfc /scannow and hit Enter.

This will scan your computer for missing or corrupted system files and try to replace them.

okay.. i already tryed the windows+r but that did not work so i just ran it off of task manager, i ran it twice because nothing happend after the first time it finished(is that supposed to happen?). and on the second time it did the samething. and about calling the computer maker(dell) for the disks. they are not open today so i will have to call them tomorrow and hope they will send the disks. i will post first thing affter i call them to see if they will send them

Yes, that's normal if it doesn't find anything.

Dell should send you a disc, but it will take a few days. Let's try something else while we're waiting on them.

Navigate to My Computer.
Right click on Local Disc(C:) and select Properties
Click on the Tools tab and under Error Checking click Check Now.

Reboot your computer to begin the process. Let me know how it goes.

okay here it gose, dell is going to send the os soon I hope, but that may take a while. and about the c drive fix thing well i ran it once and it finished and i dont think anything came up after it was done, but i was not there. should i run it again?

There's no need to run it again. It would have fixed any problems automatically.

Can you do a search on your computer for any other copies of wininet.dll
Let me know where you find them and what size they are.


Post a new hijackthis log. We'll work on cleaning that up while we wait on your disc to arrive.

Run Hijackthis again, click scan, and Put a checkmark next to each of these. Then close all other windows--you should only see HijackThis on your Desktop--and click the Fix Checked button.

Find this file and rename it to wininet.old

C:\WINDOWS\System32\wininet.dll



Next, copy the wininet.dll file from C:\i386 and paste into C:\Windows\System32





Reboot your computer and then run Smitrem once again. Post the log for me to see. Let me know if there's any difference.

weehee. i love being able to see my desktop it makes thing so much easyer!!!

i scaned with macfee and i showed up with wininet.old was infected with w32/alemod.e.dll but it said it was cleanable!! and it cleaned it. should i delete it or just leave it there or move it? hehe
